How to Upgrade a PS4 Controller Battery

If your PS4 controller doesn't charge or quickly drains, replace and upgrade the battery in about 10 minutes and for around $10. Gain even more playing time between charges by using a higher capacity battery in the process.
Note that there are 2 versions of the controller. The original version of the dual shock controller used a larger battery connector than the later version. Check the model of your controller and assure you are ordering a compatible battery. Some batteries come with dual connectors that will work with both versions of the controller.

This particular video isn't the type I normally do, but I needed to replace the batteries in my own controllers, so I thought I'd shoot a video as I did it with the hope that it might help out someone else that needed to do the same thing. You're welcome! My controller was much the same. Even with a full charge, I could only use if for less than an hour before a low battery warning was flashing up. With the new battery, I've been able to log some serious Sniper Elite 5 time (probably 6+ hours) with the battery still showing 2 out of 3 bars. It's really a pretty cheap and simple upgrade to restore the controller to better than new in terms of battery life. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment!

You just carefully switch the battery and that’s it ? Because whenever I play games my controller, always dies out quickly* it happened very recently last year is there a difference of the new battery lasting longer than the original one?

Yep.. that's pretty much it. After some time, rechargeable batteries wear out and will no longer hold a charge. That's exactly what happened to me. I couldn't get more than a few minutes out a "fully charged" controller before it died. But replacing the battery makes the controller "like new". After replacing the battery, I can now get hours of game play off of a single charge.... much like I did when the controller was new. And it is much cheaper to replace the battery than it is to buy a new controller!

@@alejandrocaudillo2993 just remember to not use a ridiculous sized battery and the charge controller should be same It should work with any li-ion battery as long as you know what u are doing But if u don’t,then just buy the batteries sold specifically for ds4 controller capacity doesn’t matter In this case as they are specifically made to be safely charged (not 100% but they make due)

I cant see my modelnumber because the whole placement for texts and code have worn off, is there another way to tell if its 1U or 2U?

From the battery perspective, the only difference is the size of the connector. The 1U connector is just slightly larger (4.5mm) than the 2U (3.5mm). So as long as the replacement battery has the right size connector, it should work. Alternatively, you can order a battery that has both size connectors so it will work with either version of the controller. You can find a link to a battery like this, with both connectors, in the video description.

I've got 2 PS4 controller where the sticker is gone with the barcode and controller-build-id. Is it still possible to find out what type of battery I need and how?

The only real difference as far as the battery is concerned, is the size of the connector. You could take the existing controller apart, note whether the current battery has the smaller or larger connector and simply order one of the batteries with the same size connector. Some batteries actually have two connectors... one of each size... that will work with either version of the controller.

Do you know what battery the Aim controller uses? I'm surprised no one's made a video about changing the Aim's battery. I can't even find a straight answer on Reddit. There's 2 videos about breaking one down, but surprisingly, no info on the battery.

Are you talking about the Playstation Move controller? I have replaced the batteries in the PS3 version of those as well, and I used these: amzn.to/4aSKUVJ Do note that this particular battery is meant for the PS3 Move controller. I think there may have been a different version sold with the PS4 (maybe?)... but those would require a different battery.

I have an 2e controller is it the same as 2u?

I am not 100% sure, but I believe that the "u" indicates US and "e" indicates EU. But I think both are gen 2 and would use the gen 2 connector. If you want to be 100% sure, you can take the current controller apart and check the battery connection. The size of the connector is really the only difference as far as the battery is concerned.... at least as far as I am aware with the US versions of the gen 1 and gen 2 controllers.

counterfeit Chinese batteries won't give you double the playtime, trust me. Usually they died a lot faster than the original

Unfortunately that happens over time. But with hundreds of links throughout all of my videos and blog articles, it is impractical for me to try to assure every link stays up to date. But it should be relatively easy to find a similar battery that matches the description and specs of the one that I link to. But I do appreciate you letting me know about the discontinued or unavailable item.

Not a problem, I was actually able to use the battery model number and was able to find some that were 2,500 mAh. I placed an order and should get them in a couple of days, those should last a good long time in between charges

@BenB810 I put the replacement batteries in both of my controllers 5 days ago. So far they are still fully charged. That's the best $17.00 I've spent in a while.

No clue how people believe that you can have a bigger battery with the same seize 😅 Just compared the ps5 battery with 1500mah vs the 1000 from the ps4 and they aren't any close...

Original got solid plastic protector case, without that case it is smaller than oem battery with no case. 2000mah around that size is legit.
