Many dance teachers, concerned parents and health professionals are struggling with the amount of extreme over stretching they see going on in the dance world today, especially online. Every day we are seeing images of stretches that we know must be unsafe, however the students who to do them are also often performing at a high level and winning competitions.
Dance teachers who avoid over stretching and err on the side of caution, avoiding things such as over-splits in second often feel like they are being left behind, and face pressure from students and parents alike to "move with the times".
Instead, we need to 'move with the times' and start to apply all of the amazing information we have from current research and transform flexibility training habits of dancers and other performance artists world-wide.
I have kept quiet about this particular issue for some time because I have always tried to focus on the positive rather than criticise anyone else's training, but some of the things I have seen recently online are getting ridiculous.

Thank you! I swear you read my mind with your uploads!! I’ve been wondering about this for a week and was literally just trying to google and research safe stretching until I gave up but magically found your upload in my KZfaq subscriptions!

This applies to yoga and gymnastics as well! It's crazy what people want to do that's NOT natural for them. Be careful!

Do you have a link to the study about the hip ligament tearing in early life? I'm writing a book called Hypermobility on the Yoga Mat. It would be great to reference this directly.

Omg I’m overjoyed I’ve come across this - immediately like (love!) & subscribe! I’m not a dancer:)) I’m a massage therapist, doing my own “research” in stretching & flexibility for “normal” people (just everyday people, not ballet dancers, although I do have 1 former ballet dancer!). I find that most people believe that they need to stretch and be flexible, they take yoga classes, some are obsessed with “opening the hips”, pushing themselves into splits and lotus positions, damaging or even injuring themselves. I haven’t looked through your channel yet (will do today!!) but hopefully will find a ton of useful information which can help me and some of my clients too. Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏🤩🤗

This is very helpful! I know I am a good 3 years late but I started stretching this year and felt some pain in my joints in some of the stretches I do, good to know to stop doing those stretches now, thanks!

The Ligamentum teres is the name of the ligament you mention I believe. The question is who can stretch into the front splits and who shouldn't? How would I know if the ligament is there or being overstretched?

@@ianigleheart1774 In my opinion I would say reclined leg stretches are safe since you are controlling the stretch of the hamstrings.

@@TheBalletBlog-LisaHowell What do you think is the safest way to stretch for the front splits safely? Do you suggest to avoid it or is there a safe way to do it?
