Enter Wallace Wallace from No More Dead Dogs. He is 100% *HONEST*, regardless if what he says is actually hurtful.

This will seem a bit out of topic but recently I’ve faced a different version of impostor syndrome in writing my characters. I’ve found a unique voice and colorful personality for my main characters but they are inspired/based by characters from separate fictional stories/video games, like Ace Attorney/Great Ace Attorney Chronicles for example, and every so often they start to resemble them a little too much and I get nervous I’m copycatting even though I’m not planning to. I have grown in confidence over my writing in the past few months but I’m wondering if I’m not alone in experiencing this conundrum or if it’s just me.

Two optiions I can think of: 1) Try to choose 3 important traits you want to keep, and reverse all the rest. 2) Pick the one trait that may change them upside down, and use it. Take a charscter full of motivation and take it from it or making someone shy instead of opem can create big gaps

You're definitely not alone in this. But I think it's very hard to copy another author's voice. If you're still in doubt, read the dialogue out loud and see if it actually sounds the same as these other characters. Also, try giving them unique phrases/mannerisms, and that should make them truly unique.

Say what happens if you forget the voice you give to a character?😅

If you've already written scenes with this character, you can always go back and reread them to remember what they sound like. Another way is to do a simple writing exercise where you write their stream of consciousness and see what words/phrases and quirks come out in their internal dialogue. And when both of these don't work because you've completely forgotten or haven't written in their voice yet, there's nothing wrong with starting from scratch with them and giving them a new voice that suits their character. I hope this helps! 🙂

@@NourZikrathanks 😊 I’ll give it a try. I want to be able to remember the voice I gave my cat when he spoke English

That seems to be the silly thing for me. It’s 90% of the time my tritagonists, side characters, or villains are more interesting than the MC. So really this video couldn’t come at a better time! Thanks! 💙 Curious question btw, but have you ever thought of doing, using, or tried a bible for your book? If not, what guide did you use to make your book? Appreciate the feedback. 🩵

Glad you found this video helpful! 🙂 I mainly just outline the basic plot points chapter by chapter so I can easily remember the most important details. I also write a one-page synopsis once the manuscript is complete so I can fully see the story arc.

When I read books or watch movies, it happens quite often that someone considered a side character by the author is the main character for me. Does this mean someone is doing something wrong? I don't think so. A story is only interesting if it builds an emotional connection to me. This isn't objective, it just happens. It can happen within a single paragraph or a few seconds of the movie, so side characters or even extras have equal chances to be the one that makes me read this book or watch this movie, rather than picking something else from the endless supply of works of fiction. Once I'm invested in the story, the main characters have plenty of time to get my attention too. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. And sometimes I may get disappointed when I expected a bigger role for "my" side character. I think, if I care for the fate of a character, there is much more suspense, especially earlier in the story, if that character isn't the main protagonist or antagonist. Unlike the main hero or villain, that kind of person may meet his or her fate at any moment, and before it happens, I don't have a clue what this fate may be.
