I have Pittsburgh Pro, Pittsburgh, Icon, and Tekton impact sockets. I've been using them for a while now as a weekend (and weekday) warrior- several times a week. The Icon definitely has the best fit and finish but none of them have let me down... The price difference between the two Pittsburghs is so trivial, there's no reason not to buy the Pittsburgh Pro. Tekton compares to Pittsburgh Pro in my opinion on overall quality control. Icon is definitely a cut above the two. Is it 2x the price better? Nah- haven't worn one out from any brand. Do I regret my purchase of the Icon set? Nope. It's more than paid for itself. None of these are that expensive in the first place compared to big brands... Happy customer here who will continue to buy Icon, Tekton, and Pittsburgh Pro. They all work harder than I do.

I've only used the Pittsburgh Pro. No issues. But, the skipping thing gets my OCD goin in high gear. I've been lookin at Capri, Sunex, Grey Pneumatic, and others. I really hate skips. It really shouldn't bother me really, since I'm not a Pro mechanic. But it does.

I'll also vouch for Sunex, awesome sockets. Bought the full 1/2 and 3/8 sets with swivels at a fraction of what our tool truck would have cost me. They feel great and 3/8s has zero skips all the way to 22mm which is handy sometimes

Thought maybe a crips video for a second HA. The swivel sockets I have are MAC, Snap-On, SK and GearWrench and Astro they all seem to work well but you will need to warranty them out over time because of the nature of a flex sockets on impacts. The most flexible are the GearWrench E Core, the Astro's are the best/ tightest to hold shape for placement and the others all work about the same.

Great topic, Dow. I don’t plan on buying any more ICON tools, aside from the breaker bar I purchased, but I look forward to reading the comments. The greatest advantage of shopping local, even the Big Box stores, over Amazon is we give better support for the local businesses and economy. From what I’ve read Amazon has taken away more jobs than they have created. And yes, it’s better to physically see and handle a product than it is to make a decision based on a picture.

I own set of Pittsburgh and man they are great! They kinda fit tight on fasteners until I broke them in but for the little money I paid I am VERY HAPPY with the Pittsburgh 1/2 Metric Impact Swivels. Think I paid 34.00 for full set 13mm-19mm

I have used the Pittsburgh pro Or regular Pittsburgh impact sockets cant remember which ones I got they came in a case with 1/2 and 3/8 anyways I've had them for about a year now and haven't had any problem with them. But Grey pneumatic has the best compete set of sockets ive found for reasonable i bought a 1/2 set from 10 to 36mm for around $116 off amazon.

that's what I'm talking about I'm no professional person but also think about the storage also not having to worry about buying better socket trays cause you have to put swivel on the stick it comes with have to take time let them off an add more money an time then to buy the icon an use the tray they are loose inside no prying or anything is stuck an it's one hand grab situation I agree on the skip sizes I'll pay the money for big non skip items for sure

I bought ONE 19mm Snap-On shallow impact socket, I've had it for only 7 months and its almost completely rounded out the drive side.I only use it about 3-4 times a day if that! Never going to buy snap-on sockets again. I got a set of sunex impacts and husky impacts and they hold up much better.

The pro are 4 years old look like they are 4 months old. Icon are Chrome moly the Pittsburgh pro are Chrome Vanadium Steel. I've been trying the grey pneumatic and they are great just as good as my Mac sockets

What happened to SK ( just broke my 9 inch 1/4 extension on on a hub bolt on a taurus ) but any way had a Pittsburg impact set for 15 plus years and upgraded to snap on probably for no reason cause they all still worked just fine but gave them to the nephew who used them to take out a 74 ford f100 motor without any problems.

I have the Pittsburg 13 piece 1/2 deep six-point impact metric sockets 9 years including dealer technician and they have been fantastic. I have the Sunex 3/8ths swivel impacts and Snap-on 1/4s they have held up well as one would expect. If icon was making them at the time...oh heck yeah i would have certainly jumped on them for $99 (and not to mention there is usually a 20% coupon on Icon) then its $79.99! I know they are pinned and probably cheaper metal then Snap-off... but lifetime warranty for the Icons and look just like my Sunex (probably the same tool maker) and similar to the Snap-on design. I too would love to hear how well the icons are holding up if they are really good i might sell my Sunex on ebay just for the simplicity of warranty returns to HF.

