I know this comment is a year old but A-FREAKING-MEN. When my grandfather was still alive we had some great EMTs and I’m very thankful for them but we had some AWFUL ones. Ones that rolled their eyes, discussed how inconvenient he was, dropped him down the brick steps outside our house while he was naked from the waist down because they didn’t feel like bringing the ramp out. Like with most careers - esp in the medical field - there’s some that are incredible and there are some that are just actual garbage. A career field does not show someone’s moral character

The tests are flawed and it’s foolish to go on shows like this, especially since they can just lie about the results, but it’s believable enough to me that they ask a whole bunch of questions and go by polygraph results. You’d probably have to sign stuff before going on the show so false results can be presented like facts, but a lot of people would probably agree to it just to go on tv or because they didn’t bother checking what they were agreeing to. It’s good to assume before going on any reality tv show that they will actively try to ruin your life.

I feel like saying that he thinks fat people are weak is actually worse than saying he’s repulsed by them. A fleeting feeling of repulsion can be purely emotional and not reflective of one’s beliefs or the way one thinks about people, whereas saying he thinks they’re weak and standing by that idea says a LOT about his ideologies. It’s so genuinely embarrassing that he works in the medical field and still thinks that the prevalence of obesity is a result of the personal failings of individuals.
@whatif3271
@whatif3271 2 жыл бұрын
I guess its because of his actual personal experiences in that field with fat people that think like that. Not every fat person is proactive, just like how not every person that struggles with something like cigarettes for example. I do understand that struggling with something like that is a battle, but at the same time, caring about someone and then seeing them be so apathetic towards their own health really sucks. I know every person struggling with that isn't apathetic but still, especially since he's probably seen people specifically like that.

Yeah. I have a problem bc i have that feeling of repulse towards fat people. I never think they are weak or think lesser of them. But I can't get rid of it no matter how hard I try. @thedestroyasystem

@@deismuarti have you talked to a therapist? I feel like the best way would be to discuss it with someone and find the root of the feeling to solve that within yourself. It’s good that you’re trying to improve though and can recognize your own faults, lots of people can’t (or won’t) do that.
@sharpeningtheaxe
@sharpeningtheaxe 2 жыл бұрын
@@deismuarti It sounds like you have some personal issues that relate to your disgust, and I know that those feelings are common for people with eating disorders. Getting over that type of repulsion takes time spent working through the underlying issues as well as mindful exposure to the triggering stimuli (eating, seeing certain body types, etc.) It’s usually most easily accomplished with the help of a good therapist. Over time you become desensitized and stop having those automatic emotional reactions. During the process, it’s important to not beat yourself up for having those involuntary reactions as this only serves to add more negative associations to the stimuli rather than remove them.
@smarchy8262

@@whatif3271 At the same time we don't know what he considers to be the lower end of "fat" we know in the example he used people who are 400, 500 lbs but he could think a person weighing 180lbs is "fat" for all we know or he may consider 300lbs+ "fat" we really don't know. The issues associated with being overweight can make it difficult to lose weight or can cost a lot of money even just to get the ball rolling. I think I would feel more understanding of the way he feels if he was a nurse or a home health aide. I think it is very difficult for people who are overweight and who are underweight to be able to work towards weight in the normal range because of things like costs, preexisting health problems, health issues caused by the weight or lack thereof, environment, etc., etc.

As an ex mormon, I think a big side effect for a lot of Mormon beliefs and practices is kinda hiding a lot about yourself and being ashamed about who you are, which I think is kind of a pipeline for worse behavior in a way? But at the same time it’s also perpetuating a facade of being super Uber truthful about everything, which means you have a lot of people in the religion who are “open books” but are actually hiding some insane shit, which makes a perfect contestant for this show

many of the people in the comments (and Jarvis himself) covered why fat people aren't weak, and I agree, but there's also confirmation bias in play. The majority of fat people don't require an EMT very often, if ever. The people who do are in some sort of medical distress. That sort of state really fucks with you emotionally and motivationally, not to mention whatever condition caused them to call could potentially be preventing them from excersising/standing for extended periods of time/getting to a supermarket, all things needed to care for yourself properly
@slavprinceuro
@slavprinceuro 2 жыл бұрын
Fr, there's a difference between the two and it really depends on a lot of different shit, even if there are a lot of people who gain weight and simply don't care to realize itll be bad for them and impossible to fix if not just them not having the motivation to fix their issues, but everyone *can* lose weight if they put the effort into it (and of course if they're not already too far into the weight gain)
@Emnms68
@Emnms68 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. My friend is an EMT firefighter and almost all of the calls he goes on as a firefighter relating to “fat” people are literally dubbed “lift assists” because the two paramedics cannot physically lift the person themselves and need more people to help move them. These cases are not people who can necessarily even move around, so their living conditions are almost always pretty abysmal. Recently he went on a call to help lift a 600+ lb hoarder who was wearing a t-shirt and nothing else. And that’s not even including whatever reason they called the EMTs in the first place, but if they were willing to do so without pants on, I imagine it would be something pretty unpleasant.

