After Andrew Huberman said 14092 times I Should mediate.... I decided to try mediating. I followed his protocols & tried many others from zen to movement meditaiton...to laying on the hard ground. In hopes it can help me balance my dopamine impulses, improve focus, decrease anxiety, and even promote creativity. Is meditaiton truly the performance enhancing tool leading to the success of the athletes musicians CEO's and more... or is it simply doing nothing for 10 minutes a day.... Enjoy one of the last episodes of My Wellness Diaries

Great video Keltie. It’s important to note that meditation isn’t about not thinking about anything, it’s about noticing thoughts as they arise and catching yourself and redirecting your attention back to noticing when you are inevitably distracted. It’s all about building muscle to be more present, not to have your mind be a blank slate.

Meditation teacher here 👋🏼 I’m proud of you for sticking to the whole 30 days and finding your own flow! It’s normal for it to be uncomfortable and overwhelming at first, like you experienced. It’s like our brains are email inboxes crammed full but after practicing for a while we catch up and the emails (thoughts) start coming one by one. I hope you keep going!!

I like (what I call) mini mindfulness -- taking a minute or two to just be. I drink a lot of tea, so I usually do this by making a cup of tea. I spend a minute or two with my tea, just holding the mug. Feeling it's warmth. Breathing in the steam. Savoring the taste of the tea itself. It's a nice little reset in my day too!

I only do guided meditations (at the moment Balance, but before I tried Headspace and 7 Mind and can recommend all three apps) and I love it. A few years ago when I was still in college, I meditate consistently every day and I got into a great headspace (pun intended). Helped me a lot with focus, anxiety, panic attacks, etc. I re-started my mediation journey a few weeks ago and I already see a good amount of improvement in focus, sleep (especially on those days where I mediate) and stress levels. It helps a lot with those intrusive thoughts (those "Do you guys ever think about dying?" Barbie thoughts) that come in at random times, kick down the door and decide to move into your brain. Meditation is like a 200 pound security guard for those guys and sends them back right where they came from - even in my day to day life. So that's a huge advantage :)

lol Keltie I remember when you did every Huberman sleep protocol except for NSDR- I'm glad you finally tackled a meditation challenge and are helping to make meditation more approachable to your audience! I remember Huberman saying in the meditation podcast you referenced that it's actually a win every time your focus wanders off because its an opportunity to redirect attention and rewire neural patterns. I try to remind my students of this because just like anything else it takes practice and patience!

@@KeltieOConnordefinitely soothing sounds that calm you down helps me. I’m not someone who can have silence because I can’t pull my mind away from the future or the past but if I put on soothing and soft sounds (can’t be too loud because then I get distracted by my thoughts AND the music) really help me bring my attention to my breathing and how I feel in my body. I also use it for spiritual purposes but that’s a different thing in itself. Have you thought about using binaural beats? They have different frequencies that are supposed to have different effects on your mind or body depending on the frequency. I’m also a fellow adhder so, yay. Love the way my brain works (sometimes). It’s hard to be a responsible adult lol 😂

First of all, your office mates are such good sports! Kudos to them for trying meditation, walking treadmills, and supplements. Second, I've been meditating for about 8 years now and I think you did a great job covering this topic. There's such a stereotype that you have to sit perfectly still in lotus with zero thoughts in your mind, and that perfect image actually prevents people from starting! Meditation can be sitting and staring at a candle flame, it can be listening to music, it can be a runner's high as you hear your breath and feel your feet hit the ground rhythmically! Whatever brings you to the present moment and brings you calm. Now, for people who need more mindfulness (a fancy term for just getting out of your own head) then paying attention to the body and the sensations is great, but you don't always need to be as still as a statue to get that. Sometimes it can be running or doing yoga or even dancing! Just be present ❤ and if you do have a negative thought or some other distraction, just let it go and go back to what you were doing. Meditation doesn't need to be hard.

I like to picture tying my thoughts to a balloon and letting it go as they come. It comes and I let it go. It’s all about taking a moment for yourself- it’s not about being good at it, it’s about loving yourself enough to take a minute. You got this!

