Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

Dante's trilogy makes me think of man ever struggling but needing to struggle. The need to live through hardships to make your soul worthy of love. Virgil shows the way.

Fascinating mini-lecture. I never went to college, it just wasn't in the cards for me, which in retrospect may have been a blessing in disguise given the state of college over the last decade or two, but I love these lessons from Hillsdale, which add to my continuing independent education. Thank you.

Provided you have the money, I certainly recommend enrolling in a college for one of these types of classes. 😊 You don't need to do it for a degree, but just so you can have an enriching learning experience. I really am thankful for my time in university.

I just finished Hillsdale's two Constitution courses and I'm now deciding on either "The Rise and Fall of the Roman Republic" or "Dante's Divine Comedy". Do you recommend reading Dante's Divine Comedy before the course, during, or after? Thanks!

@@garym2879 if you are planning on starting right away, I would recommend starting with Dante. Mostly because it is a great course to prepare yourself for Easter. You don’t have to do the readings ahead of time. The course has a study guide with recommended readings. I think it’ll be helpful to listen to the lecture first and then do the reading, but others prefer to do it the other way around. It’s up to you.

Explaining the the Angel and the steps was very smart in creating the "spark" he intended. This poem is hard to read and understand. It was an excellent starting point if one wants to understand how Purgatory works and what You are supposed to get from it. Thank You

Listen to what he says around 3:44. The soul cannot do this without God’s grace. If you take the course you will learn that in the poem, the sun is a symbol of God’s grace and you cannot advance spiritually without it.

none of this teaching is Scripturally correct! Jesus accomplished everything on the cross, no need for a fake purgatory that doesn't exist! we should go to the Holy Bible for the absolute truth, not Dantes' imagination!
@calvincain5646

So, do you believe that Jesus wants you to go on sinning? Have you read Dante? He turned his back on God. The poem is about priorities and Dante places his priorities on other things he loves. His vision of Paradise is one where nobody is searching for their rewards in Heaven but accepting God's will. Perhaps you should take the course.

Despite Jesus accomplishing everything at the cross, we still have to purify our hearts through the process of sanctification, which cannot occur without God’s grace and our desire to participate with Him in the process. What Dante is describing here is precisely that process.

@@juanestebandavalos sanctification is a process that take place here while we’re on earth, alive. How can you be purified after dead? How can you show love to your neighbor after dead? This whole purgatory doctrine has no Bible foundation.
