First, a shout out to Thoriated Flash whose video gave me a first look inside the card and advised using 1mm thermal pads instead of 1.5mm pads as recommended in videos for the 3090 FE and other cards. Please see his video for more disassembly details, he also has some great advice in his comments.
This video shows the process I used to upgrade my HP OEM 3090 card to eliminate the thermal throttling issue the card was having.
While a little scary, because it’s such an expensive card and they’re so damn hard to get, if you’re familiar with electronics and you take your time, the entire process is quite simple.
If you’re a complete newb, you can still do this... but be warned, you can also severely damage your card. Proceed at your own risk. Make sure you have an anti-static work surface, and anti-static grounding strap and touch the chips and card components as little as possible. Even the tiniest of electrostatic discharges can damage electronics and you may not even feel it (I know from experience).
To complete this project, I used;
Two (2) Thermalright 1mm thermal pads www.amazon.com/dp/B08CGL7MLN?...
One (1) tube of Thermalright TF8 Thermal Compound Paste www.amazon.com/dp/B07K442WXV?...
Tools - I ordered the kit below which was a bit overkill, all I really used out of it was the PH0 screw driver, the exacto knife, the anti-static grounding strap and the spatula like tools to gently remove the old thermal paste on the card. www.amazon.com/dp/B07FZW4K5D/...
Miscellaneous - Isopropyl alcohol, Q-tips and an anti static cloth to clean off the old thermal compound.
Proceed carefully, ask questions and watch as many videos as you can find for advice.
Good luck!

I just did the thermal pads replacement + added some thermal paste, and got -10° on VRAM temperatures! I plan also to try adding the heat sink on the top of the backplate, and see if I can decrease temperature even more. Make sure you are using 1mm pads, I tried first with 1.5 and it was too thick Thanks for the video

The very key to this project is that extra paste you put in between the black metal shroud and the main heatsink. Skip that and you might get some minor improvement but the real issue is that the shroud over the rams is not making proper contact with the main heat sink. Pads are too thick to put there, so paste is needed. Be generous, and figure out where the shroud and heat sink actually meet for best contact and thermal transfer. You know you've done it right if you get massive decrease in memory temps and increased heat in your core. The mems heat up the main heat sink and increase core thermals a bit but it's just fine anyway.

Your exactly right that is what i was seeing and thought somethings wrong was going to tear it back apart and apply more thermal paste to gpu . Thank You for the heads up.. FYI I went from 52c Core 100c vram to 60c Core and 86c vram with a small fan blowing into case also added the heat sink with thermal pads going to try a blower style fan blowing across GPU to back case exhaust fan.

@@bobwire6440 I'm just running without side panel. The airflow of the case is so bad no matter what you do. It's a shame, with a little thought put into it it would be a very very pretty little case. As is, it's just impossible to make it have enough airflowe to high tier CPU and GPU

Lay a 120mm fan on the backplate blowing down, it'll drop junction temp a few more degrees. Ideally a high static pressure fan but any fan will do

just got this computer too....runs super hot (102-106 with case open).... def will be replacing pads and see what happens, but so far I took it apart to confirm 1mm pad size, and decided to add a little Artic Silver I had laying around, to the GPU and to the radiator plate like you did. My temps have dropped 6-8c from this ALONE!!! wow. I've also seen some vids on adding heatsinks to the back plate. I'll be doing that too. I'll update the results.

Added two 100x40x20mm heatsinks to the backplate, no thermal tape or anything.... just layed on it. Got another 2c drop. Will add thermal pads when they come in, and thermal tape to the heatsinks. And probably a fan pulling air off the heatsinks. I will report back.

That seems crazy! I’ve been considering adding a heat sink to the back of my card as well. I took a processor heat sink w/fan from an old computer and I just need a cable splitter for the fan. It may be a week or two before I get around to playing with this... work, work, work and no time for fun projects.

I put two fans on top of the back plate for pulling, one on side to pull, one below the card for inhaust, one on top of the case for exhaust with the card’s fan running at 85% and it reports 96-98c on room temperature of 52f. I guess you can try to put at least one fan on the back plate(close to the rear where it’s hot) for pulling and the temperature may drop by a significant level.

