@@OGFITNESS at 65 l can attest to this. When you're young you want to train fast and heavy, it just seems like it's the best way to train. It's all ego based training. But you don't realize the damage you are doing. When you're young, if you hurt yourself you tend to recover quickly and so you don't care all that much. But it will all come back when you get older and then you'll realize that you were training incorrectly.

It would be interesting to see more science on the effects of weight training on the joints. I'm skeptical there is anything inherent with kettlebell training that is worse than other forms of weight training regarding joint health. There are so many factors it's hard to know anything for certain.

@@derekathomson that can be part of it, but it's mainly the high reps. As muscles fatigue the load gets shifted more to joints, tendons and ligaments and you set yourself up for long term injury.

Yeah it's mostly high reps. I was training MMA for like 5 years when I was younger. I went from 25s to 65 or 62? Whatever the KG conversion is. I only weighed 140, 5'9. Everyone I know that was bigger doing the 50s to failure always got injured. You can't keep proper form as your stabilizer muscles fatigue. With a bar, you drop it, with a kettlebell you generally use momentum to go over that hump. Aka injury.

let's be real, you can't train in your 40's (or 30's) like you could in your 20's. You should not take advice from someone younger than you because they have a young person's body. Mr Maxwell saying that all raining but his style is ineffective and will damage you is.... not correct. I know more people with knee surgeries due to soccer than any other sport... so, all people should stop soccer to preserve their knees? Nah... Right training for the right person. Each and every time. trial and error.

Resistance training with barbells vs kettlebells. It just dawned on me what the argument is all about. It's like the medical profession ignoring the efficacy of the low-carb diet. If you treat diabetes with prescription drugs, that keeps you coming back to the doctor - for life. Low-carb really works to lower blood glucose to normal levels, and it's something the patient can do for himself/herself. After the patient is instructed on proper diet, the doctor is no longer need, and except in rare cases, the drugs are never needed. Barbell training requires you to keep coming to the gym, or you have to devote half of your garage to you barbell "home gym". Kettlebells require 1 square foot of space each and you never have to waste time traveling to the gym and standing in line waiting for equipment or a spotter. And there is never a gym fee.

Torn muscles with barbells from doing PRs. I never heard of that sort of injury with kettlebells. Every kettlebell instructor I've ever seen always warns against continuing with poor form after fatigue sets in. If you use kettlebells in a stupid way, you get stupid results. The same with any other weight system. I know lots of old men and women with joint problems who have NEVER picked up a kettlebell. What I have read, kettlebells will make your barbell lifts better. With kettlebells, you never hear such silliness as "leg day" or "chest day". Every kettlebell workout trains the whole body, and the moves prepare you for real world movements. If you begin developing some problem with stiffness or pain, drop back a bit and advance slowly.
@olwill1

Oh, yes, and I have never heard of anyone getting their throat crushed by a kettlebell like happens occasionally with the bench press. If the 'bell is more than you can handle, you simply twist your hand and step out of the way. Not so when you're flat on your back with that lethal bar directly over your throat.

i'm 46 yo with obisity. i practice kettlebells intensively for the last 2 years. kettlebells helped me a lot, and i havent any serious injuries. why? bc i learned good technic (i recommend on the sport style more than hard style). in addition i know my limits, and i work gradually towards my goals even it if takes time. in addition, lately i began to do long rests (inspiration from the book "Kettlebell axe" by pavel). i recommend every one on this sport, under the conditions of working like me: sport style, dont push yourself too much, and long rests. It's enjoyable, it makes me feel wonderful, it improves my obese, and i havent back pains etc. all this in the age of 46.

The important thing to take away here is that Steve isn't saying that kettlebells don't work, they do, he's admitted it himself multiple times. But what he's saying that certain methods of kettlebell training aren't sustainable and lead to wear and tear on the body. Does any person seriously think that swinging a heavy weight about for high reps, with all the contorting, momentum and spine twisting (especially one handed swings), isn't going to lead to unnecessary strain on certain areas on the body? I myself have seen people perform the most ridiculous movements with kettlebells; super heavy snatches and get ups, and high rep long-cycles, they just seem like they're asking for it. I personally think that light KBs are great for warm-ups (eg. Warm up, halos and 2h swings.) I always use KBs for presses, just because I like the external rotation the handle gives my shoulders, so I don't think they are totally useless. But I think you can get a for more effective and safe workout using bodyweight and barbells rather than kettlebells. I may be wrong, but it's just my two cents.

I think your mostly right brother, high velocity, endless reps, uneven loading, add in fatigue, something is gonna snaps and or get crushed, mainly your joints hahaha. The pb is when you’re young you dont feel your joints yet, which is a good thing, but because of that we do crazy shit and when we do feel out joints its too late, the damage is done. Main thing w these KB swings, they can hurt you spine, the MOST IMPORTANT THING is YOUR SPINE. Crazy to hear maybe to some people, but if we take the time to contemplate this, most peeps will arrive to the right conclusions.
