In this episode of Repair and Replace, Nick shows how to replace the solenoid valve in a GeneralAire GF-1042 humidifier. If the solenoid valve fails then it can prevent the humidifier from working. This will result in a dry humidifier pad. Alternatively if the solenoid is stuck open then the humidifier will keep running.

Soooo, the wires you twist together - black on the valve. Does it make any difference how these hook to the other wires? My control has a red and white wire, yours has all black.
@AmreSupply

Thanks for watching. That is a good question. The solenoid valve is just a coil of wires that creates a magnetic field so it is not affected by the polarity of the wires. The red and white wire in your case can go to either one.

Hi, I am having the same issue as a few others. Water is dripping instead of a slow steady stream going into the humidifier. Going to replace the orifice, but wanted to double check about the solenoid valve. I do hear it clicking when I turn it on, but no clicking when it shuts off. Thank You
@AmreSupply

Thanks for watching. The water shouldn't be a high pressure stream and should be trickling onto the pad. The pad should feel moist though. The fact that you hear the solenoid click means that its getting power. The solenoid will magnetically open when electricity charges the coil, and when the power shuts off the solenoid will be pushed closed by a spring. When the solenoid fails its generally stuck closed and will not open at all. In your case you're right that its best to replace the orifice first.

@@AmreSupply Thank you Nick, I ended up replacing the solenoid with Genaire assembly. That did the trick. First I checked the water supply line and there was plenty of water flow, so all that was left was the orifice/strainer assembly. I looked at the strainer and it was clean, so I went ahead and just did the whole thing. Just a note to others, when you buy the solenoid it comes with a new orifice and strainer, all you need to do is re-connect the supply water line & filler tube on top, hook up the wires and hope there are no leaks lol. Actually a very easy project & you save yourself $100 or so. New assembly is around $50. Thanks again Nick...

Hi Amire Supply, how would you determine whether the solenoid needs to be replaced?Thanks
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 7 жыл бұрын
Hi edvc520, As stated in our video at the 1:00 minute mark, when the solenoid fails, it will no longer add moisture to the air. It other words, if you've determined the humidstat is working and telling the solenoid to open and let water into the humidifier, but water isn't making it into the humidifier, a good bet is the solenoid. Because it is electrical it is possible that the solenoid has failed. Before replacing, make sure that the water line is on and not kinked as well. Thanks for asking! - Rachael

Thanks for the video. My solenoid valve started making a buzzing noise when it is powered and letting water through. It seems to be functioning normally in terms of water flow, but it, along with the copper water pipe it is attached to vibrate loudly. Any ideas on how to remedy this issue ?
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. If the sound from the solenoid is more of an electrical buzzing, then that could be caused by a bad wire connection or improper voltage. What you're describing is more vibration sounds through the solenoid and pipe. You are likely hearing water hammer, which is the force of the water abruptly stopping, causing small shock waves to shake or vibrate the pipe. This is common on a rigid pipe like copper. Switching to plastic would reduce water hammer as there is more give. As well you could try tightening any support brackets around the copper pipe.

Thank you for commenting. If there is a calcium buildup on the distributor trough, then water will build up and overflow before it drips onto the pad. It would be best to inspect and clean the distributor trough, (a vinegar or acid base cleaner will help remove the calcium). Also double check to see if the tray is cracked or is leaking directly. You can remove it and fill it with water to see how well it holds up. Sorry for not seeing this comment earlier, hopefully this helps anyone else with a similar problem.

My humidifier is making a clicking on noise and then 2 seconds later another click. My humidifier was set on Medium and i turned it to low and it stopped. It is however 12* here in Iowa so I feel the humidifier should stay on medium setting. We bought our house a year ago - should I start with the filter? Or would the clicking be the solenoid?
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Carissa and Larry, thank you for watching. The solenoid will make a clicking noise that is perfectly normal. When the coils inside the solenoid energize, it moves a small plunger opening the water valve for several seconds before it closes. The pad inside of these humidifiers need to be moist but there doesn't need to be a constant flow of water all the time. That's why the solenoid only opens once in a while as needed. As long as the pad is moist and your home has the right humidity then there isn't any need to replace the solenoid. Now if the filter has a buildup of minerals and calcium then it will reduce how much moisture it can add to the air, so if there is a calcium buildup then you'll want to replace the filter. Hope this helps!

