This video reviews the Hoyt Pro Defiant, the Carbon Defiant, Defiant Turbo, PowerMax, and Ignite. I tested the speed and noise of each bow at 70 pounds, 30" draw length with a 5 grain per pound arrow (350 grains) and 550 grain arrow to test speeds at both arrow weight. I also measured ATA length and brace height of each and logged all my data. At the end of the video I compare my findings with the manufacturer's listing data. Hey Sean, thank you for this review! I was debating between the Powermax and the Defiant. Compared to my Diamond Core, it was no contest. Well I didn't quite upgrade as much as i intended but did upgrade a little. I've set up my new bow for target use as hunting with any type of bow isn't legal in the UK where I live.
@seansoutdoors

Yeah, I remember that. I lived in London for a year, and it surprised me that it wasn't legal to hunt with a bow there. I was in Scotland for a weekend holiday and saw a read deer, which was pretty cool. I only saw fox when I was in England though. I never hunted or anything, those were just sightings while I was out hiking around.

I just bought a Defiant Carbon Turbo today. It's not brand new. It belong to a hunter that wanted a more powerful one, with a 80lbs option. So he just let this beauty at the archery shop, hoping someone will have it. I saw it and took it. I came to the shop with the intention of getting the PowerMax, but the Defiant is in an upper league. It's in perfect condition, and was used 2 months only (last year). I got it for 830USD (converted from 3500 RON, currency in Romania). It also includes a sight, arrow rest, peep, sling and a stabilizer. I love it. It was set at 70lbs, but had to bring it down to around 55, because i had a shoulder injury some years ago, and let's say my right shoulder now is a bit smaller now when compared to the left one, due to a long period of shoulder inactivity. Even so, I still have some trouble drawing the bow, but I know it's my fault (my shoulder problem, and maybe incorrect posture or drawing method, as I'm a total rookie in compound bow archery. Today it was my 1st day actually shooting a compound :) ), not the bow's. Anyway, I hope I'll recover my full strength in my shoulder, especially by hitting the gym more often :)) and be able to enjoy this beauty. I also consider ordering your book, if you are able to deliver in Europe, haven't checked that yet. Good review, btw. And thank you for all the beginner tips over your channel. M.

I would say it will depend on what weight you shoot it at, 70 or 80, but one of the best things to do is going onto a manufacturer's website and put in the exact specs you have and see all the options they give you and then you can pick the ones that best fit your budget with the recommendations they make. I typically just use Easton, but you could test out a few brands websites and put in the draw length and draw weight you are going to use. Hope that helps. God bless ya and thanks for watching.

You stated the Hoyt turbo had a better back wall then gave it a lower rating?? Just out of curiosity, what are your credentials?
@seansoutdoors
@seansoutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe you are confusing the two back wall ratings. One is on how solid the back wall is and the other is on how easy it comes off of the back wall. When a back wall is solid, the string doesn't move back farther on your anchor point if you pull back harder on the string. If the back wall is not solid then the string will move back farther on your anchor point if you pull back harder on the string (which is what these Hoyts do when set up with the cable stops). As far as coming OFF OF the back wall, that is a different rating. If a bow stays on the back wall, that means that when you ease up on the full draw so as to let the string down, it comes off of the back wall easy on these hoyts. Some bows, Like the PSE evolve are so difficult to get to come off of the back wall that you actually feel like you have to physically push forward to get it to let down. So I think you maybe are confusing the two ratings. I hope that helps clarify things for you. God bless you

I'd personally go with the Matthews as my preference between the two, but you are right, that is a really tough choice to make. If you want a rock solid back wall though, then go with the Hoyt and use the limb stops. That is the one weakness of the Matthews is a weak back wall. Good luck and God bless.

Question for the hoyt carbon defiant to adjust the weight do not let out or loosen more than 8 turns ,does that 8turns mean I should start at tightening the limb bolts to max, then loosening it say 7 turns and make my way up?
@seansoutdoors
@seansoutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, tighten it as far as it goes, then don't loosen it more turns than the manufacturer states. Only do two turns per side at a time. In other words, two turns on top bolt then two turns on bottom bolt then back to the top bolt for two turns then back to bottom, etc.

