Ali Express mystery boxes! The true enigmas of life! Unless you buy them and open them. Basically, it seems to be a way of clearing stock and charging you more for it at the same time, which may be a stroke of evil genius (assuming anyone's buying them.)
Anyway, I bought three of differing values and ended up with an impractical and grotesque keyring, a naff watch, some outdated tech, some deprecated tech, and a very pretty thing. Which one was Huggy Wuggy from Poppy's Playtime? You'll have to watch the video to find out! (Or read this word: Keyring.)

I dunno. That motto might be valid for 'mystery' boxes, but I use them a lot for known products and rarely get a dud. I'd NEVER buy one of the mystery boxes though.

@@LeviathanRX It most likely isn't. Why hand out "lucky" boxes, when people effectively have no means of checking whether you do that at all? Just stuff unsellable crap in a box, put no label on it and sell it as a "mystery box" for twice the price. The only time a mystery box is "lucky" is when the seller knows that they're sending it to a big youtuber.

The moral of the story should be: "Don't buy mystery boxes." The early mystery boxes like Lootcrate might have been a fun albeit expensive surprise, but now it seems mystery boxes are just a way for vendors to unload junk that they can't sell. Even the ones that technically give you more value than you pay for end up containing a bunch of junk you will never use and will have a hard time reselling.

They were always a way to offload junk that they couldn't sell otherwise. It's just that the first person to capitalize on it gets to take advantage of the deals, but it has an upper limit to popularity, because as soon as it becomes a good deal, it becomes less profitable, and thus a shite deal. It's basically bulk arbitrage.

It's genuinely amazing that the quality has only improved, but the "soul" of the content hasn't at all, and his viewership has stayed steady through the years. Granted, all his most popular videos are many years old - but its from cumulative views over 8 or 9 years, and he still has million plus view videos as recently as a year or two ago.

That's been the whole logic of mystery boxes for many decades.. Promise the potential to get amazing goods, but in reality you use it to unload junk you otherwise cannot sell for that price. If you show "examples" of what might be in the box, then you *might* actually send a few super-lucky lottery winners one of those items just so you can successfully defend against any legal accusations of your mystery box being fraudulent, but you might not even bother (or will just lie and/or fake the evidence on the off chance someone calls you out.)

@@BainesMkII oh, I was pretty sure that the point was paying bit less for the merch than was the regular price, because the MB business can buy it for lower price because they could get volume discount and well... because no one wants most of that merch. So while you cannot sell most of the merch for reasonable price (because no one wants it), the overall regular price of all items should still be bit higher than the price of MB, which clearly isn't the case of those in the video...

I actually use one of those cheap Chinese light things in my bedroom at night. It has modes that it just stays on and projects a few gentle light patterns, and I use it as an evening light before bed because the overhead light gives me a headache after a while. It can also play audio as well, though I don't use that, haha.

The empty envelope registered that I had received the Mystery Box, and no matter what I said to Ali Express, they wouldnt give me my money back. Good thing I only paid $5.00 Canadian. The disco lights actually DOES have Bluetooth. There's a button to switch from USB to BT. It works well too. I used one the other night!

Urgh, the glass dome on the night light thing reminded me of this 80s car air fresheners that looked like traffic lights. The ones that were supposed to alleviate travel sickness (I think) but just made everybody within a 5 mile radius feel slightly queasy.

we all live with Stuart now!! the sofa, the kitchen, the restroom, the bar room, the patio, the shelf, the drawer, and now the disco love room (or bedroom when tat isn't turned on).