Meditation is like running or any other habit we want to form. I’ve been seriously working on meditation all year (2023) and recently had a 70-day streak of meditating. This habit has been good for feeling more calm and a part of my daily routine. The app Insight Timer has been helpful for me because it has guided ones you can pick from. I have a fave meditation for mornings and a couple faves for nighttime when I am stressed and want to fall asleep quickly. I hope you keep exploring this journey! 💛

Keltie, I love your content. As someone who has meditated for some years now, this was really cool to see. I have such empathy for the frustration you experienced and some of the learning curves. Meditation can be incredibly deceptive when you start out. It feels like putting in the effort to (try to) quiet the mind and be present only makes the mind louder, more chaotic, and difficult to deal with, and then all your opinions about that chaos come up and you've lost track of where you were. I commend you for giving this a shot. I wanted to note something. Disclaimer: I don't know you personally, I don't work your job, I don't pay your bills, I have no clue what it is like to be in your shoes! In that sense, I mean immense respect and just wanna note something I saw. I'm currently reading a couple books on people pleasing-- it has been a great stressor of mine putting others' needs before my own and as we roll into 2024, that part of myself will no longer be welcome on my terms-- and 4:02 really spoke to me. Deeply trying to meet the wishes of others and all the while wondering if they even value you and your labor. I don't know if it's an issue you face too, but just remember that you come first. Food for thought would be 2024 may be a good year for you to find out what calm looks and feels like to you. Maybe meditation helped you tap into what a calm mind and body feels like and over time, you can develop an internal clock/understanding of "I am feeling anxious and overstimulated right now, I need to take a breath" and this is then what helps prevent panic attacks. After 10+ years of an incredibly stimulated nervous system and terrible anxiety all the time, I've developed an understanding of my body and mind. I know what it feels like when I'm very overwhelmed and I know what it feels like at ease. It's messy and imperfect but being able to wake up and go "*breathe* I am feeling anxious right now. What slow, conscious decision can I make about this?" and teach my body and mind to disarm is powerful. Panic attacks for me are about "How can my thoughts 'It is okay, you are safe' translate into my nervous system?" Keep making great videos! **I meditate in tandem with therapy and medication and years of self-work. Meditation as a catch-all cure is BS, thank you.

The biggest benefit I’ve found with meditation practice is outside of the practice. I can’t catch spiraling thoughts in the moment in life when they are happening. It’s not when I’m sitting to meditate but while I’m working or trying to get things done. I am able to witness my mind sending me towards panic and stop it there in that moment much quicker than a 20 minute spiral that gets me nowhere

Key tip- just notice the thoughts - is it a thought or a feeling? Like on balloons - notice them and let them go. Don’t judge the thoughts - just let them go. Some days it’s more about emotions than thoughts. No judging. Just return to the breath. In 1 out 2 - in 3 out 4. Count to 10 and return. No mediation session will be the same. Headspace is an amazing app!! Get it

Closest I ever got was Bikram Yoga bc 90 mins of not falling over in 42degree heat definitely requires presence....so damn you Bikram for being a sleaze and now it doesn't exist. Normal yoga is fine as exercise, but not as meditation. anyway, going on a run or a walk - especially as I do live near the ocean and I can watch nature in all its power is great - love that and it clears my head

A really relateable video! I saw so many videos about meditaion always hated even the idea and never wanted to even try. But maybe its also possible for me… About the laying on the floor. I always do that after a run, for like 5 minutes. When you get inside and its so warm and you need to calm down. Another thing: I saw a video, about needlemats and there seems to actually be some sience what laying on the floor and on needlemats does to your body and how it releases emotions, also that it can trigger so many emotions that it gets to much for peopele who haven’t dealt with some issues. Maybe that is another topic for a future video. Love your content;) greetings from germany!

Everytime I try meditation it just doesn’t feel like it’s worth it for me. Running and walking has always been my meditation and calms my mind. I think you’re like me from what this video seems

I think a loooot of people hear the word 'meditation' and their mind instantly thinks of people talking softly and sitting in a quiet room by yourself and the like, that's certainly where I used to struggle with the idea. Heck I don't even take baths because I'm bored af after less than five minutes (I do still shower before any comedians come at me lol). There's no 'one size fits all' and some people may even benefit from doing a little bit of everything, depending on where they're at that day or what their schedule is like. Also, being in a flow state counts as meditating, because you're still mindful and focusing, but you're blocking out everything else that's distracting you and 'in the moment'. Hope your meditation journey continues to prosper :) oh and happy holidays, have a good rest and see you in the new year!

