And kids, don’t be intimidated about buying a rice cooker. The kind he used only costs about $15 or $20 and it cooks rice WAY better than a pan, because it automatically stops cooking and goes into “warming” mode once it senses that all the water has gone - either been absorbed by the rice, or evaporated off as steam. You don’t have to worry about being left with soupy rice, or burned rice. Always perfectly fluffy!
@sdownin72

Also a fun trick to try - you don’t HAVE to use water when you be cook your rice. For added flavor you can use your favorite stock or broth. Also if you use water, it helps to salt the water like you do when you boil pastas. That gives the rice some nice “cooked in” seasoning. For another delicious variation, chop up a couple cloves of garlic and just toss them in to the pot with the rice and the water before cooking.

And to make a congee or asian porridge, the rice to water ratio would be 1:8 Well not exactly water, you need to use chicken stock instead. Add salt and pepper for taste, shredded chicken, spring onion. And voila you got a nice comfort food :)

My rice cooker fritzed out on me one afternoon, i went straight to the shops for a new one. I can't be without my rice cooker. Perfect rice everytime. Cheap pot and lasts for years. If you make fried rice, cook your rice the day before, lay it out on a baking tray in the fridge until the next day. Also, cook plain rice, put it in a freezer bag and put it in the freezer so you can just take some of it to add to a meal or put some in your dog's food. It's always handy to have cooked rice in the freezer.

@@chemania1 It's a bit different for me. Take rice in a pot. Wash it two times like he did in the video. Then fill the pot with water and keep it aside for 1 hour. You can do some other chores or whatever you wanna do by that time. After 1 hour of soaking water in rice, drain water out and fill fill up with fresh water, water level should be around 1 to 1.5 middle finger crease(from top) higer than rice level. Then put it on stove or induction at medium heat for 10 min till most of top water evaporates and just wet rice is left. Then cover it up with lid on same heat for another 10 min. Perfect rice ready... soaking it up reduces the cooking time. Saves energy/gas and makes it more healthy...

as an asian person, i can safely say that his method is totally viable and is a good start for beginners, mainly cuz his method of cooking is similar to my mine, but i do also have small nitpicks in his method that i dont prefer but thats just my preference, but is good for beginners ill give him that. oh and fun fact it is possible to cook rice without a rice cooker, though i wouldn't recommend it for beginners. love the content dad👍

You mean so damn much to me for things like this! (TW: talk of child emotional abuse) Things that seem "simple" or "common sense" to most people... are things like me, an autistic enby who grew up in an emotionally abusive and intellectually-neglectful household most of my life, genuinely just never learned. And so, so, SO often, people from bad households like me were never taught even small things like this. The way my childhood abusers kept me from moving out? They didn't teach me independence. They didn't teach me things I needed to know to take care of myself and live more independently. My abusers kept me wrapped around their fingers that way, making me scared to leave because I had no life skills. At age 19, I finally realized how horrible my situation was, and moved in with my dad, to a more supportive and somewhat healthier household. In my first few months after moving there, I learned more things about how to care for myself than I had EVER learned growing up. I was 19 when I learned how to do my own laundry for the first time. I was 19 when I learned how to properly wash dishes. I was 19 when I learned how to sweep and how to use a mop (similar to swifter wetjet) to mop. I was 19 when I finally began learning to cook for myself. I was around 21 when I finally was taught how to drive, and I had to pay half of the fee to have an instructor teach me. (Note: father is supportive, but just couldn't find the time between work. So it's not his fault.) I was like 21 when I finally learned to change my own oil and tires. I was like 21 when someone FINALLY showed me how to mop with a real mop. MY LIFE IS SO MUCH BETTER NOW, DON'T WORRY!!! BUT- My relatives only have so much time and knowledge to teach me things. There are so many things that my dad and his relatives don't really know how to do themselves off the top of their head. If I had known about your videos so much sooner, let me tell you, my first few years after escaping would have been so much easier! My god, I'm SO FUCKING HAPPY that someone like you exists for people like me. You're wonderful. I'm about to use your video on how to fix a running toilet. I'm currently watching this rice video out of curiosity in case you have any tips! I can't wait to check out your other videos! I am gonna look through your other vids, and learn so so so much. I also need to check out Mom, How Do I! I'm also eager to check out your other cooking videos! Despite my great love of cooking and baking now, there is always so much I can learn! Heck, I only learned how to "fold" things into batter this year (I'm 26). And there's so much stuff about household and car repair that I just don't know yet! I'm eager to see if you have anything about taxes and health insurance, or finding resources for sliding scale clinics. Also gonna check out your budgeting video! Goodness, so much to learn! I'm so grateful for your existance. To have someone take people like me seriously, and genuinely teach them. Without degrading us, without making us feel stupid for not knowing... Just caringly teaching us like a good parent actually would. I'm not religious, but I live in the US South, so I just can't resist saying.... Bless you.

