TIP on getting drums off. studs are in the drum itself so leave wheel on take off 2 lug nuts snd leave the other 2 on but just barely. you can then pull on the wheel like a slide hammer to get drum off no problem. no hammering or anything. also I think I used 1 1/8 socket instead of 30mm no problem tapped it right on with light hammer blows. I haven't done any rear brakes in years and just did my daughter car. your video made me comfortable going in. good job and thankyou

Using the wheel as a slide hammer is a grat idea, although using a 4 pound hammer and steel block against the drum edge worked OK. I will try your great tip for the other brake. and I am doing daughter's car so second your thanks for the confidence this gave to attack the drum breaks. Used to have problems all the time with my 60's Minis. PS now I have inherited my dad's serious marine engine toolset 170 lb feet was easy...Nothing like a stepped down 1 inch stainless bar with 3/4 inch socket drive adapted down... resistance is futile, same as with the 2 foot Stilsons on stubborn steering links. Lesson is "don't struggle, just get a serious spanner/wrench!

Wouldn't that damage the threads of the studs or snap them in half? I snapped studs before just by tighting them too much by hand.

For all the dust I purchased a brake cleaner. Worked like a charm. Plus I have to admit without this video I would not have been able to do the job there's only one small tip that was left out. For the adjuster just make sure you tighten it to the max to be able to put the drum over everything with no issues.
@1AAuto
@1AAuto 11 жыл бұрын
The issue might be from the rust ring around the drum. Normally when the drums wear down, they don't wear down on the outer edge so they create a ring of metal that never gets used. The only suggestion would be to purchase new drums or try and shave down the existing ones. That will most likely require you to turn them on a lathe.

This really helped me with understanding the project thank you! For anyone have trouble getting the drum off I noticed on my 2007 focus there is a rubber plug on the backing plate (back side of brake). If you remove this you will see what should be the secondary brake shoe and drum wall. I used an old screwdriver and wiggled in between to loosen up the shoe. Then the drum came off rather easy. I'm not sure if this plug is on all models. This is my dads car has over quarter million miles on it and I think this is first time the rear brakes have been done so that drum was stuck! Thanks again 1A Auto.

A tip on removing the retaining clips from the pins when they are stuck. Turn the clips so the opening is facing the pad. Then with just any flat-headed screwdriver, stick the blade of the screwdriver between the clip and the metal on the back side of the pad and twist. Will come off easy every time. Great video too 👍👍

A couple of inputs: 1. It does not come with the ABS ring. You'll have to take the old ring off the old drum or put up with the ABS light. 2. For those having issues getting the old drum off. I had the same issue. It took a bit to get it off, but was easily done by using a couple of chisels and prying between the drum and the back plate on opposite sides. Just keep prying around the whole drum. Using two pry devices (chisels) on opposite sides was the key for me.

Excellent video. This saved my bacon getting my friend's '06 Focus wagon back on the road. Having worked on previous and older vehicles, I was at first stymied in getting the drum off. I had NO idea that the hub bearing nut had to be removed at first. I soaked the studs with penetrating oil an was gently tapping about the rim of the drum and the stud ends with a hammer after looking for an adjuster port (Which there was none) to try to back off the shoes from the lip on the drum - which is OLD SKOOL thinking, yeah? Luckily I was patient, gentle with the hammer and nothing was broken. Searching google landed me on this video and I was aghast at how simple it all was ONCE you remove the 30mm hub bearing retaining nut. I felt so retarded, but glad I was wrong and found your video solution. I completed the rear end on both sides in half an hour and they were perfect after seeing your video. Thank you!

Great video! Just remember to wet the whole brake assembly down after you have the drum off. The dust you see flying off as you are working is lethal to your lungs. Getting everything wet makes it harmless as long as it is wet. I know you were making a video but suggesting DIYers wear an asbestos exposure protecting dust mask is wise as well as gloves. Thank you for the video. I suggest your videos to friends who want to tackle their own repairs because they are well made and complete.