You gotta try LAVENDAIRE! *LOVE* her guided meditations because they are relatively short and have sounds in the background, and she also has some for anxiety, and a 5-minute one for each morning that has pretty much saved my life. I would love a compilation with you two, also! Also, as a fellow ADHD girlie who also suffers from anxiety, I would be SO aware of the camera's eye that I could NEVER have appreciated it while filming! I know it's your job, but I *HIGHLY* recommend you try without the camera in the future to be able to truly relax without the knowledge that tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people will be seeing you do this. Just my tips!

ugh i hate that people who are trying to popularize meditation among the masses always need to drag science into it (like that description of loving kindness meditation you read out loud); as a yoga teacher it is just so clear to me that it is a spiritual practice NOT a religious practice. really its a practice of finding who is the I and identifying more and more with the awareness rather than with the content of awareness.... i hope you carry on with it because it literally changed my life and i know it will change yours too. being active and going to a rave is great but nothing beats sitting silently with yourself for an hr...

As a religious person I find meditation key to maintaining anxiety and also improving my self perception. I try to budget an hour a week to meditate for an hour in silence. I’ve done that for 2 years now. And through time it has remained even in hard times. It’s great for working through emotions.

I’m a big fan of meditation, but it takes a while to settle in to it. And I have to use either a mantra or do breathing pattern ones (counting out an inhale-hold-exhale-hold pattern) because just “observing my breath and thoughts” is not happening in my busy brain. And my “holy grail” motivation is that I read a study that found that people who meditated for I think 30 minutes every day changed their brains to ones like those of people “who had a happy childhood”. Change my actual brain?!? I’m in!

Your videos make me homesick for Vancouver, this one especially. In the best way. You hit all my favourite spots/city walks/views. Glad you got footage before the rainy season really started. Idea: can you do a video (for science, lol) comparing a week giving into the "Dopamine Gremlins" and a week of earned "good dopamine" habits. I wonder what would change in mood etc. Merry Christmas!

4:55 I find cold helps with anxiety and panic quite a bit. Ice water to sip on, an ice pack right on the chest for a few seconds, cold air on the face, something cold on the wrists or inner elbows

My favourite position to meditate is to lie on the mat on the floor with my hands open facing up - I don't have the right words to describe this but it helps to gorund my mind (punny?) And allows me to be open to what the meditation has to offer (mentally and spiritually).

Happy Holidays Keltie, have safe trips and see you in the New Year! I am happy you finally gave meditation a solid try and found methods that work for you. I like meditation but haven't yet built a habit of it. I'll do it every once in a while but I would like to make it a part of my daily wellness routine. I guess I should actually make a wellness routine.

KELTIE!!! I love this! I love that you are willing to try new things and share with us 🤍 It’s so relatable and I swear we are living the same life lol I started meditating this past summer. I highly recommend Dr Joe Dispenza. He does this “walk for the world” that is incredibly powerful. Anyways his book “Breaking the habit of being yourself” provides a good foundation of the why and how of meditation for those who are looking to explore ✨🙏

"zero hallucinations".... proceeds to draw a mushroom haha..... usually i find it easiest and best just to find a way to get your mind to stop running/focusing/thinking for a few minutes and enjoy something simple (scenery/views/ the outdoors) while obviously this is understandably more difficult for some folks, taking a few minutes out each day just to chill never hurt nothing....off topic, did want to say that it's been about a year now since I got back into the swing of things and I've been subscribed to your channel for as long, I did want to say thank you for both the work and helping keep folks in the right direction... merry x-mas Keltie, enjoy those 2 weeks off (side note was curious how the 75 challenge went?)

Notice the mind wander, don't judge, just bring your focus back to the breath or a mantra. Sometimes I find breathwork less overwhelming. Maybe you could try breathwork for 30 days......

The only meditation I could ever do is the one on Netflix from Headspace because it tells a story of X minutes before getting to the exercice, and the French voiceover is so soothing that, with time it became a safe place and now since I always mediate in a lying position I end up 9,9/10 sleeping before even getting to the meditation part 😂😂😂😂

Hi Keltie! 🔥 Im also a dopamine junkie, and VERY (diagnosed) adhd, and i LOVE the Deliciously Ella app (Ella Mills, it also has yoga and plantbased recipes, i’ve been using it daily for years now, its amazing). I do the guided meditations, because meditating without sound makes me anxious as well. Her app is amazing!! (Love the Jess Baccanello-Woods and James Dowler breathworks and meditations). If you try a a guided meditation thats really relaxing and just works for you it helps a lot, because lots of meditations on the internet aren’t suited for me😉❤️ I do them at night in bed, 10 minutes. Its amazing.