Since Pittsburgh has seemed to move to strictly laser etching, this matters to me along with the skipping, I've been looking at capri since they do both the laser etching and stamping, with a complete set. I don't know if the icon set is stamped or etched myself. But the capri set goes from 8-19mm for 99 also. Astro is another one I've been looking at to get with their 3/8 air ratchet (the onyx). On a side topic, maybe a bit off-topic, I've also been looking at the mechanics tool sets/kits and what annoys me the most is none seem to come with impact sockets. Which has led to me wonder why tool companies, especially those strictly online, don't offer a 'build your own kit' option? Take one of the kits they have, say the gearwrench 293 piece set, start there and then we can change/add/remove stuff as needed and the pricing adjusts accordingly. Because who really wants a 5th pair of pliers or crescent wrench or what not or another set of wrenches? I would like to see more options in the toolkit, especially impact sockets over chrome ones. Anyways great video. I also do prefer the local store shopping and going in and looking at things, but I do hate having to go to 10 stores to see all my options. I get why in some cases as pittsburgh, icon, kobalt, husky. But brands like gearwrench and tekton I would like to see elsewhere other than tractor supply, local hd does have a low selection of gearwrench though.
@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway
@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. It would be a really cool idea if two manufacturers would make a mechanics impact socket set. Having said that I know you can purchase complete half inch impact socket sets I know you can purchase a 3/8 drive and half-inch SAE and metric impact socket set with extensions in Universal studio Ranch Jeff has one on his truck that I was looking at, but does not include universal joints. I think the reason why they have not made a true mechanic set and the impact rated is because the metal is of a different quality and they would not be able to offer you the same style or assortment as they could The chrome because the impact metal typically weighs a lot more so imagine a little plastic handle you pick it up and it breaking and landing on your toe. Next thing you know lawsuit 🤣🤣🤣 But I get what you’re saying. Yeah check out the Gearwrench 3/8 drive half inch complete set. I put some links in the description I don’t know that I put that one there though. I’ll talk to Jeff on Tuesday and show you guys on Cool Tool Tuesdays video

It's great to save money but what happens when you inevitably lose a socket? None of the non rape truck (aka tool truck) options offer single socket replacements which leaves you either buying a different brand single socket or buying a whole socket set just to replace a single missing socket.
@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway
@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway 3 жыл бұрын
To be honest. When it comes down to it anyone that ends up selling it as an individualize socket versus the one that I bought that was sold as a set and does not sell individualize sockets I just buy the one upgraded socket and move forward. Now if there’s a way to buy that individual socket say husky craftsman etc. then I will do so or Buy from a big box store that does. If say for instance I bought it online then I will fill it with something from a big box store instead, If that is not an option, if not then I will buy it from a professional series tool truck

Lol I just buy a set cheap then get the socket trays at HFT and buy the missing sizes at Menards or off Amazon. Just today I was going through my tools and my 12 point sockets are all SK but in the trays there were missing sizes because SK doesnt make them. So I went on Amazon and bought the Tekton ones to fill in. Odds are I'll never need a 4mm 12 point 1/4" drive but at least the spot isnt empty lol.

I really don’t like snap on impacts. Like the small sizes have a long thin neck. But there so soft doesn’t take long till they just fall off impact anvils. But have had them from beginning of my career and still get them warranty so there’s that I suppose. Definitely got my money out of them.

All I can say is, I’m a pipeline tech. Been for 6 years or so now. I’ve been running the same set of pit. Pro impact sae that whole time. I’ve broke 1 socket. I use them everyday so for the 20-30 dollar price tag they are amazing in my point. But at home I have some icon in the shop. They seem nicer and I haven’t broke one yet either. So really when it comes to the impact of you want the name buy it. If not, just know I physically abuse these sockets daily, and they do not fail. Now the chrome sockets are a whole different discussion. Icon all the way compared to the pits.

I have the icons and The Pittsburgh's and have not had any trouble from either set but it is nice to have all the sizes . Ebay sells calhawk universals and look almost identical to the icon at about 30 percent cheaper . The part I don't like is the retaining ring for the pin in the icon and calhawk . It makes the socket bulky and hard ti fit in some places where the Pittsburgh is Slimmer . As far as box stores home depot cares the pinless universals in 3/8 drive I believe there made buy gear wrench . As far as bang for the buck astro tools pinless universal set or calhawk on ebay . I used armstrong and matco but had them for years . Another company is grey pneumatic or sunex there cheap on ebay as well and can pass for a old snap on design . I think the astro would be a good socket nice and slim profile especially when you're sneaking in a GM wheel bearing out but I tend to use a chrome one for that
