The last of my landscape photography vlogs from the Isle of Skye. In this one, I use my large format 4x5 camera and some Ilford HP5 film to photograph some rock details just a few yards from where we are staying in the village of Ord in the southern part of Skye.

Cracking shot. Wherever you point your camera in Skye you get compositions, other than the tourist shops.

in this day and age when you buy a new camera and its been replaced 6 months down with a new model its refreshing to see someone using old film camera's and taking the time to set everything up correctly and making great images, Just goes to show that you don't need all the bells and whistles to get great images well done Craig.

Thanks Ian, I shoot digital too mainly for my work and I do get GAS from time to time, but I do also like a bit of slow photography. I think it works well with landscape photography and being outside in calm and peaceful locations.

I can just repeat myself in thanking you for providing this kind of content. I'm waiting for my 4x5 camera to try it out myself. not sure of how to go about the development but nevertheless I'm eager to use that 180mm lens got to start out. I'm pretty sure I'll come back to any of your videos. Cheers, Magnus

Good Work! My young days I used a Wista 5x4. u did all Darkroom work with Deep tank developer & Devere 5x4 enlarger with Ilford Multigrade Head. It used to be hard work but a lot of enjoyment in very Creative B&W Images. Now I am 78 years young with some disabilities. I lived on the shore of Loch Fyne made few trips to the Isle of Skye. I wish you well.

Thank you tapas basu. The last time I darkroom printed 4x5 was as a student back in the 90s. At the moment, I have this hybrid system of shooting film and scanning it to add to my digital workflow. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll set up a wet darkroom and start printing again but for now, I’m enjoying getting use out of these old cameras. I love that area - very tempted to move up there.

Craig love the quality of your videos, your knowledgeable an delivery is just excellent, well done! May I make one suggestion? I think if you include the fact that you are using large format cameras in your titles, your videos will attract the amount of viewers they deserve (eg... Isle of Skye | Large Format | Ilford HP5). And PS I just love that dog!
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul, I'm glad you been enjoying my videos and that's good to hear from somebody that's doing great stuff themselves. I do try to add as much info into the title as possible especially when it comes to camera types/formats. I know that as the channel progresses, many are subbing for the film stuff. Like you, I shoot both digital and film so I have to make decisions about keeping it the same or going more film rather than digital. Whichever way it goes, you're right, at this stage I would like to get as many views as possible - these vlogs take a lot of time and effort to produce, so your advice is appreciated. And yes, I know that it's really Barney (my dog) that pulls in new subscribers ;-) Maybe I should put some dog references in the titles?

Since I'm from the United States, what are midges? Does your large format camera have more wider settings? You seem to use f32 with a slower shutter speed. Is there a reason or just preference?
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Basically, they are a small, flying, biting insect. www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/usfeatures/midges/index.html Yes, I can use apertures from f4.7 on that lens but I stop down to get a greater depth of field as this can very quite shallow using large format. Mostly use f11 and smaller for landscapes.

Nice shots Craig how do you develop the 4X5 negs? (Time and Temp) I think I am using the same tank as you, actually Steve Onions uses the same setup we have been in contact regarding stand development, I have been using it for 4X5 and 120 and it works very well I can give you the information if you would like, once again beautiful work and video regards Kevin
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, SP445 tank, Ilfotec DD-X (1+4) at 20degC for 9 mins. Agitate every 30secs. Haven’t used stand development but would be interested in your timings etc
@kevinflynn6306
@kevinflynn6306 5 жыл бұрын
OK Craig here is what I use in the same tank presoak for 4 or 5 min, I just use the water from the tap it is usually 62 to 65 degrees f then mix Rodinal 10ml to 1000ml (a liter of water). Dump the prewash add developer, gently agitate for 30sec then let the tank stand untouched for 30 min, then gentle agitation for 30 sec then let stand for 30 min untouched, then a couple of washes in water and fix the regular time. I never bother about temperature anymore with this method, as long as it is in the 60s f. You can use Kodak HC110 and you use 5ml from the bottle with a 1000ml of water, I use an hour with the HC110 some use 45 min with agitation at the beginning and at the 20min mark. If you get any bromide drag marks change the agitation method either more or less. I think I have got much better results with HC110 with the faster films. Rodinal seems to work better with slower films. You will get a fairly flat negative with very good shadow detail, and no burned out highlights so be sure you get good exposure in the shadows. Hope this helps give it a try and see what you think, shoot a test first and check the results. Kevin
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kevin, that's really helpful. I think it's worth doing some tests with one lot of regular development and another with stand dev. I'd be really interested to see the two negs side by side. Food for thought. Much appreciated. Cheers

@Dan-jg7zl
@Dan-jg7zl 3 жыл бұрын
Push it to 800 then. In large format grain isn't an issue. I only shoot hp5+ at 800 and even on MF. Pan F is great, but has it's downsides and far to slow for 4x5 and ideally you don't want to shoot PanF in bright sunlight. If you want more contrast and flexibility then go with FP4+. It has a huge latitude and gorgeous tone and character.