What's sad is that we can reason that EMTs have limited experience and only basic knowledge of how to keep people alive, so they could be bias due to ignorance, but doctors actually think this way too. My brother's wife has a genetic disorder that makes her bones and cartilage weak so she can't exercise, she's broken bones several times. Her mother was already diagnosed with it and she had the same symptoms, but her doctor said her health condition was likely due to her obesity and she should exercise. Her health declined. That's too much fat for her to handle. But then my grandma who is 5"0' has never been small and her normal weight is 150lbs (despite being 4' shorter than my mom) like it's a case by case basis. I still struggle with a binge eating disorder and food addiction, and it only got better during quarantine when I wasn’t really faced with other peoples Input or the feeling of shame that had caused me to restrict then binge and that forced me to turn to food as a coping mechanism. I feel like people rarely treat the non restrictive eating disorders as eating disorders in the same way, a lot of people just get upset and say it’s a lack of restraint or find ways to dehumanize you because of your weight. I was in third grade when I started being aware of my weight and sneaking food to eat because I didn’t want the shake of it, for the longest time I blamed myself but I was a child??? I'm plus size due to several reasons. I've struggled with intense depression on and off over the past few years and it impacted my physical health. I could barely get out of bed, I could barely eat, and what I could eat was junky comfort foods. Then my physical disability got worse and I needed a cane. Moving hurt, my legs would "shut down" and I literally could not move. I'm not my body. I want to lose weight and fat for health reasons, I want to get better, but it's so hard. The shame put on us worsens our mental health and can cause us to get even larger. Nothing is inherently wrong with being fat, it can cause health risks but there's so many reasons it happens. You can look at me and have no idea what I've gone through to get as big as I am. We need more compassion, not hatred, not pity.

A major part of losing weight/getting healthier, is mental and emotional. I wish more people have access to psychologists or therapists, along with a nutritionist. Junk food makes you feel good while you're eating it, but it makes you feel so much worse afterwards...I just feel lethargic and depressed, without any motivation to do anything else. My dad is a doctor and fatphobia in the medical field is SO real. Especially emergency medicine. ER doctors and EMTs/paramedics probably are more prone to fatphobia because they don’t have the time to get to know the patients or their story. All they see is someone who is classed as unhealthy by their training, and if they’re at the ER then they’re probably very ill. Ofc the illness isn’t always caused or related to the patient’s weight, but they are there to make a quick judgement. Unfortunately the judgement includes ‘this could’ve been prevented if you weren’t overweight’. I’m not saying it’s right but I think that may have something to do with it, in addition to all the fatphobic shit that’s literally taught to them at school and embedded in the medical system. Also emergency doctors see people at their absolute worst. The absolute lowest points. So it’s hard for them to not become callous. They also tend to have a distaste for drug addicts and the homeless for the same reasons. Doctors just need to see that it’s all systemic, but a lot of them judge patients individually and dont take into account their environment. Once again, not trying to justify this, just explain it as someone w firsthand experience.

Oh this is interesting! There’s actually a lot of terms in the medical industry to describe this type of behaviour, let’s call it fat biasing for now, basically it is very common for severely overweight patients to come in with weight related problems(obviously) this leads to medical professionals, whenever a patient with who’s overweight and has a problem that’s commonly related to the overweight physique of the patient, to quickly say the cause of the problem is obesity (this is mostly true) however due to the strict time constraints doctors are put under, like you put it, they give quick judgments. That isn’t a problem much mind you however if the doctor does not order any other forms of tests to see if the problem isn’t actually related to that it is usually because of fat biasing! However us medical professionals are obligated to urge you to take great care of yourself despite any mental illness or genetic problem, we do this to protect people and make people stronger and healthier!

Given that, it should be easy to plan how far you want to go on the show based on the questions you know are upcoming. It should also be easy to avoid losing money. thank you to you and your community for being so accepting when it comes to fat people. and thank you to the person in chat that pointed out that being fat is not a failing of morality. it can be really hard to deal with fatphobia constantly since it’s so ingrained in our culture, so thank you for that little refuge. i also wanted to say since i’ve seen some comments ragging on fat people who aren’t actively trying to change themselves, fat acceptance is not about having conditional acceptance. one’s proximity to thinness does not constitute their worth. if someone is content with staying the same weight or is actively gaining weight, either by choice or due to other factors, that doesn’t diminish their worth. people are allowed to live their lives, even if it is a life that you (the general “you”) think is unhealthy. so many people disguise their bigotry as a “concern for their health”. you are not them, you are not their doctor, and “being healthy” or not does not determine your worthiness to simply exist.

