My Jaguar X Type 2.5L V6 petrol manual was losing water and after sealing everything else it was looking like the head gasket was leaking. As it is a mammoth task to change the gaskets and involves taking the engine out of the car I thought I would give Steel Seal a go. For £26 plus £20 of new anti-freeze I fixed the leak! Update November 2022 - still running with no leaks after 6000 miles.

As a mechanic ,I was very dubious about this stuff. However my nephew wanted me to use it on his Honda Civic after he ran it short of water after a burst hose. He had continued driving it until the engine literally stopped . I told him it would be a waste of time and money , but did it anyway. 2 years later the car is still running.

About 1975 I'd has a 420 4.2L twin overhead cams' Jag... head gasket went, (VERY thin metal between bores!!!!), and was quoted something like £1,250, probably plus VAT, from a Jag dealer! I went around other garages and no one would touch it BECAUSE it was a Jag!!!! EVENTUALLY, I'd had enough of listening to crap so, went to the local library... got an amazing Jag manual... read through it and then, haha, took the head OFF!!!!! As a sparks I had my van to run around in... my neighbour was doing a house up, two doors' down from me, and I laid it all out on the bench! Couldn't initially, get the head off!!!!!!! My neighbour knew an old boy who came around to help. Pop the starter back on... put a few drops' of oil, in each cylinder... screw the plugs' back in, only a turn or so, (VERY important), he WARNED me it could go wrong!! Turned the engine over and, hahaha, it EXPLODED with oil everywhere!! BUT, the head was now OFF! Had to cut some of the head bolts' off with a junior hacksaw. New gasket etc cost me? £10! WHY did the other weak garages not do this... it was a lot of bolts and bit of work! I could do it, so should they! NEXT, haha, a 4.2L twin overhead cam's, (same engine as the 420!), Jag. XJ6... bought this the day my daughter was born... a year or so later... pop goes the head gasket, did the same again! DID YOU KNOW? In the tool box, in the boot of the car... there's a metal object the size of a credit card, with a protruding slot, in the half moon? You'll never see this in new cars' BUT, haha... it's for 'aligning' the twin overhead cams'!!!!!!!

Great video the effectiveness of this product in my Landrover Series 3 has been incredible I went with the total coolant flush out then only put the steel seal in with just water and had the vehicle running on idle with the bonnet down for over thirty minutes, did a sniff test and the colour stayed blue and she's been running happily for over eighteen months with no issues. I think people have bad results by having certain types of coolant still in the system and it hinders the effectiveness of the chemicals to get into the crack and harden under heat and pressure.

Thanks from Orlando Florida. Very informative video. I’m going to be doing this to my 2006 Chevy Silverado 1500 with V8 so I use 2 bottles. I’ve removed my upper and lower radiator hoses flushed everything out with my garden water hose. Also removed the thermostat and flushed everything out from the engine. Next I will fill with 2 bottles of Steel Seal and the rest with the proper mix of coolant and deionized water. Run it for 30 minutes to 1 hours. Let it cool down overnight. The next day top off more coolant if needed and hope for the best. Fingers crossed that mine will be permanent fix in the next 100+ miles like yours was also 👨🏼‍🔧😉

I was looking this process specifically for a Jaguar. I have a XJ8 which is very similar to this one. Thanks for the info, for the replies and updates on the progress. I still need to perform a few other things before go ahead with this. I'm replacing my leaky water pump, thermostat and a few hoses. But there is a thing. The symptoms were a huge cloud of thick white smoke when pressing the gas after a stop, it's not at all the times. I'm losing some oil, that's why I need to find out other possible causes. The funny thing is, I did the test using the blue fluid and did not turned yellow, it was blue all the time on multiple tests. But let's see.

It sounds more like an oil leak - maybe worn piston rings or valve seats. If it does not do it all the time I would just leave it. If the car is not high mileage it might be worth looking down the cylinders with a boroscope for scoring. You can buy one for 20 quid that runs off your phone. I have one made by Pancellent. Happy New Year.

Done that on my Lexus 2.2L diesel which had a leaking gasket as evidenced by the chemical test before the treatment. After treatment it was cured, I just drove it around the local roads for 20mins at low revs (didn;t want to put pressure on the new seal in the block). I then left it for 24 hrs after treatment. Top up coolant after treatment. Rechecked the chemical test and bingo it worked a treat. Ensure you do some diagnosis, checking fans, thermostat and obvious external hose leaks before you use the product.

Dear Steve and all, thank you very much for your posts. Most encouraging. Looking into purchasing the Steel Seal at first then another product is advertised Engine Seal claiming to fix head gaskets, cylinder heads and engine blocks. 100g more in size but recommending using half amount initially to check result. Engine Seal MCP Multi purpose. I don’t have jacks, stands and unfortunately I have a slanted drive at the house, I’m nervously planning to direct a local mechanic to carry out your clinical methods over these two brilliant videos. Please advise on the additional product and approach to Grease Monkies. T

Do not buy Engine Seal. It is a fake product. There are loads of reviews by people who have had their engines ruined by it. If you have a slanted drive that is wide enough park across it. You don't really need to jack the car up to let the water out. This is simple job that any mechanic can easily do. If they make a fuss about it - 'that's really hard to do mate' - find another one.

Great Video but I'm not clear on one step. When you put the new coolant mix back in, how long did you need to keep the engine on for, in order to top up the coolant to the full level (at 7min50sec)? ... Wouldn't starting the engine early like that begin to activate the steel seal. Thanks for your help
@johnnysevengun
@johnnysevengun 3 жыл бұрын
I only ran the engine for about a minute to circulate the water and make sure the levels were correct. You have to run the car up to operating temperature (which will depend on how cold it is outside) and then idle it for half an hour to fully activate the sealant.

Thanks for your reply. I'm getting lots of white soapy bubbles froth in my expansion tank. The garage said that combustion gases are getting into my coolant. They said that the I should replace my coolant first, then use Steel Seal like your video that I ordered from Amazon. Sadly, I cant get at the coolant drain screw on my Mazda5 2009. So, I need to locate a garage to replace the coolant for me, and then drive it back home, which will contaminate the coolant again. Disaster! Any advise would be most appreciated as the alternative is £1400+ ? Thanks
@johnnysevengun
@johnnysevengun 3 жыл бұрын
Seems the obvious thing to do is get the garage to put the Steel Seal in just before you drive it home. If you watch the Steel Seal video they actually show that you can activate the Steel Seal by driving the car at a moderate pace. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h96boKuF3sWznZ8.html

Hello, I have noticed that the instructions state that steel seal is not compatable with long life coolant yet the coolant you used from Halfords was long life concentrated coolant that you mixed to a 3:1 ratio.