Thanks for this video as it was a life saver for me. The drum bearings and shoes were bad and needed replacing on my 2001 Focus LX. I had seen this video before I started but should have watched it again before replacing the shoes because I think I did something wrong. The smaller spring that goes to the self-adjusting bar I think I put it in the wrong hole. I put it in the hole were the longer spring that is under the caliper goes instead of the second hole under the brake adjusting bar.

Hi, Here's my 2 cents after just doing the job. -The factory rear drums on my 2001 had a dust seal on back side of the drum. -The adjuster may need to be cleaned a great deal and/or de-rusted. One on my car was seezed. -Might as well mention the adjuster should be set to the minimum with new shoes and drums otherwise the drum won't go. Cheers from Canada Tony

I have a question about the ABS sensing ring. So I just replaced both my drum brake shoes, as well as the cover (all prompted by a bad wheel bearing that had to go). Since I've put them back together, the ABS light came on first, followed by the brake light. The brakes work great without issue, however. I did a little bit of reading, and some people mentioned an ABS sensing ring in the old drum brake covers. Have you been able to get these off before?

Unfortunately, the 2005 Ford Focus has no access port for backing off the brake shoe adjuster. I'm thinking that perhaps the most expedient method might be to grind the head of the pins that retain the brake shoes in place. Except for the parking brake cable, that is about the only thing that prevents the shoes from coming out with the drum. Not sure that will work, but am getting desperate. lol
@1AAuto
@1AAuto 11 жыл бұрын
You may want to see if there's something blocking them from going on such as backing of on the brake shoes a little more, also check to see if there's something on the spindle that's preventing it from going on. Also make sure that you have the correct brake drums for your vehicle. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

I just did the rear brakes myself on my 2001 Ford Focus wagon that has 109,000 miles on it exactly as pictured. The brake shoes weren't that bad but the bearings were shot as they made lots of noise, so I also replaced the really rusty brake drums (rust was flaking off the outside of the brake drums in large chunks)with new ones that already had the bearings installed. My question is what does the little spring do that's attached to brake adjuster as it seems to be redundant (yes I installed those also). By the way the rear drums were an b***h to get off, but in the long run it was well worth it as now it is quiet now, and gives me something to do as I just retired late last year and it just so happens that I am quite gifted mechanically as my father taught me a lot about mechanics.

had a question. with getting new drums with new bearings or just having the current drums turned and reusing them, do you need to grease the bearings at all? asking because i will be doing this job soon on wifes car and want to make sure to do it right. the video did not explain the bearings.
@1AAuto
@1AAuto 7 жыл бұрын
Well, if the bearings need to be replaced, then you are better off simply replacing the whole bearing/drum assembly. If you decide to machine the drums then you assume the bearings are in decent shape so they wouldn't need any maintenance. To grease these bearings would mean pressing them out of the drum at which point you should really just replace them rather than press the old ones back in. If you check out our site, we offer the whole assembly (drums, bearings, and shoes on both sides) but under $125.00 and with free shipping. Just one small problem... the brake shoes normally wear away material on the drum, thus creating a ridge at the edge of the drum. That ridge will prevent the drum from slipping free of brake shoe and will prevent removal of the drum unless something is done to retract the shoe a bit. How is that done or how do you overcome that? In the demo, the shoe doesn't appear to be worn very much at all and so it is not hard to remove because the drum is probably not worn much either.

Thank you for the video. If you find that your ABS Lights come on along with the traction control lights and your car is acting slow and not responsive, you left off the Magnetic ABS rings. I just used a long crow bar and applied slow even pressure and it popped right off. When installing it on the new ones, make sure you use a rubber mallet and just tap the outside of the ring at 12, 6, 3, and 9 like on the clock. Otherwise you will damage the inside of the ring and cause uneven wear on the spindle.

When you compress the caliper piston make sure that it's flush and compressed all the way in. Then the new pads should fit over the new brake rotor. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

I've researched this. Apparently none of the aftermarket drums come with the ring. Even the FordParts website doesn't specify if their replacement drums have the ring. You have to either try to transfer the ring to the new drum, or buy a replacement and press it on. The rings are available online. Glad my Focus doesn't have ABS. From what I've been reading over the last year ABS is more trouble than it's worth.

