Hi Lisa, when a dancer loses suddenly turnout and flexibility in one limb without apparent injury, what is the best approach? How do you tell if the issue needing to work on is in the anterior vs posterior region? This has happened to me to both my hips at two different time. The first one " unwinded" itself with no intervention after a 4-5 months, then a few months later the same issue happened to the other hip. Now it is " stuck" and has been so for a few years. Any thoughts?

Hi, could you please answer this question for me - If we walk naturally with our feet pointing more or less forwards and our knees and hips naturally follow this process - how is it good for people who do ballet to train and train for a ' turnout ' where their feet are pointing to the sides? Is this good for their ankle, knee and hip joints? I can see how dedicated dancers are, but wouldn't it be better for their bodies to dance in a natural position and not with their feet turned out at a 90 degree angle? I think it looks good but is it good for you? Thanks.

Turnout can be taught properly from a young age, so that it is not harmful to the body. Turnout is essential in ballet for aesthetics, flexibility, stability, safety, technique and beauty of line. Watch a modern dancer with no turnout, and you will notice the technique/choreography isn't anywhere close to the beauty of ballet. Also turnout is essential for ballet moves and safety. Imagine doing a changement without turnout. It is, in fact, impossible and dangerous to try.
