I read it after the 2nd podcast. Hack was a grade A badass. He was the type of soldier I don't think our Military makes anymore. Bending and breaking rules in order to look after his men or get things done. It's unbelievable how much death and combat he saw in Korea alone.

I’m from the uk and I found this book in a second hand store in 1986 . Over the years I have read hundreds of military themed books from autobiography’s to personal accounts of battles and everything in between. I have kept every single book I have bought since I was sixteen but out of them all I keep coming back to two books in particular. I read them at least once a year and they still have the power to shake my head in awe . One is Eugine sledge with the old breed and the other is of course David Hackworth’s About Face . This book should be compulsory reading throughout all the military. It’s myTime to brush the dust off and read it again ..

I love how Sledge never intended to "write a book" but was chronicalling events in very unsentimental almost academic language that made the events he and his fellow Marines endured that much more horrific.

My father was fortunate enough to have contact via email with Colonel Hackworth during his tour in Al-Adhamiyah, Baghdad, Iraq from 2004 to 2005 when he learned of his death about a month after returning home it hit him pretty hard he said "hack was a soldier's soldier and one of the wittiest people he had ever spoken to"

The "C" in Type-C Field Ration doesn't stand for any word. It's more of like a grade, basically. Type A rations meant basically fresh food. Type B is packaged food but not in a ready-to-eat state. Type C is packaged, ready-to-eat, field expedient food. And then there were other emergency rations like the D-Bar were more for, "Hey I need something right now or I'm going to die." as opposed to simply daily dining requirements. As far as I can tell the K Ration is basically the same idea as the C Ration just older.
@workingguy6666
@workingguy6666 3 жыл бұрын
Canned sort of makes sense, though, as K rations were more 'kitchen' based, even if they were muddy field kitchens (from recollection).

Would a D-bar been a better choice for Hack, or was it just the pesky sniper that kept him from enjoying his frozen C ration?
@abortedlord
@abortedlord 3 жыл бұрын
@@tauceti8341 Apparently the D bar is just a block of "chocolate" that is just slightly more enjoyable to eat than say, a boiled potato, but slam packed with calories somehow. So it probably would've at least been simpler to get into his face, ya.

Very interesting, a blast from the past. When this book came out, I was a salty (per me) Lance Corporal. I read it again in the mid 90s when I was a Sergeant. I still have it somewhere. I did glean lessons from the Colonel that helped me as an nco. I remember disagreeing with his analysis that the Marines should not be separate service, however. History has shown the intact MCAGTF with its organic Marine support is much better than "jointness". He was quite the warrior, whether it was fighting with the Turks or the Wolfhound Raiders and led from the front. It's no wonder the polished and starred politicians in uniform had disdain for him, he reminded them of what they weren't.

Reading this book left me discouraged about the upper levels of our military and their deafness to the lessons learned by the men on the ground. However, listening to Jocko and Andy Stumpf on AS's podcast they described a military that is no longer like that. Hopefully the paper pushers and ticket punchers have been mostly flushed from the system.

I read about face because you talk about it so often. The only issue I have is he didn’t seem to have much humility. He brags often. You,Jocko, are way more humble considering Colonel Hackworth is such a huge influence on you and your leadership style. I found that surprising.

The funny thing about Hack's reputation is the inner circles is that they mainly come from Pentagon staffers and former General Officers, as well as those he criticized directly and tried to hold accountable - including leadership of those who prosecuted the wars on terror. Gen Abrams called him "The finest battalion commander I have ever seen". When a superman such as Abrams pays you a compliment like that - you know you are worth your weight in gold. But, Hack was no quack (he was called Hack the Quack) and only cared about one thing: Those under his command. And isn't it ironic? His book is required or recommended reading at West Point and is/was on the USMC Commandant's Reading List. And last, but not least, if anyone had a chance for Hack to be their company or battalion commander, especially today, those folks would jump at it while silently thanking Jesus Christ for him. I know I would.

I remember hearing that after the episode where Melfi recommends to Tony Soprano that he should look up Sun Tzu & read “Art of War”, sales increased by like 1100% & publishers had to reprint a shitload of copies to meet demand. Was in big papers, was huge on Wall Street, in DC, in pro sports, etc.

Frankly, it confuses me that people are irritated by singular downvotes. Rather, the lack of them should be concerning. It means either you are inconsequential or something seriously fishy is going on. (Assuming that lasts longer than an hour, otherwise the system likely hasn't propagated votes completely.) Also, no dislikes on my end at this point.
