Can't wait for our buddy read! I like this series on Book Riot as well. Let's see, my book buying has been pretty tame lately. I got "Homegoing" through a book club connect, and I just purchased "The Association of Small Bombs" and "Democracy in Black" which I'm reading now.

I remember being mad at the "happy slave" bullshit when I read it (in middle school) & I also remember my step-mom telling me about how when the movie came out, tons of people walked out of the theater in the beginning of the movie. I looked at her & was like...well they missed what they really should've been mad about. To this day, though, I still have an overall fond memory of reading the book & I am stuck like chuck on the couch when the movie comes on. I also think, though, that in reading the book once & watching the movie over & over, I have romanticized more of the book than I originally did. Did that make sense? Glad to see you back. STAY!

+Musical Tati Gone With the Wind is my grandmother's absolute favorite movie so it was a huge part of my life growing up although I've never actually watched it from beginning to end. I believe my grandmother lived it so much because back then those black characters were basically the only ones they had. She complains about their portrayals sometimes but she watches it every time it comes on TV. There obviously something there in the story. I'm reading it to try and figure out what.

I'm the same way though! I don't know what it is but every time that movie comes on, I'm suck. TCM played it one night at like 11:30PM and I didn't realize there were no commercials until after 2AM!!! I was waiting for a commercial so I could move upstairs for the night & it never came and it took me all that time to realize it! And that was just about 5 years ago! I can't tell you how many times I'd watched that movie up to that point.

I look forward to any future thoughts you have about We Need to Talk About Kevin. It was definitely a unique experience reading it as someone who doesn't want children for reasons related to my own mental health issues and how that can affect a child. But also being an aunt to someone who grew up on the autism spectrum without the right attention paid to his health and seeing how much of that has little to do with his parents and their actions. I think the book was meant to be shocking, but it kind of just reiterated a lot of feelings I have about certain things. I haven't read Gone With the Wind, I don't think I have any intention to because I think my anger would probably take over my feelings of being entertained. I find it kind of frustrating that you're the only person I've heard talking about it on booktube and bringing up the racial issues and how the book is lacking in areas that it could have been great in. People seem to want to praise it in a "Whole" sort of way. I think some of that comes from people outside the US having some sort of romanticised view of the South, and even having lived there in the late 2000s, there was enough ugliness then, let alone the time of the Civil War era. I'm not saying people can't like the book, but it almost becomes an elephant in the room when they say nothing at all. Happy to see you back in my subscription feed! I'm currently doing a themed reading month, so it's all historical fiction, all the time right now.

+dorkabrain oh man. I'm on the fence about children and some of my own mental health issues factor into my trepidationso, so I totally feel you on that. Its one of the reasons that book really appeals to me. I will be filming a review next week because I have a lot of thoughts on it. I agree with you about the reviews on Gone With the Wind. People are just like "yeah it's racist but it's such a good story" and they try to use the time period to excuse it but I'm not sure how valid that argument is. I'm really curious to see how I'll feel as I read more of it. Currently taking a break from it right now to do a couple of buddy reads and challenges.

Girl you good because I can't for the moment. I'm sick of seeing being say how great it is and giving it 5 stars. "Oh it's one of the best books I've ever read." Smh... Brand naming would drive me mad. Like it doesn't think the reader can get it? It probably thinks readers need a reminder. Lol! Love Lynecia! She should be a Booktuber. :) We need to do another Buddy read. I'm reading The Housekeeper and the Professor for my book club meeting on Saturday. I've got too many things going at the moment - work, online writing course, and buddy reading 2 hunkers. No time to make videos for the moment. :( I need to read An Untamed State. I've been putting it off. Glad you'r back! Happy reading.....

+Brown Girl Reading Lynecia totally should be a booktuber! I abandoned American Psycho. It's just not for me. The movie Gone With the Wind was a big part of my childhood so that's part of the reason I wanted to read it. I'm going to follow it up with The Wind Done Gone if I can find a copy of it.

I also hate when people say read it for the time period it was written in. Imo only white people have the privilege of teaching the entire world to believe that it's ok to ignore the voices of the dissenters in every era to excuse and justify their bigotry, violence, greed, and crimes. No thank you! There has never been a time period where oppressed people felt like it was ok for them to be brutalized. They have always tried to push against it.

Mickey!! I love this idea!! Thank you for talking about the slavery issue in the book, I feel like Gone With the Wind has been all over book tube lately and people haven't really been mentioning that? It is frustrating. I am sure it is a good book, but I don't really think that is something you can ignore? I don't know...I haven't read it yet, so I am not sure. I hope you enjoy your reads, American Psycho is another one that I really want to get to but haven't...I fail at reading lately.

I can't do Gone With the Wind. I would just be to infuriated with blacks portrayal.

+booksnq Gone With the Wind is my grandmother's favorite movie. I've seen scenes from it all the time growing up. I'm really interested to see what the appeal of this book is and why so many people are willing to give it a pass on its racist nature.
