She stopped being herself and in the video you see her not being her self you see her essentially being numb because she's being something else and that's why they didn't like it. Riley says this and yet claims that because Maya finally feels safe and comfortable with her new father figure and not denying her feelings for the sake of Riley, that she has "become her". When in reality, Maya felt comfortable enough and supported enough to grow and change like everyone else does in a healthy environment. " i have hope now" vs " You're always wrong or you're always right, idk i don't listen I just stick up to you automatically." The truth is Maya is growing and changing. She went from deep trauma surrounding her dad and being the "bad girl" to finally exploring new things now that she isn't in such a deep hole. She knows who she is, and the person who she lets walk all over her and tell her who she isn't the most, is ironically, Riley, her best friend. Now Maya is insisting that that's who she is. Finally standing up to Riley in the entirety of the show whole Riley goes "la la la" and not listening. You can even scroll through the comments and see the video creators response and comments on this exact thing. This is what she was trying to prove. She's numb because now she's backpedaling. And she did do so because the show's creator knew they were being cancelled and couldn't continue with this storyline. You can research more on this. But basically, the storyline is that Maya, because this change and confidence is so very new, and because she never stood up to Riley before, she reverted back to her original self. Denying her feelings for Lucas and going back to "I just want to put Riley's needs above my own." Having someone, especially your best friend, sabotage, even if that wasn't their intention, your growth is super confusing. Maya finally wants nice things and is overwhelmed and filled with guilt, cuz the second she isn't in detention anymore, Riley tells her to change who she is. That's why Maya feels numb. That's why the video ends with "I owe you an apology Ms.Hart" "Everybody does". You can read the video description and tumblr theories if they are still there.

Heather - keep in mind the WHOLE group thought she wasnt good enough to be a cheerleader because she'd tried out before and wasn't that great. I think the thing between shawn and riley was just a joke. Riley judged Maya for finally getting good grades and being happier and having hope again, which is something Maya deserves an apology for. It was huge and rude as hell for Riley to say the things she did. Riley wanted Maya to be better at school and happier and have hope and then the second she did she told Maya that she needed to change back to who she was.

It's not that they're "freaking out" about her changing. It's the way she's doing she starts to become less and less of herself Riley is right in this case but maya doesn't see it. Riley did change maya but just a little too much until she starts to find herself again. The episode where maya comes across her old " friends" is. Good example of the real maya. She didn't sit back and let them talk to her the way they did or try and push her to be something she's not. She stood up to them and put them in their place and made the right decision to not vandalize the status that's how Riley impacted her she made the right choice.

The only thing I Think is. People do change people and that's the theme. And i think they tried to show that not everyone will agree with the changes. Even if that's how they wanted you to be in the first place. But I could be reading it wrong.

The writers are/were fully aware. Riley can be wrong and the diagnosis of what was happening with Maya was wrong. They did it intentionally. “The story has holes, man!” Someone on twitter asked if Farkle would ever be the _old_ Farkle again and they responded with him still being Farkle and how _clothes don’t make the man._

What upset more about this whole thing is that, it was all Farkle fault. Farkle manipulated Riley. When Riley found out on Texas that Maya likes Lucas, she immediately stepped back and said " Well you're right, I love him like a brother " because she noticed that Maya did that for her the last 2 years. But then, there was Farkle, and his "I know everything way", Riley said to him "Maya stepped back for me when she knew that I liked Lucas, if she has feelings for him how could I not do the same for her? Then Farkle manipulated her to believe that Maya didn't really like Lucas by answering "You don't that, you don't know how Maya feels, I don't think she knows how she feels". He was the one who said all this stupid stuff to Maya, not once, and made Riley doubt abt her friends feelings and even personality. Farkle was the one who did Riley forget who her best friend is, I think what happens here is that actually Riley is the one who lost herself not believing in her best friend anymore, and bring manipulated by Farkle, then everything turned into a mess, and a lotta people got it's decisions interfered by the consequences of this entire stupid thing.

She did become Riley. She even admits that. It wasn’t about grades and hair. Riley even says that Maya wouldn’t take anything from anybody, ESPECIALLY when her teacher came after something precious to her, but she did. Riley trampled all over her in that conversation to prove that point. It was never about boys, or grades, or detention. It was about Maya not standing up for who she was anymore.

Reason being, you can't really predict who you are going to like and I get why the person who liked them first would be angry but it's still a bit unreasonable. You can't stop someone from liking who they like and in the end, it's the crush who chooses who they want to be with so......yeah this whole thing is just flawed. Its not a decision you can make like that and Maya was evidently conflicted about her feelings. She didn't intentionally start to like him.

I think they're trying to tell the viewers to be yourself, but they failed on that and instead taught a bad lesson (getting yourself into trouble).

And the other good lesson that the writers are trying to teach, is that the people we surround ourselves with influence us.

The writers are shit, they created this triangle by accident and when people started watching the show because of it, they explored it.. but in the end (again, because they are shit) they went for the cliche romance that screams disney all over it, gave the worst explanation in the history of explanations for the triangles's "solution", and destroyed what could have been they're best school lesson: First love is not always the only person you are going to fall in love with, and it's even more special the second time because it teaches you that you can be loved again.
