You can’t have legal residency on less than a thousand a month if applying for residency now in Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, or Panama. No legal residency, no medical care. Benevolent stereotypes are also very misleading. Once you have medical expenses, thing get crunchy. I qualified for legal residency in Nicaragua when the minimum was $600 a month and grandfathered in on that. Costs have been going up every year, and $1k now is sensible.

Keep in mind the exchange rate history the past few years: July 2014 /1 USD =~13 MXN, July 2015 = ~17 MXN, July 2016 = ~18 MXN, & at the beginning of 2017, Jan/ 1 USD = ~ 21 pesos. It's easier to live on a $1,000 now than a few years ago.

Evalina yes when you live in Mexico the amount of pesos you received from the US dollar goes up and down. Today it's approximately 17 pesos for one dollar. I remember at one time when it was 10 pesos for one US dollar.

In the U.S. your utilities are easily $100 to 400 per month. Property taxes are often 2-4k, car insurance 1-3k, home insur 1k, dr visits at least 100-200, eating out 7-25, class b rv can run you 80-150k, health insur 6-10k a year,. In Mexico my sister in law pays 5 a month for electricity, 10 for water, 100 for property taxes, no home insur (made of cement -not concerned with fires nor tornados) , you can often get taxis for 5-10, eating our from 2-12, dr visits from 3 to 30, car insurance for maybe 250 a year, you can rent a home from 100 to 1000 a month (of course there are much more expensive one available) and you can buy health insurance for 500 to 2k a year. I understand retirees can get into the seguro social- social security - health plan, which could be even less expensive. the small dr visits are best not to go to seguro social only the bigger things like operations.

No video can answer all questions - but you certainly cover a lot - recommend people subscribe and also view many of your videos to start piecing together a plan for themselves. I will be coming down to Ajijic on the 17th and staying for 5 weeks. Attending the Focus on Mexico seminar on retiring in Mexico and starting my plan to retire there over the next few years. Hope I run into in the street along the way to thank you for your generosity and helpful tips. Steve B

If they are truly living on $1000/month and paying $730/month rent, I cant't imagine they can do much with the remaining $290. This budget flies in the face of a video that I watched of yours just recently. Even if the rent included all utilities, internet and cable, the $290 has to pay for health insurance(or doctor's visits, prescriptions), if they have no insurance, groceries, household supplies, etc... It's great if they can do it.

Jerry Brown Travels Hi Jerry. I’ve been watching many of your videos plus some others, and I’m very interested in moving to that area of Mexico. Most of the videos I watch are relative to one’s income; retirement, Social Security etc. Anyone considering this, like myself, needs to be prepared and researching all the aspects is a must. I’m commenting here because I was really curious if the couple in this video is actually living on just 1k per month? They stated their rent was $730.00 so with that in mind, how are they able to afford actual day to day living expenses? I did notice that somewhere within the content of this video that they were living on 3k per month in the USA. Though their business is actually none of mine (Lol), I’m really just trying to figure out how I can live comfortably and “thrive” there while living on a retirement income. Thriving is my quest. I know for certain that I want to retire there, but being able to thrive and not just barely survive is important for me. I’m sure it’s important to most of the other retirees as well. Maybe you could find these individuals and possibly do a follow up interview to see how they are doing? Are they thriving and happy living on 1k per month between the two of them? Also, I will continue to watch your videos for more information related to retirement and how to live happy and simply. You and your wife seem like great people, very nice and caring...I really enjoy your vlogs and hope you both are happy and doing well. Thank you both so much for sharing! 😎🙃😊

Thank you Jerry and Lori for another fantastic video! Do you also live in Ajijic now? Do you rent or you bought a home? Do you live near the center? How did you find your home? The community where Wade and Barb live, are the utilities included? For someone that wants to visit for a week or so, are there places to stay for little money? I'm just concentrating in Mexico, that's where I want to move to. Your videos are right on, with very good information and fun to watch. I’m quite interested on the $1000 less apartment rent I assume utilities are included in the $730. .. however what about food and eating (outside once in a while) and of course medical insurance ? Maybe have them expound for clarity. Thanks Jerry . This interview sounds nice and one of your best ...

In recent years, some improvements have been made to help disabled people get-around more easily in public places, hotels, restaurants and some tourist attractions, and while progress is being made, you cannot expect to see accessibility levels like those in the US, Canada and western Europe.By planning your trip carefully, and staying at higher-end hotels or resorts (which are more recently built or refurbished with modern design and thus the architecture caters for accessibility), you will find that you will be able to better enjoy your visit Mexico.Planning Tips for Disabled Travelers to MexicoUse a Travel Agent: A good travel agent that specializes in Mexico will have local knowledge and local contacts and should be able to provide advice and recommendations based on your specific needs. If you have it in mind to visit certain places that interest you, ask your agent about these as the agent may also be able to make special arrangements for you.Airports are much more accessible than bus stations, so we recommend you fly to your destination, or as close as possible to it. Mexico’s Luxury buses may suit some low-mobility travelers.Choose modern or refurbished hotels/resorts: modern buildings have accessible designs, and this includes many of the newer resorts and hotels across Mexico. Modern beach-side resorts tend to be close to international airports which will make the connections to and from the airport easier and quicker.Taxis and airport transfers: You can use local taxis, or App-cab services where available, or airport transfer services (some airport transfer services may offer disabled access vehicles) although public transport in the form of local buses is inadequate for the disabled in Mexico.Car rental: If you plan to sight-see various places during your visit, consider renting a car locally so that you and your party can visit the places you want to see with the flexibility an independent car provides. Contact the car rental agency directly and ask them about the availability of vehicles featuring Adaptive Driving Devices like hand controls, left foot accelerators, spinner knobs, and pedal extenders; with advance notice they may be able to arrange these for you. Also speak with your travel agent about accessibility at the places you plan to visit (e.g. archaeology sites, theme parks) or call/email the places ahead of time to ask for guidance.Parking: Most public car parks in main towns and cities have at least one accessible car parking space, and usually several. Major shopping malls and supermarkets feature accessible car parking spaces in their lots now.Ask for Assistance: If you find yourself in a place that seems inaccessible (for example, it may appear that there is no elevator), don’t be afraid to ask for assistance. For example, there might be a service elevator that you could use, and helpful attitudes from staff can sometimes come up with improvised support solutions.