Hi AMRE Supply. I'm about to order a replacement solenoid - but I haven't found the answer to my question in previous comments so here goes: My question is: can a solenoid be giving the clicking sound and still be stuck/jammed? When my furnace is running (the blower motor and the flames are on) I can hear the solenoid click. I can turn the dial on the humidistat back and forth to get it to click each time it passes the set humidity threshold. However - despite this clicking sound - no water is making it through the pad. I've examined the plumbing leading up to the solenoid (even replaced two valves to be sure) - and water is flowing. I'll be getting my replacement part from one of your local branches - I appreciate your help.

@AmreSupply 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, and we appreciate your support! The the solenoid clicks then that's an indicator that the pin is moving. It is possible that the solenoid is working but there is a blockage somewhere in the system. It could be a buildup of minerals if you have hard water. You could turn off the water and disconnect the system to try to narrow down and isolate where the blockage is. It could be before or after the solenoid. As well you can inspect the solenoid itself.

I have a different model humidifier, but even with my humidistat set to off/0%, I still hear some water dripping out of the PVC drain pipe coming from the humidifier. I'm guess that that means that the solenoid valve isn't sealing things off completely when its off and in the closed position. I assume there are some internal gaskets that might have hardened over time causing the small leak. Does that sound right? If so, can I just disassemble the solenoid valve and "rebuild" it by replacing gaskets. Do they sell a gasket repair kit or something? Or am I stuck buying a whole new solenoid valve? For reference, it looks like the model number on my solenoid valve is 32001876-001. Thanks!

@AmreSupply 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, thank you for watching! You've made some good observations and if you don't think that the solenoid is closing properly then it will likely need to be replaced. As for repair, it is not common to open these up and repair them and you'll likely not find any good reference for what exactly is inside of that particular solenoid until you open it up. There seems to be a nut at the end of the solenoid, you could try opening it up. I'm not aware of any specific repair kits but you could find some general purpose gasket kits with various sizes. There are no guarantees but in some cases, people find it worthwhile to explore these sorts of options.

Hi Rod, thank you for watching. Since the solenoid valve either opens or closes there's no way of changing that. You can however adjust the shutoff valve to the humidifier. Thanks for watching. Saddle valves (like the one shown in the video) are used since they can be placed on any existing line but are prone to leaking. They simply just have a small needle that pierces the line and diverts water. For a leak proof, and more permanent solution you'll want to install a Tee and attach a ball valve. This would involve shutting off the water line, cutting the pipe and installing the Tee. As well if the water isn't draining onto the humidifier pad then there could be a blockage or the saddle valve might be closed too tightly (in the position that doesn't leak).

@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, we're glad that you found the video helpful. It depends on how the humidistat is wired. Generally the humidistat is wired to the furnace, so when the blower fan runs, the humidifier will dispense water. You can test this by shutting off the power to the furnace (the switch beside it or at the breaker) if there's still water running then either the solenoid valve is stuck open or the humidistat is not wired properly. There are two ways of narrowing this down. You could remove the solenoid and check to see if it is opened (when not powered it should be closed) More info on solenoids here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/faiqZt2VmK60Z4E.html Considering that its a new solenoid, its more likely that the humidistat is wired improperly. The humidistat will send 24V to the solenoid which can be tested with a multimeter. If there is 24v being sent to the solenoid even when the furnace is shut off, then the humidistat is not wired properly to the furnace.

To figure this out, you'll need to look at your humidistat and reference the installation manual. It will tell you which terminals on the furnace the humidistat wires should be connected to. After the solenoid receives 24 volts you should hear a click as it energizes. Humidifiers are wired to the humidistat. When there is a call for humidity it will signal for the humidifier to run. There can be several ways that humidistats are wired to furnaces so its best to look at your humidistat manual to see how it is wired.

Hi, I'd like to know how to test whether a solenoid valve has failed. My humidifier fan would turn on when the furnace is running, but no water seems to enter the humidifier. I checked water supply valve (the one you have at 1:14 and turned it counterclockwise until it drips water) but still no water enters the system. May I confirm that the solenoid valve has failed? The previous house owner claimed that they had never used the humidifier, and they lived in the house for over 15 years. The humidifier was made in 1999. Also I'm not sure if it's normal for the water supply valve to drip water when I turn it open (counterclockwise) to a certain level.
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 5 жыл бұрын
Hi leon. The humidifier solenoid valve uses 24 volts to charge a magnetic coil which opens the valve. You should hear the valve click when it opens. The fact that you opened the water supply valve and no water enters the system, points to the fact that the valve is not energizing and has likely failed or that the valve is not getting any power. Also it is not uncommon for water to drip out of a saddle valve when opened fully. These valves are common but are not necessarily the best for longevity. These valves are tapped into existing water lines, and are usually done in quick installs. As long as it doesn't drip when opened normally then it shouldn't be a problem but in a lot of cases its still recommended to get a ball valve installed.

