It's very possible to get true pitch. 👍 It worked for me when I was young and since I was young it became perfect pitch. So anythings possible

Or pitch memory. I can sing the first note of some songs I know well, like nursery rhymes I sing to my son (nobody sings those in a different key each night!). So for example I can sing a G and my tuner says it’s bang on, but I only know those notes and would have to use my pretty poor relative pitch to figure out other notes.

If we subtract our tuning that we always use (A = 442Hz) from 415Hz, it’s 27 cents LOWER than the original tuning, so Brett would hear everything a semitone LOWER if that was the case. Not sure I'd call writing sheet music "drawing". I can't draw to save my life, but if I did and I was asked to draw something that I am completely unfamiliar with, wouldn't it make sense to look at a reference picture or two?

I'd like to add, there's the admin side and the 'drawing side' of the workplace. I'm on the admin side, hence we do the sending. And the team (admin+artists) have a quota of 30 articles per working week so things might get overlooked by the artists especially when the drawings are repeatedly returned if WH does not approve them (and stacked on top of our weekly quota+other returns from previous weeks.) It's a slave work, not art at all The artists are paid less than minimum wage and are overworked af. One illustration has to be done in 10 minutes if we want to get to our quota

Woww that‘s very cool!! I can sing pieces in the same keys as they are written, so when I sing it to my pitch tracker app it works and i can then play the right melody on the piano. But how do you deal with pitches in different octaves, because a G and a G an octave higher sound not the same for me?

It's called relative pitch and my musician friends have told me that they think it's even better than perfect pitch because it has a "context" for each sound, and that helps them think more creatively.

I think this whenever I see a video where they're singing even semi-seriously. I forget which video it was but he was messing around in his upper range and I was just like: this man has some potential as a vocalist.

Hmmm. The artist would of course try to do it correctly. Even if they are not paid well, they still want to honor that payment. They were probably not given the right instructions. Obv, the editor of the page and the author didn't bother to correct things.

@@lvlyflrs3736 as an artist myself yes artists should usually do some proper research on stuff to draw but its so common to see it not be the case because most artists only do surface level research/referencing to get their point across how many pieces of art of musicians have you see with inaccurate techniques? same thing is happening here

Perfect pitch doesn't mean you're musically talented in the same way that knowing every single colour in the Pantone registry doesn't make you a great artist. Perfect pitch is so misunderstood. Loads of people have it that will never pick up an instrument.

@@CountDrunkula Yes, and as a pianist it is not so critical. But, I was also hoping to compose and maybe someday conduct. I could feel music. Even in high school I loved and understood late Beethoven. But, no amount of ear training would make me qualified to conduct the ninth symphony with any orchestra good enough to play it. Linda could hear in her mind any combination of innovative harmonies or counterpoint melodies with accidentals without struggling. She had tools for creativity that I simply did not have. My first year of college was a music major. Reality caused me to switch to physics. The discipline of practice with goals in my early years did me well; I am glad for the discipline acquired by the hours practiced. I am also glad that I recognized my limitations early enough to make a professional career change while I still could.

Yes, that is called relative pitch, and it's a good thing to have. People with relative pitch have good ears and can sing very well in tune. There's some drawbacks to perfect pitch such as transposing, but people with relative pitch do not seem to have that issue. Good job on ear training.

this is not relative pitch, this is memory pitch. It's a good skill too, any skill that helps you to achieve your goals is really good.

As a killjoy, I can confirm that I can always know when a G note is being played (that, and A and C bc I play violin)

When I was a kid I played fur Elise so many times on my piano that I can hear E and Eb in my head, from there I can use relative pitch to find a lot of notes. I'm not a musician though so I don't really use it very often and it can be hard to find some notes. I'm sure if I practice I can use this to have pretty fast relative pitch.

Relative pitch

Pitch memory. To some people, it's quite easy, and they naturally remember melodies in the original key. To other people (like me), it's basically impossible (I have 20 years of musical experience, and I have transcribed and learned a lot of stuff by ear, so one would assume that if I had the potential to develop an accurate pitch memory, I would have already developed it). I can't rely on my pitch memory at all (sometimes I remember everything in the original key, but a lot of the time it's completely random). But I also have never found any use for it because my relative pitch is strong. All in all, being able to hear individual notes outside of context doesn't really have much application. The most useful skill is being able to hear how the notes relate to the key and chords. That's how I can instantly figure out a melody or a chord progression. I simply don't know what key it's in, but that doesn't matter because I can transpose the note relationships I hear to any key. And if I need to know what key it's in, that's quite easy to figure out by trying a couple of notes on your instrument. Or I can use my vocal range as a guide (I know what the lowest note I can hit comfortably is). BTW, just tried the Black Parade trick (I have sometimes got it correct), and I was off by a major 3rd. Definitely not something I can trust. But as I said, I really don't think pitch memory has much real life application. Even Saxologic who developed "true pitch" (that is basically a pitch memory-based version of absolute pitch) couldn't use it like perfect pitch - there's a certain kind of a delay that kind of makes it useless in an actual musical context. A well-trained relative pitch on the other hand is basically instant, because different functions in a key have specific "colors" that you can learn to recognize.

Although pitch memory is not the same as perfect pitch. Automatically knowing any note in any octave including sharps and flats without thinking about it is perfect pitch. Relative pitch can be learned but you're born with perfect pitch. Maybe that's what you're saying already...😊

Try it with a sine wave instead of an instrument. It's the timbre you're recognizing.

@@R.Williams It's not that black and white - I CAN just identify a C, A, or F without reference, and it's reliable. Also, no, you're not born with absolute pitch - you learn it very early in life.

@@dinospumoni5611 My internal memory reference for A440 is literally a sine wave...so no. It's like...I hear a note, then I need to play it against one of my reference pitches in my head. Then, I do use relative pitch to figure it out, but I've had consistent and accurate memorized pitches for at least 15 years.

If a person develops it, they probably already had an accurate tonal memory, for example, they can already remember songs in the right key. My mind transposes any song I try to think of into the last key I heard or was in or according to my voice. Because of this lack of fixed tonal memory, I struggle to accurately produce the exact pitch without a reference. In the morning, I can sing an A because I haven't played music, but as soon as I play music, everything shifts and becomes relative.