Glad I found this vid, I found the other vids for aftermarket cards, but this one is exactly what I need! So I made the changes and put everything back together (used 1.5mm pads) and now my GPU temps are too high, with OEM pads I was at 46.8/49.1/48.3 degrees (Min/Max/Avg), then after the mod I was at 71/71.8/71.5 degrees. I noticed the back plate is a little elevated and it doesnt sit all the way like it used to, anyone else run into this??

Thank you for the video. After thermal pad upgrade my memory temp went from 110 to 95C, but my GPU went from 65 to 85-87. Could it be due to additional thermal paste that I applied on copper plate (as on your video at 3:48)? Is it possible that this extra heat is coming from memory to GPU?

Thanks for the guide.. My gpu was 67c, 108-110c junction. Did a thermal pad upgrade, it definitely helped vram, 98c, but my gpu is 80c. I had to mess with my thermal paste a couple of times as it was throttling clock speeds. Is it possible the heat dissipated from vram to heatsink is causing gpu stay hot? Is mining at 80c fine? I only get 105mh too..

I read this from an amazon user - Scenario 2 : Same as first, except when you test your gpu you get good Memory Junction Temps, but your GPU and Hotspot Temps are elevated. This problem occurs when there is an even distribution of pressure on the thermal pads, as the Memory Junction Temps are low, but the Heat Sink is not making proper contact with the gpu, causing the GPU Temps to rise. The solution to this problem is almost the same as above, with a few exceptions. First, check the backplate screws. Again, this solution may be just this simple, and yes, this happened to me twice on the 3080's. The first time i tore the card down, and put it back together and it worked fine. During the tear down, i noticed that two of the spring screws(M2x7mm) were fairly loose. When I put it back together, I didn't make anymore thermal pad changes, just double checked that the backplate screws were tightened properly. On the first test, GPU Temps were at 46 C, and Mem Junc Temps at 76 C... Perfect. On the second 3080, I was getting the same problem, and before tearing it down i double checked the screws, and sure enough one was loose. Tightened the screw and temps dropped immediately. Now, if you check the backplate/heatsink screws, and they are all tight, then you may have a second problem. This problem will be that all of the pads on either the back side of the card, or the front side of the card, or both, are too thick. If the memory temps are all low, but the gpu temps are high, then the thickness of the new thermal pads may be too thick, and the heatsink is not making contact with the gpu. This scenario is different from the first one, because in this scenario the new thermal pads are making even contact with the memory. For that reason, you would need to change all the thermal pads so that you can continue to get that even distribution of pressure on the thermal pads. Just as a tip, if your gpu temps are extremely high, then take off a mm from the thermal pad thickness, if the temps or only slightly elevated, then replace the thermal pads with a thermal pad that's only 0.5mm less thick. For example, if you have 2mm pads, and the temps are extremely high, then replace the 2mm pads with 1mm pads. If its only moderate, then replace the 2mm pads with 1.5mm pads. This is also making the assumption that you applied the thermal paste on the gpu die properly. This, too, can be the problem.

Excellent video man, I just put my 3090 omen card together this morning to test. I am using TRex miner & my Memory temperature is stable at 86C @ 119MH with your OC settings. My only concern with your process is the chips you added thermal pads to is not allowing for good contact from the copper plating to the black plate. The difference in our temperature may also be the mining software. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks! That was my first ever video. I’m still wondering myself about those two chips I added pads to last minute. I’m thinking in a week or two, I may take it apart again and remove them and see what happens. @@tonysanchez3290 Trex is optimized for 30 series gpu's. You could download Trex and try it for free even without making a wallet, say with coinbase. It is simple to run. @@blakeracerr899 Well, I couldn’t leave well enough alone... I took apart the card again to check coverage on those two chips I added pads to. The pads were making good contact with the frame, so no trouble there. I replaced the pads and thermal paste again (without covering those 2 chips) and now the damn card is running a couple degrees hotter. I also noticed that all the chips made a nice indent on the new pads, except for the long strip in the middle of the black frame, there was barely any impression on the pads. I’ll be taking it apart again to cover those two chips again and if there is little/no impression on that long strip again, I’m going to try a 1.5mm pad there. Stay tuned!

These HP Omens are not really made for 3090. Very poor cooling system in the case, i9 and 3090 want 850W, not 750W. And HP motherboards are very basic. I couldn't play GTA V on ultra (3440x1440) without getting 110C on memory with my Omen. I wouldn't recommend high-end Omens.