My personally opinion is that I like the Mathews Halon better. It was also the general consensus I heard from many of the people I talked to about bows the year these two came out. The Mathews seemed quieter, less hand shock, and just nicer. However, that was my opinion and the opinion of a lot of people I talked to, but you will also find your faithful Hoyt followers who will still prefer Hoyt. Best of luck.

just a question. are the pro defiant hitting their ibo rating. seemed off in your review by about 4-6 fps. I thought hoyts were supposed to be fast?
@seansoutdoors
@seansoutdoors 7 жыл бұрын
They were not hitting the IBO rating. Next year I am going to get a portable draw board with scale to make sure they are precisely on the right draw length and draw weight. Although the shop guaranteed that they were at those specs, it will be nice to verify to see if that has anything to do with why the bows are so much slower than advertised. But it could also be that the manufacturers are really tweaking the bows to get more speed to advertise but that isn't the normal..

If you don't like the back wall with the string stops the Defiant series does come with a limb stop. Not everyone prefers a rock hard back wall. I like the back wall on my CDT but may opt for the Bomar string stops just to firm it up a little more. But for now it shoots lights out and I love it.

I had a Halon 32 6" brace. Smooth, quiet, and pretty ok on speed. Got rid of it for a Hoyt Carbon Defiant Turbo. I like a bow that keeps you honest. If you do not have to pull against the backwall, you develop bad habits. Fact. I like a bow that wants to go as soon as you relax. Hands down the Carbon Defiant Turbo has it! And smoking fast. Is it as quiet as the Halon was? No. But I do not shoot past 50 yards, and my arrows get there with the Hoyt in a Jiffy. To each their own. Shoot and try them all, do not listen to youtube videos as guide. Do your own due diligence, and shoot straight. Good day!

Yeah you and I definitely have very different shooting styles. I like a bow that allows me to relax all my muscles while at full draw without risking coming forward off the back wall. sorry you are all over the place with your back wall comments and its confusing you say the turbo feels better but then say its a 4 or 5 out of 10 when you gave the others a 6 or 7 I do see you changed it all in the end so did you change your mind about the feel? or did you just put in the numbers that worked?.. also how do you do your sound test if you are not testing in the same room? how did you calculate for the room size and objects in the room? things like posters carpet wood make a massive differences to sound levels.
@seansoutdoors
@seansoutdoors 7 жыл бұрын
The bow feel when it is shot is what I was referring to when I said it feels better. It was not in reference to the back wall. The back wall was sloppy on all the hoyts. As for the sound, the meter is 3 feet from the bow and it records the loudest sound. The target is 20 yards away. I also have sound meters in the editing software and the spikes in the sound meters is higher when the bow goes off than when the arrow hits the target. I also tested the sound meter extensively and it the sound of the bow logged the highest sound BEFORE any echo coming back to the meter from any bouncing off of walls in the room. Goodness gracious man, I am sorry that Hoyt didn't do better in the testing, it isn't my fault. They just didn't compare to a lot of the other bows I shot based on data and feel. They have way more hand shock than any other bow, I wish the vibration meter worked so people could see that and they just didn't measure up in the testing, which isn't my fault. Even still, many people shoot them and like them and that is great. I am not telling people to not buy hoyt, I am just sharing the data that was achieved in the testing. God bless you.
@geekyarn
@geekyarn 7 жыл бұрын
OK just asking the question don't take offence. my advice is that you will see a change in level if you shoot it in different rooms and mate the Hoyt 34 did amazing its 2nd in your test right? I'm just letting you know your tests will have a margin of error due to environment. I have seen this even when testing at very low DB's same product different place up to 15% variation in DB levels. you are doing a good thing keep up the good work and i hope you can take advice and get better over time.

