KTVU news footage from c1967 in San Francisco with reporter Gary E. Park featuring views of San Francisco rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin, performing their version of 'Down on Me' in an old warehouse and then sitting down for an interview. Peter Albin explains the origin of the band's name and Janis Joplin reflects on audience reactions to their performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Dave Getz, Sam Andrew, Albin and Joplin all go on to discuss the evolution of rock music and the band's specific influences. Joplin is asked to try and isolate what makes the local music scene so distinctive and points out how: "the thing that makes what they call the San Francisco music scene, as far as I'm concerned, is first of all the freedom to create here."
In May 2019 Movette Film Transfer of San Francisco remastered the camera original 16mm positive film elements used to produce these moving images in 2K resolution (2048x1556 pixels), using a Lasergraphics film scanner. Note that during this process, another 80 seconds of footage was discovered featuring the band playing 'Down on Me', which has never been seen before. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.

The kiss at the end with Sam is golden. "That's what we call love music, baby!" What a time to be alive.

I know that others will say it was the other way around, but Janis was lucky to get with a guy that hot.

Janis did that “what do you think, Sam?” with Sam responding by giving her a kiss in other filmed interviews I’ve seen on KZfaq.

I think it's the seaplane base on the Sausalito / Mill Valley line. During the late 60s the seaplane hanger served for rehearsals and some recording. Also, music people used to hang out there. John Lee Hooker told me about a drinking game they used to play there.

Janis shouldve stayed with big brother. Never really understood why she left them. I bet they wouldve evolved into a Heart sounding band

She left them because they weren't very good musicians. It was nothing more than that. She still loved all those guys. A lot of people agree with you though. She sang with better musicians after Big Brother, but none of them had the great FEEL she had with Big Brother. They had a great chemistry and vibe.

Would anybody give Taylor Swift the time of day if she behaved like Janis 50 years ago today? Janis Joplin made it possible for everyone who came after her. Debbie harry, madonna, Taylor swift, and all of you who never made it to the top

Freak Rock at its best. Tragedy that Janis decided to leave. Never as raw or good.