Wow, only took 5 questions for Aaron to have a full on heel turn After the mormonism question, I thought they were gonna ask like "Do you believe righteous black people will become white?" and then someone from the like naacp comes out to ask him if people of colour disgust him or some shit And not that I wanna defend the guy, especially since he didn't give these explanations, but some of the questions like "is nicole the prettiest girl you dated" and "did you give your phone number to a girl" really aren't that bad like, it's possible he found someone he's dated prettier but that doesn't mean nicole isn't or that he found the relationship with the pretty one fulfilling, he tried to get out of it but kinda just made it worse by only saying "but her personality is great". Same goes with the number; there's tons of reasons other than sex to give someone your phone number, even if it isn't for professional purposes, a guy and a girl can be friends platonically, it's a thing. Worst part tho is when the sister wanted to push the button on the "fondling a patient" one, basically implying she did believe he'd done it

Could be something they only try to tell you once your further in but I wouldn't know. Glad I got myself out of that at the point I did. I know pretty much everything is searchable online at this point but I really have no desire to look into the things they teach. It's really the entire structure of the church is they entice you to continue with the allure of 'secret' information. Members feel special like they're in on something that nobody else is. For anyone who is curious: medical professionals falsify reports ALL THE TIME. It's out only tool to give free services. It's one of the ways I can help a patient who needs x treatment that isn't covered by their insurance, or a way to completely see a patient for free. Especially with Medicare patients, who have very strict restrictions on treatments approved, and even stricter mandates on how long they can be seen (as in their total appointment length) to be considered covered under Medicare. Also they must be given strictly one on one care. Also they must make their appointments, and make so many appointments a week, or they get dropped. Is it wrong? Legally, yes, sure. Is it wrong morally? No, in fact I would argue it's the only moral way work in healthcare. Does it fucking suck and is it nerve racking for us doctors? Fucking or course it is, at any moment I'm toast from 100s of individual false reports. Would I dream of stopping? No, I consider it selfish to not do what I can for my patients just to secure my own peace of mind, or some false sense of superiority for upholding the rules and laws put forth by a broken system. I would feel much worse knowing I let a patient lose coverage for missing an appointment, coverage they NEED to continue getting physical therapy, treatments which allow them to maintain a semblance of a happy life despite their physical issues. The 85 year old that would become bedridden rapidly (which, studies show,, significantly increase their chances of dying from any number of issues while also making their life 100x more miserable) if they discontinued treatments deserves better from the American healthcare system, so of course I'm going to lie and say they were seen for a quick 15 minute visit instead of submitting a notice for a no show. I can always treat them 15 minutes longer on their next visit so I'm not defrauding anyone for services paid for yet unrendered (something I don't do, the immoral way to lie in this field), but lying on the report and claiming a cheaper treatment when in reality I gave them a super expensive (usually arbitrarily expensive, btw) treatment that is way more beneficial to the patient? Yeah, easy choice. Our healthcare is so fucking dogshit, but at least I personally can do what I can to make things better on an individual level for patients. And I won't ever feel bad for practicing this way, and I know I'm not the only one because it's a tactic I picked up on during clinical rotations in med school. EDIT: every other shady thing this dude talks about, like fat people or the weirdness around the sexual assault stuff, is not common for healthcare professionals, just wanna make it clear I'm only commenting in his favor on POSSIBLY why he falsified reports (hopefully the reason I explained is why he does). There is also the other possibility, that he is doing shady stuff like taking shortcuts, stealing, defrauding, etc.

I may have been a smokeshow when I was 120 lbs, but the second time I was definitely sick for a few years in college, so my aunt complimenting me on how thin I was was like a slap in the face. Apparently she’d thought I got past the trouble of keeping weight on. My “goal” was 125 lbs, and if I went under 115 lbs, I had to tell whoever I was with, so they could force me to eat. I had my gallbladder and appendix removed exactly 1 month apart, so that or the underlying issue messed with my digestion, and, at the time, my body was handling stress by loosing weight instead of putting it on.

5:55 yes "No, I don't." isn't the appropriate answer to "do you always wash your hands".. hopefully lol. It *should* be "there were a few times when.."

Manually running a 30 second ad will prevent the automatic ads from playing for 10 minutes. That stacks for up to an hour at a time. That's the only way to disable them afaik. You also have to have this option on in your settings for it to work.

I think this TV show would’ve been a lot better if they changed the money values, instead of going 10K, to 25 then 100, 200, 300 and 500. I think if they held off the 100K longer, having a 50k step, then 100k, then 250 and finally 500k. This would have both saved the show money AND it would’ve forced more people to go for higher money amounts, honestly it’s pretty easy to get to 100K and dip.

I think the thing with these shows is that polygraph tests are mostly bs so the producers just try to create as much drama as possible

yeah the fat shaming question’s definitely got to me. yeah i will admit in my past i have stress eaten and i’ve done all in my power to lose the weight off and be physically active, i actually enjoy working out, but my issue is i have pcos, which is a genetic disorder which will make it a lot harder to lose weight and have hormonal issues with your menstrual cycle and can make it harder for women to become pregnant. i have wanted to lose weight for so long but it’s been so difficult just to even approach that, i’ve worked in so many physical jobs and done keto dieting, but it’s a lot of physical strain, just to lose a few pounds. to fat shame and say we aren’t trying, just know there IS real disabilities and conditions that prevents us from losing it like the average person.

@@DiMagnolia I think it's relevant bc of Mormonism but the thing is most people don't know that, unlike the racism being common knowledge. I think it has more to do with his job/desired profession than anything else.