One question. I've set the self adjusters on the rear just tight enough to allow me to put the drums back on, yet I have a spongy pedal and my parking brake never engages tight enough to hold the vehicle still. If I stab the brakes on a soft dirt or gravel as a test, only the front seem to engage. How do i go about getting the self adjusters to "adjust"? I've tried driving forward and back whilst jabbing the brakes to try and get the rear to adjust but nothing happens. And there is no external access to rear brake adjustment. What the heck am I doing wrong? Anyone? Thanks!

Can't get the brake drum to go back over the new brake shoes. Even after putting them in as tight as they will go. Any suggestions it is off by just a 1/8 to a 1/16th of an inch but just enought that the drum won't fit over the pads.

Didn't quite have the adjuster in as tight as it could go. However one wheel while having managed to get the drum on will not spin at all. Hope the drum isn't stuck on the pads. This project is just one of the many reasons Focus has to be one of the most frustrating cars for a DYI person.

I must be doing something wrong, my drums were never that easy to take on or off. It took me hours to get the passenger side off, and I had to torque it back on with the wheel nut. Now I am working on the driver's side, and the bearing was shot and the inner race is stuck to the axle.

I see a LOT of complaints about bearings for many of the new drums sold on Amazon. I would say the problem is they're not installing the axle nut correctly. They need to follow the steps 11:35 - 12:40.

You need to retract the auto adjuster with some pressure against the spring and rotating the cam/ratchet back as far as it will allow to contract the shoes. Once you bleed the drums and pump them back up a few times with the service brake, a few, slow 10MPH rolls forward and reverse to full stop will ratchet them back out to proper spec automatically. After few reversing, slow runs to full stop - pull up on the handbrake and check for proper parking brake function as well. If the car holds on parking brake alone in forward or reverse gears, no throttle, it's set.

Don't just clean the 6 areas on the plate, get a bucket and use brake clean and a brush to clean off the whole plate throughly. Use lubricant on the 6 areas. Triple check everything before putting on the new drums.

You make good videos, but this is the incorrect way to remove the drums on this platform. Unless you are replacing the drum/bearing do not mess with the securing nut in the middle. Simply pull the ENTIRE hub assembly as one unit attached to the drum by removing the 4 15mm nuts behind the backing plate. This is the Ford approved way an makes R&R a breeze.

Lynx Star, what you are saying is true but it doesn't really matter. When the state inspection comes around a Ford dealer might do it the "Ford" way, but every place else will just pull the axle nut. They do it the easiest way, not always the proper way. Firestone pulls the axle nuts on my car.
@adamsaquatics3332
@adamsaquatics3332 6 жыл бұрын
Pulling the axle nut is ok as long as you put it back on with the proper amount of torque and not get anything in there
@sdbw1990

Lynx Star Automotive do you the torque specification for those 4 nuts?
@brucear
@brucear 6 жыл бұрын
Yes it DOES matter. Every time you load/unload the bearing by removing that axle nut, you shorten the life of your bearing, even if you use the correct torque. I ALWAYS remove the four screws from the backing plate to work on the brakes. The factory rear wheel bearings lasted until 200k miles. Yes, the mechanic in this video changed the drum as well, but HE DID NOT SPECIFY that's what he was doing. So, the message was to do this EVERY time you work on the brakes. That is why the Ford engineers designed it this way.........to extend the life of the bearings. It is also why they went with the Duratec engine. It uses a timing CHAIN instead of a belt, so there is no maintenance required on that part. Or how about gas? Ford recommends 87 octane, put 87 in it, NOT premium. It will stop up the emissions system if you do. Change fuel filter every 20k miles. If not, you'll be replacing emissions systems parts prematurely. Ignorance gives car companies a bad name when customers don't service them properly. You've heard it before: they don't build cars as good as they used to. Yes they do. If fact, they're better. At 355k miles, I still have the factory catalytic converter and oxygen sensors.