Great video! I should really invest in a rice cooker. n.n; For those of you who don't have a rice cooker, here's how to cook rice on the stove top like my dad showed me: For every cup of rice you're going to cook, add three cups of water to your cooking pot but DO NOT WASH OR ADD YOUR RICE YET! Turn the burner on high and bring your water to a boil, add some seasonings to your water if you like. Said seasonings will be absorbed into the rice along with the water. I like to add a dash of soy sauce. Add your (unwashed) rice to the water and STIR IMMEDIATELY, bringing the heat down to medium. Stir it every couple of minutes to keep it from sticking. You wanna cook it for about 15 minutes like this and keep an eye on it as it has a tendency to boil over due to the starches we haven't washed off. Keeping a spoon lain across the top of the pot when you're not stirring usually solves this problem, though. While that's cooking, go to your sink and make sure your water is running hot and prepare either a colander with hole small enough that the rice can't slip through or a mesh strainer. Once the rice is done cooking, use the hot water and the strainer or colander to rinse it well. Add a little hot water to the bottom of your pot and set the strainer or colander in the top of it and place it back on the same burner, but with the heat turned off. Top with a pot lid. This will keep your rice warm and fluffy for a while in a sort of 'steamer'. Why did we wash the rice AFTER it was cooked? There are a lot of good nutrients in the starch of the rice that get absorbed in during cooking, so when we wash the rice after the fact, we basically wash away the excess with the good stuff already absorbed into the rice. You can't really get away with unwashed rice in a rice cooker as the rice will stick BADLY, hence why the stirring every couple of minutes in the stove top method.

The rice cooker is awesome for when you need to make rice and just "set it and forget it" when making rice for a larger meal, but you can ALSO make entire meals IN your rice cooker while your rice is cooking, especially if you get a cooker with a steamer basket, which makes for a VERY easy, low effort, low stress, easy clean up dinner for a one or two or even more (depending on the size of your rice cooker) There's loads of recipes out there for rice cooker meals and it can save you both time, money, and effort.

Hi! Nice and very helpful video for non-rice natives.😅 Just few tips from a Filipina who cook and eat rice almost every single day 🤣 1) Rub your rice a little bit more to wash off excess starch. Your pancreas will thank you. 2) In case the finger technique is weird or confusing for you, you can use any cup. Generally, you need equal amount of rice and water (e.g., 2cups of rice = 2cups of water). You may adjust next time you cook since there are rice varieties too. If it is mushy, lessen the water a bit. If it is still tough in the inside (sort of like pasta when not cooked enough), add water a bit. Enjoy cooking everyone 💖

Nice work. But you should make sure to dry the entire outside surface and bottom of the pot to prevent damaging the rice cooker's thermal relay. water can cause scorching or blackening of the pot walls and bottom heating plate, causing easy damage during use. If the pot is stuck with water, it is easily cause a fire and electric leakage. Anyway, the video is very meaningful

OMG... Just add 2 cups of water to one cup of rice and add some salt and little butter, vegan spread, or oil. Bring to a boil, then put a lid on the pot, remove from the heat and allow the rice to absorb the hot water. What's most important is the type of rice you use. Basmati is the 'prince of rice' so you can't really go wrong with that, unless you want a risotto or a bowl of sweet rice. Job done!
