In this video I explain the commonly misdiagnosed steering issue. Many times the steering box will needlessly be replaced when in fact it is a binding Universal joint. I give a step by step procedure on the diagnosis and replacement of these joints.

Thank you for unselfishly sharing your insights and talents, young man. And linking the parts and tools for the necessary repair. I know it takes a lot of time, prep, and editing just to complete a piece like this. So, we all appreciate it. Good camera work and editing. You have a gift to teach comprehensively and an insight how to understand a non-tech would think. That is the sign of a tech who can think outside of the box. I can see you'll be a Master Tech and better. I'm not an auto technician but an HVAC contractor for 30 years. I love my (2) 06 Powerstrokes which I use (1)for work...a 2x4 utility body and (1) for play....a 4x4. Thanks again. Aloha. Keep doing what you love to do. It shows in your work.

You just saved this old man a lot of headache. Bought a 2000 F250 two months agos, pulled a 30' trailer from OK to AZ, wandering all the way. A bit of play in the steering, had that fixed; added the missing "stablizer', and still wandering around. One search found you and I can sleep tonight knowing that my mechanic will be checking this out. THANK YOU Grasshopper, (before your time).

Unquestionaly the best instructional video I've seen on youtube. No character acting or hype. I was impressed by the way you covered all of the possible headaches and continued to stress patience. The first lesson I imparted to my own kids; If it is difficult, getting angry will not make it easier. Think it through, keep your cool and work to figure out what YOU are not understanding. It's not personal to the truck, only to you. Truck don't care how mad you get. I have my maintenance crew performing 80% of our truck repairs in the shop now, saving thouands of dollars that will be put to better use; Newer/better tools/more repairs/maintenance for the same money. Well done!

Ford pickups have been wandering the roadways ever since they left the straight axle. I had a 1981 F-350 dually.Checked everything out, everything new, including the wheels and tires which were balanced. Tried a different set of tires, same thing, wandering all over. Even got pulled over by the Mo.State Highway Patrol and given a drunk test of which I passed. The officer drove that truck and said I was ok to go. It wandered with him driving it. My uncle worked at Ford and said that they all did it. A very solid truck with lots of H.P. but loved gasoline. 220miles and 88 gallons later I arrived. It had to go. Have not bought a Ford since.

I do appreciate you my friend. I was pulling my hair out, what's left of it, trying to diagnose the problem. With the truck in the air, I spent countless times grabbing the tire at 12 and 6, and 3 and 9 with no movement was very frustrating. Thanks very much for explaining the diagnosing portion of the problem. It's nice to know the 'why we're doing this' instead of just the 'what to do'. Intermittent problems are the worse ! Just wanted to say thank you for this video. It’s probably the best tutorial video I’ve seen on KZfaq. I was having this exact problem with my 2008 F350. Initially, I thought it was the steering box. But after thinking about it more, just couldn’t shake the feeling that it had to be something else. Ended up searching KZfaq, saw this video, and knew this had to be the solution. Did the test you suggested. Sure enough the wheel wouldn’t turn. Performed the u-joint replacement today. Went perfectly thanks to your video. Truck drives so much better now. Many, many thanks!

I usually clean them if they are very rusty. I have had a couple comments about this and have started looking into it more. I really appreciate the feedback. We all continue to learn every day. Thanks for watching!

I bet this is the reason sometimes I can’t turn at all until I start rolling and then it’ll finally loosens up and turns easy after a few feet

Its possible. Check out the joints and see what you find. If its not that I would consider a possible failed brake booster if its a diesel truck.

I just saw your video for the first time ever. Great job and great video. Simple and concise which is exactly the way I like it. I just did all this not long ago and I have to say you are good at explaining exactly how to do the job correctly. I will be watching more videos to see what else I can learn.

I just did this to my 99 Ram. Had steer wander on the road and a lot of clunking when hitting bumps and it’s a lot better now. My mechanic told me the U joints were completely shot in every way.

I have an 08 F350 that currently has off center wander and the old front rubber dust seals dangling off both sides just like you described. Had one shop tell me the front end looked and felt fine, and another one that wanted to throw a new steering box at it. Glad I found this video and glad I didn't have the steering box replaced. Will be checking my front u-joints first thing this weekend. Really well done video. Thanks!

@@InTheShop OOPS! I just deleted what I wrote because I was responding to the wrong article. Yep that would be me...the back woods hillbilly. LOL And yes I think this is gonna be a huge help/ But getting the tools you had in this video is another story. So I might have to be super creative when I do it, plus I'm disabled so if I start that project it's probably gonna be most of the summer getting done. LOL. You know how it goes...remove a bolt and rest an hour. Then remove another then rest another hour. It wouldn't be so bad if I could be drinking a beer with each rest I take. LOL Too funny. But seriously that IS the way I have to do things anymore. I just replaced the idler wheels and pulleys and serpentine belt on this truck. Took me all week to get it done but she runs really good now and I can trust it to go a little bit longer distance than before. so that makes me happy.