Are there any expat communities there? Can you please do an informative video for that city? I am considering more of a larger city... thank you! Keep up the good work on your videos. Having visited the area for a significant amount of time, there are two groups of expatriates, the well off who have homes closer to US standards dine out regularly etc and the folks who have to live on Social Security only and rent casitas and have part time jobs. Nothing is wrong with either lifestyle but be prepared. Live in the area for 6 months and see if it really is cheaper for you. Do you mind poorly maintained roads or medical care that can date back to the 40s. No heat or air conditioning in the home. Uneaven sidewalks. You have to sanitize your fresh foods. We loved the area but felt it would be impossible to age in the area without many concerns about mobility, medical care and safety.

FOR INVESTORS, the last twelve months statements of the financial institution, showing $80,000 us dollars as an average balance at the end of the month. Donald the best thing to do his contact a Mexican consulate in your area and ask them how much money you need as income to get a temporary or permanent visa. If you do not qualify you can get the tourist visa that is good for six months and you do not have to show any monthly income but you need to leave the country every six months and reapply. All you need to do is cross the border and come right back into Mexico. Donald we have new videos let me give you more information on Mexico every week as a subscriber.

I've lived in the US all my life (70+ years) and seen the quality of medical care go down as the costs increase exponentially. I pay $180 per month for medical insurance PLUS co-pays for doctor visits and prescriptions. With the hysteria over the opioid "epidemic", I've discovered that politicians, lawyers and law enforcement (the Drug Enforcement Administration) are making many of the medical decisions that were formerly made by my physicians. False statistics and bad decisions by foolish people have turned America into a Big Brother country, and Trump's crude encouragement of bigotry and racism has forced me to leave what has always been home. The more I hear about Ajijic, the better it sounds!

SORRY FOR THE ALL CAPS, NOT TRYING TO BE RUDE, JUST I;M A LITTLE BLIND...LOL! THE MAIN THING THAT IS IN MY MIND IS WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU COME DOWN WITH A MAJOR ILLNESS? YES, ANOTHER VIDEO SPOKE ABOUT BEING ABLE TO SEE DOCTORS AND GETTING LOW COST MEDICINE, BUT AGAIN WHAT ABOUT SOME OF THE MAJOR ILLNESSES THAT REQUIRE EXTENSIVE TREATMENT, HOSPITAL STAYS AND HIGH PRICED MEDICINES? THEN I GUESS WE COME BACK "RUNNING" TO THE STATES!....LOL! BUT YES, THESE VIDEOS ARE NICE AND PERKY BUT I GUESS IS ALL GOOD AS LONG AS YOU REMAIN HEALTHY N STRONG OR (UPON GETTING SENILE), HAVE THE MONEY TO AFFORD THEIR ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES, WHICH MIGHT BE CHEAPER THAN USA, BUT STILL MORE THAN WHAT YOUR AVERAGE PERSON GETS IN SOCIAL SECURITY INCOME.

I JUST GO, PURCHASE WHAT I NEED AND COME RIGHT BACK TO "THE SAFETY" OF SAN DIEGO (AND ITS CURRENT HEPATITIS A OUTBREAK!!). BUT THATS NEITHER HERE NOR THERE ....LOL! JUST FYI, WHEN I FIRST STARTED TO CONSIDER "RETIRING" TO MEXICO (NOT BORDER BUT INLAND) I LOOKED INTO GETTING SOME KIND OF MEXICAN ID (CAUSE LIKE I SAY I'VE BEEN HERE FOREVER) AND FOUND OUT FROM MEXICAN CONSULATE THAT THEY CANNOT GIVE ME ANY KIND OF ID BECAUSE I HAVE TO RECLAIM MY MEXICAN CITIZENSHIP FIRST!! WHICH REQUIRES ALL KINDS OF PAPER WORK (THAT I DONT EVEN HAVE ANYMORE) ONLY BECAUSE I BECAME A US CITIZEN BEFORE MEXICO MADE IT OK TO HAVE DUAL CITIZENSHIP!! WHICH I FIND VERY TYPICAL OF MEXICO TO "PULL" STUFF LIKE THIS! BTW...THEY HAVE NEW PROCEDURE AT BORDER (INTO MEXICO) WHERE MEXICANS JUST GO THRU AND ALL OTHERS HAVE TO FILL OUT A FORM AND GET LIKE A 90 DAY STAMP OR WHATEVER AND I WAS TOLD AT CONSULATE THAT IF I AM FOUND IN MEXICO SANS STAMP I WILL BE DEPORTED TO THE US!!...WHICH I FIND ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS BUT AGAIN...THAT'S "MY GOOD OL' MEXICO"!!