So Sean, I'm curious.... Love watching your vids BTW. But this video seems to not be reflecting the true capabilities of the hoyt's vs other bows. Looking at you sampling the Pro Defiant 34, if it's set to 70lbs as you say, you're using an 80lb bow turned way down. You can tell cause the limbs are backed way out of the pockets. And depending on the draw length, you would complain about the back wall on any of these bows in their A, B, or C positions. In the D or E position your back wall & valley will increase substantially. Along with that, so will your speeds as you're getting the full rotation on the cams. Just wanting to throw that out there for everyone watching. You posted up a 311 FPS rating which isn't a true representation of the bows capabilities, which someone was asking about false Hoyt IBO ratings in the comments. Hopefully people watching this don't take Hoyt's as a "5 out of 10 rating" compared to others you've reviewed, and try them out for themselves in order to make a determination. Keep up the good work!
@seansoutdoors
@seansoutdoors 7 жыл бұрын
All of these bows were shot at 70 pounds and 30 inch draw, so I did give Hoyt a fair representation as far as speed and noise. As far as the 311 fps, it is true that 311 isn't near where the advertised speed was at, but that is what the bow performed at 30 inch draw and 70 pounds. However, that is also why I keep saying in all of these videos that next year I would like to get a portable draw board to bring along to try to double check what these pro shops are setting the bows up at and if something is off a little bit. God bless
@JamesSClapperton
@JamesSClapperton 5 жыл бұрын
Sean's Outdoor Adventures I think what +Jason Barber is getting at is that if you were to consider the set limbs of the bow as a spring, a 60-70lb bow set at 70lbs would shoot faster than a 70-80lb bow dialed back to 70lbs because the limbs/cams aren’t fully “sprung” for lack of a better word. The cam wouldn’t be going through 100% of its rotation and thereby not performing to its true potential. I’m now expert on bows, quite a noob actually but I am familiar with spring tensions and vaguely familiar with cams in other applications, so what he says definitely has some merit. Great video regardless. Cheers.
@seansoutdoors
@seansoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
@@JamesSClapperton It wasn't an 80 pound limb bow turned down to a 70 pound draw weight. It was a 70 pound limb and the shop said the bow was set at 70 pounds. However, these types of questions are why I purchased a draw broad with a scale to check every single bow the next year.

@seansoutdoors
@seansoutdoors 7 жыл бұрын
I give a rating for how solid the back wall is, and how easy it is to let down off of the back wall. To test how solid it is, I pull against the draw stop wall to see if it moves. The more it moves the lower the rating is for how solid the back wall is. I then begin to ease up on my muscles to see how easily the bow string comes forward. If it comes off of the back wall it gets a lower rating. If I have to relax my muscles even more to just get it to come off of the back wall then it gets a higher rating (because this means you are less likely to creep forward while aiming the bow and thus helping you be more accurate more of the time with most shooting styles). The Hoyt came off of the back wall easier than any other bow I tested this year, so they got the lowest rating. The Reign stayed on the back wall much better, and I really had to relax my muscles very far in order for the string to come off of the back wall and come forward. I hope that makes sense. That is my best effort in trying to explain it. God bless you.

sean , how fast would the pro defiant 34 shoot with a 250 grain arrow?
@seansoutdoors
@seansoutdoors 7 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing that means you are planning to shoot at 50 pounds. I have not tested it, but the results would most likely be similar to a 350 grain arrow at 70 pounds and also this assumes you are also talking about shooting it at 30 inch draw. If you are shooting less than 30 inch draw, I would subtract about 8 to 10 feet per second for every inch shorter than 30 you go. So in this video, I think the Pro Defiant 34 was a round 311 feet per second. So shooting it at 50 pounds and 250 grain, it would still be in that area for a 30 inch draw. If you are shooting it at 29 inches, then it would be closer to 300, and that is just a rough guess based on how that particular model bow performed in this video. Hope that gives you a rough estimate. God bless you.

That really comes down to personal preference. Some people like a shorter bow because they feel like it is lighter and easier to move around, but other people like a longer bow because they typically are a little more stable when shooting. I personally like a longer bow myself, but I am also almost a foot taller than you. Maybe try shooting both and seeing if you like one over the other. Good luck with it and God bless you.

It was to much of a strain on the pro shop to ask them to stop dealing with their customers just to put draw stop pegs on all the bows. I mentioned all of that in my video though that they were available and would give the bow a solid wall rating. You have to realize that these pro shops are doing me a favor by letting me shoot the bows at their establishments but they don't have time to drop everything and do all kinds of extra tweaks and tuning for me.

Yeah, they were short for me, but IBO rating is based off of 30 inch draw and 70 pounds which is why I shot them all that way.