At 2:04, where you reconnect the water supply line - I didn't pay attention to what it looked like when I disconnected mine, but when I tried to reconnect, the ring-shaped part (I think it's called the compression sleeve) doesn't fit inside the nut, like shown in the video. It sits on top, so I'm not able to screw the nut onto the solenoid valve. Is that normal? Right now I've got the tube connected to the solenoid valve through the compression nut and put gorilla tape around to reduce leaks. The available parts show the nut and sleeve as being 5/16", so in theory one wouldn't fit inside the other. I'm just wondering if I should order replacement parts.

Thanks for watching. In a compression fitting there is the base, a compression ring (or sleave), and a compression nut. The ring should fit over the water line. As the compression nut is tightened it will push the ring down and will seal the water line. Do you have a compression ring/ sleeve from the original solenoid valve that you can use?

@@AmreSupply Yes, the ring is from the original unit.

@@HM-ob7ju Does the new solenoid have the same size threads and nut?
@HM-ob7ju
@HM-ob7ju Жыл бұрын
@@AmreSupply The new one actually didn't come with a new nut or ring, so I have to use the old ones or order new ones. The nut fits around the threads without the ring. I may contact the manufacturer to see if they can walk me through it. There is also some water leaking from the pipe at the top so I might need to get someone in to look at it anyway. Thanks for your replies 🙂

Hi there. I have a 1042LH humidifier. I seem to have to replace the solenoid every year. This year the water was always running through the solenoid as if the valve was stuck open. So i bought a new solenoid. If humidifier is turned off then water does not run. If i turn on the humidifier then the water flows non stop when heater is off. any suggestions? Thanks

Hi Nijad, In a lot of furnaces, the humidifier is wired into the furnace to add moisture to the air any time the furnace is running. In some cases the humidifier is wired to a humidistat which will control when the solenoid valve opens. Its best to check the wiring to make sure that its all connected correctly as the wrong wiring could cause the solenoid to stay open. Reference your manual. If you are unsure or uncomfortable, then contact a professional to look into it.

Hi AMRE Supply, I have q, is water should immediately goes though humidifier when furnace starts running? Or it should receive some "information" for start? Unfortunately I do not have water from the first day (about 2 weeks already). I think the solenoid should be replaced. And anyway answer on the q above will be helpful. Thank you

Hi Jet, thank you for watching. It depends on if your home has a humidistat. A humidistat will monitor the humidity and will only signal for the solenoid to open when the humidity gets below a set level. In some cases the humidifier is wired directly to the furnace to run only when the furnace is running.

@@AmreSupply Thank you so much for fast response. It's so nice of you. In my house the humidifier has humidistat which allows controlling % of humidity between 10-45%, like everyone has for sure. And like you said, it's wired directly to the furnace. As well I have fresh air supply (huge tank in the basement) with his own dehumidistat (put att. it's a dehumidistat). It looks like I need deeper to understand how my humidifier on furnace connected and installed.

@@jetlavi Overall when the humidistat calls for humidity, the humidifier solenoid will open. You should be able to hear the solenoid click as it energizes. As well the solenoid should be receiving a low voltage signal from the humidstat / furnace, this is 24v.

@@AmreSupply You saved me :). I moved control of humidistat to 35% and heard this click, which let water flow. At last! So, now, following digital reader (32%) and my personal feelings, the humidity in my home got normal level last two days. As I understand, the humidistat let opening solenoid on 30%. And why on 30% and not lower level? Does every humidistat work this way? ..Thank you so much!

Replace the distributor tube?
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. The distributor tube should be replaced if it is cracked or leaking. If it is just clogged with a mineral buildup then it can be cleaned with vinegar.

Hi, I've turned on the water supply valve but it only slowly drips even if I've opened the water valve all the way. Does the solenoid have to be replaced?
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeneesum, if you hear the solenoid engage, or click then it is likely that its still functioning but there could be a blockage in the solenoid or orifice leading into the solenoid. You could try cleaning it but a mineral buildup can be difficult to remove in a small part like the orifice. The orifice can be replaced and is less expensive than replacing the solenoid. www.amresupply.com/part/12258985
