Alot of things u missed.. 1. Love marriage vs arrange marriage. 2. Forcing a woman for a child(birth). 3. forcing a young girl among boys to serve food is the first priority than playing. 4.society forces to serve tea in a separate utensil to a maid. (caste system). 5.it is ryt to make fun of women (during male gossip). 6. Women should be multi tasking. (cooking/serving/managing child/etc) without hitting heat. 7. Women shold be choose family first than job. (n if she is working, she should also knw how to manage n cooking food (household). Yes its a very strong short story.

And if any woman does really like that she should be blamed by all including women, she would be treated as shame less lady. I am an Indian working Lady, I have to do everything, male domination is more since childhood, male children prior than female, but now things have been changing due to women education. Indian woman works like a ox to keep her family happy for no recognition. Infact what is shown in the film is nothing...

You didn't talk about the fact that it's been taught to girls from the very young age. The girl was asked to serve the boys. I am so proud of my parents for giving me right learning from my childhood. They used to make me do household activities and my dad always helped my mom with her work. I encourage everyone to not pass this discriminating attitude shown in the video to next generation. Child education is the most important thing in the life. It will stay with you forever. Strong message by this amazing short film.

My father actually was the one who used to cook at home. He taught my mom how to cook. My mom would go to office and father would stay at home, giving tuitions and raising me when I was a baby. The society judged him, the relatives, neighbours, didn't give him respect like other men. But I'm proud of what he did inspite of it being against the norms of society. When he got a job, and my mom stopped going for work, I saw the attitude shift of others towards him. It baffles me in a sad way.😔

@@smileitsbisma Things have changed in urban India itself. I'm talking about things 10-20 years back in semi urban towns. Now obviously, societies are becoming more and more aware and educated. The fact that some societies in the middle east and Africa still restrict women to even go for work, still bemuses me. But yeah, of course most of western developed countries Inc. Japan, Korea, Australia, are miles ahead in terms of gender equality.

Sampad Barik Sampad Barik I’m not putting India down at all but all I’m saying is that for white people or western society I’ve always seen more equality e.g husband washing dishes. Asian people around the world find it hard to move forward from the 1960s system. I know India has evolved but it has a long way to go in the sense that other countries already established such things before hand. My main point was that if your father and your family lived here no one would look down or belittle you you except Asian people from backminded backgrounds again. People mutually respect more people here.

My mum was so touched when she saw this film. She was like, I need to send this and show this to all my friends because this is like a snap shot of our lives portrayed exactly. You know what my dad said? He said very uncomfortably that “it’s okay. I think the husband should’ve helped her when she asked for the fan thing. I don’t know.” I can easily see my father as the husband in this story, not that my mother would ever have the courage to do what Shefali did. This is a story of most households. There are small details here that touch all kinds of nerves: 1. The tea not being served in the same crockery as others because if you remember in article 15, some people don’t consider treating the house helps the same as others. And you could see that Shefali didn’t want to make that discrimination, she asked for a cup. But the lady who discriminated gave her a steel glass instead. 2. the little girl who was playing was supposed to feel like it’s a privilege that she gets to play. Same thing evolves into “see I let my daughter/wife work till whenever I think is right.” This same girl was scolded when the boys played outside even though she wasn’t at fault. And it was her job to go serve food to the boys because she’s a girl. I completely agree with you. This is definitely one of the best short films ever made.

The same thing happens in my in-laws house. Me and my husband live abroad and when we are outside India, my husband does everything. But whenever we go to India to visit my parents in law, my husband becomes totally different . My husband, his brother and my father in law do not clean up after they eat their food. Always it's our ( my mother in law, me and my sister in law) job to clean up the bits and pieces of food that they have left in their plate. What surprises me is the fact that my husband also does the same thing when he's in India. But here in the UK, he behaves completely differently. This never happened in my parents' house. My father and brother always used to do household chores. So, I find it very unsettling.

@aninditabanerjee2420 4 жыл бұрын
No that is not. It has nothing to do with caste. As @Rimsi Das already pointed out - it is more of a status thing. I can confirm that a Brahmin cook working in a Brahmin household is also served tea in a separate cup set aside for her. And I'm pretty certain you will see the same treatment of an upper caste helper working for an affluent lower caste household.

happens everywhere and yes in USA also. USA in many ways has more disgusting treatment of women of any world I have ever been too. I have been living in the states for 13 years and yes it is quite evident in their society. Only place where women get equal treatment and respect is in tribal societies. You would think modern developed world be better for treatment but it's quite the opposite. Yes, they have become economically empowered but they don't have actual power. In terms of power dynamics (not economic) in the household, Indian women enjoys more than their western counterpart.

I hope hope hope... you don't judge all Indian men based on this short film... hope you don't judge arranged marriages based on this short film... I won't deny this reality... this happens in many many homes... but I have seen my own parents who did every chore in the house, who cared about each other, and supported each other... I was raised seeing those ideals... I live in your country now... I had an arranged marriage... and I cannot stress enough how beautiful it was to fall in love with the person going through the arranged process... now both me and my wife work here... both of us are independent, raising a child together and doing all the house chores together... and parties in our typical "Indian Hindu Arranged Marriage" home do not look like this.. I am proud of that! I do hope you do not form your opinions based on cinematic depictions!

Women of India are the primary reasons India is intact. Its women of India who make sure the families are running smoothly and they get over all challenges. My mother is taking over so many jobs and roles each day. She is as strong as anyone when it comes to protecting our interests and she is as soft as anyone could be. Most importantly my Mom (Maaji , as I call her) like other Indian women made sure we kids the best life values and never lose our path. The path of righteousness.

Understanding the little awkwardness with the tea. I notice you didn’t quite get it and it’s totally u understandable because once I explain you will be shocked.and disgusted. India has a caste/ class system. This isn’t some archaic , quaint system the only words to describe it is cruel and oppressive. The lady who refused the tea is the household maid. She would typically belong to a lower caste and definitely a lower class than her employers . Most house help are treated differently and separate crockery / cutlery is reserved for them as they are not considered equal enough to drink out of the good China. This is so ingrained in us that most people don’t even think about it let alone consider it discrimination. It’s demeaning with a thousand seemingly insignificant cuts and then we wonder why our society is so divisive and fucked up. The maid refused the tea because she knew that the guest had assumed she wouldn’t drink from a China cup and the employer ( shefali shah) was too embarrassed to speak up for her. Ironic that they don’t see how they are all oppressed but assume a superiority over the Maid. Women are our own greatest enemy in a patriarchal society.

My mother is kind and empathetic woman but even she can't envision a world in which she has to serve tea or food to the help in the same dish as the rest of us. It took quite a while to get her to stop segregating cutlery by class. I started my own protest against it by deliberately serving myself food in the same cutlery that was reserved for the help.

So glad this film was made and oscars won’t choose this kinda films because ofcourse there’s nothing in it to potray how poverty striken India is. Ladies need to take a note to stand up for their rights your daughters are watching you and Men need to note that your sons are watching you and eventually just be you in future so please teach them to be better humans.Thank you for reacting to this , you guys are awesome ❤️🙏🏽

No one is Independent in this world.. Why do people think housewives are dependent and only working ones are independent? Working womens are also dependent, they are can't go a day without their maid, they need nany/care taker or for their babies, food is made by the cook or ordered from outside. Infact Independent women depends on so many people than housewives. So we must stop underestimating housewives coz she doing thankless job without being paid for