Why so much emphasis on the back wall and let down? Why not include ratings and comments for draw cycle, hand shock, noise after the shot? You give numbers for noise and vibration but I don’t think those numbers mean anything to the average person, maybe I’m just speaking for myself on that one. I feel there is A LOT more information to give on any bow you test. I appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos, but just a quick second here or there speaking on other qualities of the bow could go a long way too.

I'm not sure who is actually manufacturing their bows in USA anymore. Some places are outsourcing some aspects of the process, such as manufacturing, and then assembling the parts in america and then saying it is made in america, when in actuality it is only assembled in the USA but is fabricated in China, lol. I'd say that when you pick a brand, give them a call and ask them where their parts are manufactured. Then go from there.

I think you’re confused on my question. Not in terms of build quality of the bows, I mean terms of your impressions of the bow. You put a lot of emphasis on back wall and FPS but not a while else. I was wondering why? Are those the qualities you’re most concerned about or do you try to keep your videos short? Just my curiosity. No criticism here.

@@markfulcher5532 Mark, I think I just don't understand you. I put into my videos what I think can be compared between one bow to the next with the equipment I have to work with. Please don't take offense, but based on the fact that this particular video has had over 30,000 views, and the conclusion video in these series have reached over 155,000 views, and no one has ever brought up such a comment, but rather, most people thank me for how thorough my reviews are, I will have to say that I just don't understand what you are asking for. I recommend to you that you go out and start making videos that encompass what it is you are looking for in bow reviews and then provide them to the public. Best of luck with it and God bless you.

Lol “if you don’t like what you see, make your own videos and put them up....” Sean I like your videos, I see them as being very informative and I appreciate the time you put into them. And I like comparing the information from your videos to other Archery based KZfaq channels and seeing the similarities in bows and other equipment. I’m not tagging your videos. I feel like my question was simple but has turned into something that I never meant to. You give score ratings on back wall and ease of coming off the back wall. But you don’t score draw cycle, accuracy, hand shock, noise, fit and finish, grip comfort etc etc etc. and I was just wondering if backwall is that big of a quality for you that that’s the only score on a 10 scale that matters. That’s all. I hope that clears this up and if not, I’ll quit commenting and keep my curiosity to myself. Keep up the good and hard work. Big fan.

@@markfulcher5532 As for noise, I let the bow choose its own rating with the decibel meter. As for the rest, you have to stop and realize that it takes me so much time as it is to make one bow review. And, To give a number rating to a draw cycle simple doesn't work because it is so subjective. Some people like a deep valley in the back some don't, so how could I give a number for a draw cycle. What are we comparing? How quick it goes to peak weight, if it has a deep valley? There are just too many different preferences to be able to give a helpful rating for that. As for the hand shock, I tried to objectively quantify hand shock using a vibration meter in the 2018 reviews, but found that its accuracy wasn't sufficient to provide reliable readings. So, where it was possible I would say I tried to quantify what I could in a way that utilized objective data rather than subjective impressions. Honestly, I'm thinking of quitting the bow reviews because they are so much time and effort and I don't get paid anything to do them and can't justify the time anymore. We will see what happens come 2019.

I am trying to determine what bow to buy. I have learned this from your videos. I am not paying over $1,000 for a bow itself. I am not buying something just for the name. I want to be happy with this hobby not pressured by brand loyal drones. Keeping up with the jones has came to hunting smh. To all you but hurt Hoytigans buy something for the function not the advertising and unnecessary designs . Watch cam if you want to feel good and mystified for Hoyt then post your Hoyt bow on instagram if you want likes. Thank You Sean for what you do.

You are welcome. If you are looking to get a bow, my top preferences currently are Xpedition, Elite, BowTech, and Matthews. After shooting Xpedition, I just can't enjoy a Hoyt, and that is just me being honest.

My issue is that I discovered that I am left eye dominant and my left arm is not that strong to constantly practice to get good at shooting. I am looking for something that is smooth to draw but does not sacrifice much performance. I will probably make the drive to Lancaster to try out the PSE evolve 35, expedition Denali, Realm X. Logic being that the longer ATA bows may help my issue. Any recommendations there as far as long ATA bows?

I personally like a longer ATA myself, but everyone has their own preference. I'd say try them out and see what feels at home to you.
