I honestly think Lucas and Maya are better together. Ok Riley had a crush on Lucas first, but there is a love triangle as early as season 1 and we see it in almost every episode. The story goes on and I feel a big chemistry between Lucas and Maya than between Lucas and Riley. I understand that this is the main character but she has a perfect life, a perfect family. Which is quite the opposite for Maya. Morals would have been a lot better if Riley knew the harshness and reality of life (the broken heart) and if Maya knew that life is more than disappointment and that she would know true love. Maya was afraid of her feelings and she sacrificed herself for Riley. I think Lucas didn't have enough time to make up his mind. He didn't know what to do because he liked both. I wonder if Lucas would have reconsidered his decision if there had been other seasons. I think Maya has loved Lucas from the start but she was so scared of losing riley and has no trust in love that she didn't say anything.

I'm not saying Riley's a bad friend but in season 1 when both Farkle and Lucas took Maya and Riley on a date, Maya was hurt because of what happened with Josh. Everyone could see that Maya was hurt, even Lucas, yet Riley had to ask Lucas if she could talk to Maya when she was in real pain. The fact that she even had to ask for confirmation kind of bothered me.

I think Lucas only chose Riley because he felt he had to. He knew Maya wouldn't forgive him if he'd chosen her because it would have hurt riley and eventually led to Maya and riley probably not being friends. He chose riley to protect them both. It probably hurt Maya a lot but not as much as she would have been hurt seeing Riley upset. I like to think later down the line that Riley and Lucas break up and Riley finds someone that loves her and only her, and that Lucas and Maya end up together once years have passed and Riley has healed. Basically just my way of making the end of the show not as bad as it was....

it was so obvious at times how much more Maya cared about Lucas compared to Riley. One of the clearest examples is when she tells him not to ride the bull because she was worried sick for him, whereas Riley was agreeing with pretty much everything Lucas was doing because she had a crush on him and wanted him to like her.
