How to replace the thermostat on a late model 4.0L I6 Jeep engine. This should be the same for the Wrangler, Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee.

A garden variety 1/4" socket will line up on bottom bolt without removing the fan belt. You will have pull it a slight bit to get a perfectly straight shot at bolt. Also, DO empty the radiator from the drain valve. I lost zero coolant when swapping in a new thermostat. Finally, WD-40 is your friend when dissolving residue from old gaskets!

Good video. I would be concerned having your beautiful Lab around that pan of antifreeze i have heard of dogs dying by lapping that stuff up. I have had a number of dogs and have two well trained dogs now but sometimes dogs can really surprise you and do the craziest things.

No need to remove the belt, also you should always stick a rag in the hole while you clean the old gasket off. That will keep you from getting pieces of the gasket and sealant in the engine.

Why didn't you drain the coolant before you removed the thermostat? Also, is removing the belt really necessary? Chilton's says to drain the coolant and doesn't mention removing the belt

(from personal experience) have something to colect it with at the bottom, coolant will come as you remove the hoses and the thermostat itself. belt is somewhat in the way of the lower bolt, dont have to remove the belt, up to the person (i didnt remove it). I didnt watch the video, needed for school assigment as a sourse. I changed thermostat on a jeep which was pure rust bucket and had to remove the housing to clean up everything.

how do you know you didnt put the thermostat in upside down or sideways?

It's always a good idea to note (or take a picture) of how the old part was installed, but if you forget a good rule of thumb is that the longer end (the side with the spring) faces towards the engine block. As long as you have that part correct, you're good. Since it is round, the orientation doesn't matter if it is correctly in the hole. Don't forget to install the new gasket before re-installing the thermostat housing.
