Is Etsy Automatically Switching Your ADS ON??

I have been made aware by several clients that Etsy is automatically adding listings to ad campaigns without permission.
I have also seen several forum posts around the web saying the same thing.
Let me know in the comments if this is happening, or has happened to you, and what exactly happened.

YES, I had ads running on two items. While listing new, in the listing I marked not to add listing to adds. Listed 3 products. Went back in to change photos out and they were part of my ads. Now ads were for 5 products. I asked Starla Moore that didn't I get a new listings boost, why did they hit my adds. She didn't know. I stopped all ads, so I could list freely. This wasn't happening before.

I didn’t think it affected me when I watched this last week, but today I noticed yes ads turned on for all my recent listings! 😕

So about a week ago on my dashboard it had that message "you are one of the 3.5% sellers that could benefit even more from Etsy ads" and I ignored it for awhile and finally clicked on the notification to see what it said, and hoping it would go away. I read what it said and was about to exit when I noticed my ads were turned on, so I turned them back off. I'm suspicious that they turned on the moment I clicked their dashboard message about turning on Ads. Very deceptive if so.

It's in the new listing form, it asks if you want to advertise the listing and the toogle is set to yes automatically. Just turn it off when listing.

I just received an email titled 'Your Etsy ads campagne is on' without doing anything. It was at 1 dollar since 2 days and I didn't activate it myself. Very strange... Immediately paused it. 😮

Wow just checked and I had an ad running on one listing I didn't know about they charged me £85 for no sales it was a new listing looks like it is automatically turned on when you list a new item why do they do this ?

Yes, it's a really naughty way of doing things, basically if you have had ads on, or ads running they auto add the listing to ads.

Even though I specifically choose not to have new products added to the Etsy ads in the specific listing, it does it anyway.

I've never had Etsy Ads on. Ever. And yet, it turned every single one of my listings on! I got an email about it and was confused. I checked and sure enough, the toggle was on for the whole shop. Luckily, it had only been a couple of days. I turned them all off and haven't had an issue again (......yet lol)

Yes, I noticed this morning that Etsy charged me for Etsy Ads for July 2nd on all my 108 listings but I have never turned them on. I went into Etsy ads and they were turned on. Etsy ads are not currently in my budget so I wouldn't turn them on. I thought maybe I did it by accident but I'm glad to see it's not just me and I'm not going crazy. I'm paranoid now and keep checking to make sure they don't turn on again. Is there any point contacting Etsy to get my money back or do you think it's a waste of time, I've heard they're not very responsive or helpful.

I thought that it was where I had copied a listing that had etsy adds on it and it had copied Etsy adds on onto the new listing. dont think it has done it where the listing I have copied had not had etsy adds on, but I have no proof just my thoughts. hope this helps

Yes!! I keep thinking I’m accidentally turning them on! Every day I check, and all of a sudden I’m advertising tons of listings! I keep turning off the ones I don’t want to advertise, and the next day they’re on again!

Had to email customer support asking for refunds because I turn off specific search terms and they turned back on. Still waiting for customer services to get back to me.

When I had my Etsy ads turned on, my new listings automatically had the “include in Etsy Ad Campaign” enabled. When my Etsy adds were off, this was unchecked.

Yes that had happened to me. I had been advertising some products, but I thought I had turned them off. I used the chat on Etsy and told them and they looked at my store and said I still had the ad campaign on and I did not turn that off. I think what I had to do was put it on hold. Etsy hasn’t been advertising since then.

I havent been advertising but i have noticed when i post a new listing they turn ads on for that listing automatically. I've been using the new listing form.

Hi there, thanks for your comment. Other sellers have commented here that they have had to switch ads off manually, especially for new listings.

Not a comment but a question before you get started. If you copy a listing, change the title, rearrange the photos then re publish it does that count as a new listing? Also how often can you do that and do they ever challenge what you are doing?

Hello, I often see things I either forgot to put in the listings or need to change either prices or photos that might be off, once I do that, sometimes more than once in the same listing, I press update listing and never had an issue, so far so good. About the pricing, I'm not sure, but they might take 0.20cents each time I update it.

this has been going on for some months now, maybe even more(but it's been some 2 months maybe since i've noticed it). I sent them feedback, indicating that this might be a bug but of course I didn't get any feedback so that's that. But yes, I have ads turned on and every single new listing is included in the ad campaign and I have to manually turn it off if I don't want it there.

I realized that I would turn off ads for certain items and they would turn them back on the next day! I have to check them and adjust every day 😢

I'm a new shop (2.5 months) very few sales but recently I checked and a new listing had several sales. I thought it was bc it's a trendy topic but then I saw "Congrats on your first sale with offsite ads" so I went to read and it stated that Etsy will automatically do this for shops under a certain amount of sales and if I recall I read something about automatically doing so with another amount. It did say I had the option to turn it off but I have been getting a sale a day from it so I left it. However I think it's not very ethical to just turn on and do it.

I had a couple items still with ads, but after seeing your video I check and YES everything I up loaded in the last month or so had ads turned on. Before I had 2 or 3 and when I checked I had 15 items running ads. I guess need to check every time I list something.

What a fab tan Nick! I have noticed for a while that despite have Etsy ads switched off in the listing information, when publishing a new listing, it automatically lists as an Etsy ad. I then have to try and remember to switch them off (if I want to).

@@etsyconsultant Yes it does appear a bit underhanded. BUT I find way more annoying that custom orders move directly to completed at the moment... which makes tracking harder plus the facility to upload the finished digital product to Etsy is not available. I have reported this on numerous occasions to Etsy & they say it is a known fault but yet it persists! How hard can it be to fix this?!

Huh, so it wasn't me who accidentally turned it on. Etsy did it. Luckily I only lost a couple of bucks on the ads.

update on my earlier email. I went on the Etsy Chat aka the Etsy Bot and they state I turned on Etsy Ads on all my listings on July 2nd which I didn't. After some back and forth they have agreed to refund me the money and gave me a reference number in case it happens again as I told them I was concerned it would automatically turn on again. I'll be keeping a close eye on Etsy Ads setting and you all should too.

In my case it happens only with the new listings. I have to remember to turn it off straight after i published a new listing.

I just checked my shop and found several pieces that were listed as Ads and I know I didn't want them listed that way.

Yes, I had this happen many times with new listings. At that time my Etsy ads were ON. Every time I made sure that "Promote" tab was off on the listing, Etsy included that listing to ads anyway. Without letting me know, of course.
