In this video, I'm taking you along as I go get my Toyota Tacoma Tune from a licensed KDMax tuner. I previously got the OVTune so this video is also a KDMax vs OVTune comparison.
Both tunes are super solid and I would definitely recommend a tacoma tune for any tacoma shifting issues. A tune is one of the most important 3rd gen tacoma mods for any tacoma that has lift, bigger tires, and any other heavy mods.

It’s worth it if you like the fast go with the highest tune. It cost the same just have to get used to the take off so responsive.

Really debating on getting the KDMAX here shortly. I do a lot of driving in traffic and have read a lot of people saying that it make traffic less jumpy with the shifts

100% it'll stay within the same 1-2 gears in traffic. Much smoother of a ride. However, you may want to get one of the lighter throttle settings because it can get a little sensitive/jumpy on the start

Went from kdmax to kdmax pro is a huge difference. Tip in throttle is so much better and easier to drive the truck with the most aggressive tune

I got the most aggressive one and takes awhile to get use to. When someone drives my truck they will mention it. When I floor it the thing will fly. I would put it up against muscle cars and wouldn’t think twice.

The KDMAX I’m not sure if you said in your videos but the tune comes in 3 or 4 tunes. Most people don’t get the highest fasted tune. Only a very very small amount get the fastest. The fastest tune takes awhile to get use to super quick response when you touch the peddle. As far as getting on it the thing will haul ass . I would put it up against muscle cars.

Correct. The tunes come with different levels of throttle response. Most people should go with light or ultra light.

If youre adding weight to your truck and want to get back to how your truck drove at a stock weight regearing and tuning is the way. A tune is great for shift points and as you said they get exaggerated as you add that weight. People looking for more power need to just suck up the cost and get a super charger. Its pricey but thats where an actual power increase is gonna come from. Great vid as always

Hi...I did not read all the comments so may be Q & A already. We all know the Tacoma likes to gear wander. Does the Tuner fix or improve that? I have the 2021 SR5, stock tires not loaded. Great videos by the way. Awesome explanations too.

Yes the main goal of the tune is to help with the shifting. Typically the tunes will help hold the gears a little longer to avoid shifting too much unnecessarily.

I have a 2018 Tacoma SR5, Stock, I get 21.7 MPG on average. I have Toyo 16" street tires for now, but want to lift the truck and get 30's. I wonder how much of a loss of mpg I'll get after that. Good vid.

Bigger tires for me was the biggest MPG loss. Went from getting 18/22 to getting 12/15 city/highway lol then the tune bumped me back up into that 18 range

I get 21+ mpg with a TRDOR with 30.6” tires when doing mostly highway driving driving to the mountains and back. You should be able to achieve 23+ on flat roads

You mentioned in another comment that you wouldn’t tune a stock truck. I’m stock and hate the truck on the highway when passing. Would you tune to fix that? I’m on the fence. I hate mashing the pedal to get it going when I need it.

If you think you need it, it's worth a shot. I just personally didn't see the transmission issues with the gear hunting until I was lifted, bigger tires, more weight, etc.

Hey bro I running stock on my 2020 trd sport. I'm about to get a 4'" lift with 285/75/r17 AT tires would you recommend the ov tune, kdmax or regear? I don't do any off-roading to mostly daily driving and commuting to work I'm just worried about my truck being slow and losing gas due to the new added weight that I'm putting on my tacoma

No matter what you do, your truck will be slower & get bad gas mileage with a lift and bigger wheels/tires. That said, a regear would help the most with both but it's expensive. Might be worth trying a tune first to see if it helps and if you need more, go for regear.

The dynamic radar cruise control (DRCC) unfortunately isn't affected and still shifts the same. However, I heard that it helps with normal cruise control, I just never tried it.

I usually drive on “ECT” button on with a stock Tacoma trd off road. What will be the difference with the tune. Etc vs tune. And also tune+ect what happens?

ECT button just holds the gear a little longer & makes throttle more touchy. Tune remaps the transmission shift points & power band completely. ECT button still has the same effect with the tune.

Probably won't notice as big of a difference but they do have tunes specifically for regeared trucks so I'd imagine it's still worthwhile.

I don't think the difference is significant enough to say one over the other. I preferred the drive of the OVTune but I feel like the KDMax got slightly better fuel mileage overall.

Your tuner should be able to flash the ECU or just update it without issue. No need to go back to the other tuner.

What is the difference between KDMAX tune vs. Sprint booster?

I have never heard of the Sprint booster but it sounds like a throttle response module. The KDMax actually updates the shift points and throttle response whereas those throttle response things just make the throttle less/more sensitive and don't actually fix the issue. Definitely worth the extra money to get tuned imo.

Stock with stock tires, yes. With bigger wheels/tires and more weight I was getting around 13-14mpg highway before the tune.

Stock EPA ratings are pretty accurate I’d say. No clue if KDMax would impact them at all, but I personally wouldn’t feel the need to tune a stock truck

Smoothness in a transmission isn't always a good thing, smoothness is more wear. The whole problem with stock tune is it holding you back, at least in a manual truck.

Meh my ValleyTune kicks the shit outta this. Not every tuner is money hungry like the KDMax guys either. Sad that the KDMax community it trying to destroy the tuning market from the inside just because there are a few more affordable options.
