My grandfather taught my dad to go high where they move. My dad showed me the same. I let younger breeders walk on by that would make most hunters cry. Keeping the numbers up is important to me. There are not the number of animals today as in my dads time. We all married after 30. That really stretches generations out. My grandfather was born over 110 years ago. I’m not even 50 yet. Things have really changed, but pulling higher harder terrain gets you away from people. It gets you into big older game that don’t come down as soon. Thanks for showing your hunts. Even a well seasoned hunter learns, and should.

Great video Randy! You've summed up a proper hunter's approach to opening day. However, there is one more point to be added: Concerning the parking lot with all the hunting pickups, many hunters lay squatter's claim to a favorite area. Even if you get there first, they will hunt right over the top of you!

In my experience I've found elk can see me and they won't spook or they can hear me and they won't spook, they make a lot of noise themselves but when they can smell me the jig is up. Even if they don't get a good solid sniff but little bits of scent from swirling winds they will leave the area. They might not go far though.

Mr. Newberg, thank you for the great videos. I am learning so much. My brother and nephews are planning out our very first OTC Elk hunt in Colorado in 2017. I am finalizing my list of things to buy. Thanks again and keep up the great work!!!

That bull never flinched after you shot him that is amazing and surprising. Can you get over the counter elk cow tags? Or is the tag for either bull or cow? We have a general whitetail tag you can shoot buck or doe with your tag.
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 6 жыл бұрын
I'm still amazed how a pass through of both lungs could happen and not a flinch. Some units have left-over cow tags. You have to go to the CPW website to find out. Always OTC bull tags for 2nd and 3rd rifle season in 90+ units.
@drexxler138
@drexxler138 6 жыл бұрын
Depends on the state you live in. In AZ the OTC elk tags cover both at any size, but certain areas have certain restrictions. But my favorite place will allow you to take any pretty much all year round.

Lots of research. I use goHUNT.com for a big part of my research, given it provides so much information in one website. I look at success rates for the seasons I have open in my calendar, amount of public lands, bull:cow or buck:doe ratios, recent fires, recent weather patterns, tag trends, and a lot of other factors, all of which are combined to make a decision about a new area. Most every area I hunt is a new unit to me.

Yes, those closed trails are great . We camped at the roundabout on a closed trail big dirt mound the forest service had put in front of the trail with a sign ...no motorized vehicles beyond this point...the opening morning over the counter bull tags 3rd season Colo. 3 day old snow.. a few tracks around camp , but the farther you hiked up that goat trail the more fresh tracks...at around 4 miles in you could smell,em ..it was gettin late ,seem,s to get dark around 4/4:30...next morning started out at o4:30...wile getting breakfast ready on an open fire...waiting on the young,uns i thought i heard and felt something big move behind me ..did not pay much attention to it ..at 05:30 we started out .just out of camp we stopped to lock &load i noticed some tracks in the very fresh snow...The tracks were about 18 inches long and as wide as my hand..looked like bare foot man tracks..super fresh, we counted 41 tracks along the timber into brush you could not crawl through into a steep drainage..i mean steep!.....took a few photos of the tracks next to a dollar bill . Next i loaded my desert eagle before heading into those woods ...at about 3 miles up we started to feather out peeling off the main trail....tracks every place at around 7:00 we herd a shot below us then one more, then all hell broke loose ..We spent four days tugging on six bulls 2/four bi fours 2 five bi fives and a six bi six .The herd bull i killed in sage brush that had to be 5 foot tall a six bi seven palmated monster at 80 feet...those trail blocked goat trails are a great place to hunt...only saw one other hunter ,he was heading up wile we were dragging out a bull...about an hour later we all herd 2 shots..from on top...he killed a nice six bi six on his first elk hunt feeding in the timber just off that goat trail..we helped that young man slide the whole elk out on our tarp.. public land over the counter tag,s!

Magnification ranges, lens coatings, and other options available. A VX-3 will have a 3X range of magnification, such as a 3-9X or 4-12X. A VX-6 will have a 6X range of magnification, such as a 2-12X or 3-18X.

masskilla469 Depends on what you call "wide angle." Since most their scopes are variable, the lower power will give you a very wide field of view. There is no scope, by any company, that is high magnification and wide FOV. Hope that helps.

Randy so I shot my first elk this year and I tried filming it. it was not bad but it could have been much better. I used only a gopro so I could not film much as if filming the elk. And there where tons of them up there. I really love to film hunts. What cheap but good camcorder would you recommend. I want to make a series of hunting videos and I want them to be good like yours. Any advise? Thank you for spending your time on me. if you want check our my video and email me where to improve and how to improve. Thank you very much and Goodluck the rest of this season. if I'm really annoying then just ignore me. Thanks.

A GoPro is a POV (point of view) camera. Hard to get much value beyond 20 yards. Our cameras are pretty expensive ($5,000+). A good camera for the price and small to carry is the Canon XA-20. Still a chunk of money, but provides an image better than anything in the price range. Just expect that filming will mess up plenty of shooting opportunities. Always use a tripod, don't over use zoom, and get good audio.Try to tell a story that involves a hunt, not just a kill shot. Good luck.
