That is why Wing Chun is known as Chinese Boxing. All open or closed hand attacks are centered making it possible to eliminate an aggressor.

Chinese boxing doesnt mean to use just hands. It means to fight with no rules. To kick to punch to neck jab groin strike or eye gouge. There are no rules in a classic Chinese Box match, in other words Beimo.

MORE THAN EXCELLENT, This is how I have taught my students for years.....Against "Real Life "punches. Always had a problem with the traditional way Wing Chun teaches people to basically fight against "straight arm vertical punches"? Highly linear strikes that regular people don't throw. This is more like it, use the Wing Chun principles against "sloppy hooks" And deflect and control head against "sloppy takedowns" and you "will win a hundred Battles"😏.....This was good stuff.

You usually get hit quite fast if you start a fight with this ridiculous traditional guard. I am not from the 'school' wt doesn't work (a centerline concept just must work logically) but a proper boxer woud make 3 punches including a hook almost instantly. There is also not much difference really between a jab and a hook. There is if an oponent is close, but then, you just dont see a punch coming... My point is you dont have time to raise your arm to head because of your reaction time. Your blocking hand should already be there... And if this wt concept is expected to work, you must deflect a punch in such a way that you have time for trapping... I like sliding my blocking arm as close to elbow as possible rather than just deflecting in a boxing way. Hardly ever you can outpace a boxer with your steps and without a step forward you are too far away to do trappping. Legs are just too slow. You should make a step together with a block... Without trapping you dont do much of wt, just boxing. Good chance is you can do trapping when you manage to surprise oponent with instant defence and attack... That's said. It is not a good stuff on this video :) People dont fight like this any more...

I have a couple issues with the technique and the training methodology. Firstly the way you're doing these drills. Idk if it's just for the video but you're not actually trying to hit him in the head, it looks fast and hard but you're aiming for his arm so he doesn't actually need to block anything, if anything this would teach you to block too far out. Then there's the cross framing one, you the padholder is doing all the footwork to create the angle with your self trap thing while he's just standing still. You gotta make them use their movement to get angles on their own cos an opponent isnt going to do it for you in real life. I don't actually have too many issues with the techniques, you did a great job explaining why you did what you did at the end. Still I'd be worried about using that long guard if you've trained it the way you have, with a block like that you risk catching into the elbow and the punch getting through anyway and my concern is that if the aren't used to blocking shots properly that's what will happen. I did also question that punch but if you follow up straight after as you suggested then it makes sense. In a very wing chun way you aren't moving your head off the centre line which I find concerning. I will say I think this is more effective with an elbow, just head down hands high and smother the punch and simultaneously fire off an elbow, or maybe sneak in a cheeky headbutt. Though that needs to happen earlier.

Great technique and mindset for how to handle a fight in the street. Question: What about if your opponent is bigger than you, do you still use the same approach?
@jordan-kz3rx
@jordan-kz3rx 2 жыл бұрын
you need to focus on your balance and footwork because a larger opponent will go for headlock or grab your waist if you aren't fierce enough with your hand striking or miss. especially if you have planned to throw something like a counter cross but the opponent is out of your natural range. you will lunge and expose yourself to a grab. so i would shift focus away from the opponent's hands and more towards the limbs in general to try to evade him during or press him out of a powerful position. the student has very good balance when advancing forward and you need to do so with very destructive energy (the projection mentioned in the video) vs a larger opponent, it should be less technical in my opinion because it will be harder to jam their techniques than it would be facing someone of similar size. someone larger will usually instinctively know that wrestling will be to their advantage and won't be as interested in trading hand strikes like sparring with someone your own size, so if you have skilled and coordinated fists and plan on using that weapon, you have to notice the energy between your hand engagements and the opponents body position if you are in danger of getting tangled up and winding up in a choke or if the opponent is set towards dropping down and going for a takedown - in this video it is practiced that we are preparing for the opponents 1,2 hook hook but it might more likely be hook, grab or feint grab if you are the smaller fighter.

Also, Greg Nelson and Kevin Lee have several videos together on it. Lastly, the actor who plays the bad guy in the Ip Man 4 movie. I liked the way Mr. Lee demonstrated in the beginning of the video the haymakers beginning with the opponent's arms and fists dangling low to the sides of the torso. I didn't like the bulk of the alleged "haymaker" punches performed with a trained boxing guard. Those are sloppy hook punches. Some of those emulated thug punches I also, really didn't like because, they resembled "John Wayne" Hollywood stunt man punches As Mr. Lee indicated trained conventional boxing punching assailants are statistically improbable in low percentages occurring iin a street fight. The "simultaneous parry and hit" I partially liked but, believed the the hit should be directed slowly for safety in practice drills, to the opponent's windpipe and not the facial targets countering .an opponent's sucker punches

"sucker punch" is a term that used to mean you get hit with a cross without the set up jab. Because you shouldn't be allowing a cross to hit you without a set up. It's coming from the power hand. Now it means a punch that you DON'T see coming or even expect to happen. How do you defend something that you don't know is coming lol. You be aware of your surroundings, and hope and pray it doesn't knock you unconscious and that you can recover to possibly defend yourself. This should be called "how to defend against a drunk guy who telegraphs a wild haymaker."

@Francisco-eu8fs
@Francisco-eu8fs 2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure about this. First of all, you don't know the exact trajectory of the punch, so that block may or may not intercept it. Secondly, it may intercept it and still the force and momentum may cause it to hit your face. It's not like the block will necessarily stop the coming punch. If the other guy is stronger or if the punch is well thrown (even if not perfect in technical terms) you may get hit. Then you could be knocked out or stunned. Finally, the idea of attacking at the same time, means that you are moving towards the attack. Moving towards a big incoming punch. It does not look like a great idea to me.
@Francisco-eu8fs
@Francisco-eu8fs 2 жыл бұрын
A different thing would be to anticipate it, by reading the attacker's body language and be faster and strike first. But then you don't wait for the attacker's punch to be launched. If you want to do a block and protect yourself, you bend your arm and put your hand on your hear. That is much safer.
@Sifu-Myers
@Sifu-Myers 2 жыл бұрын
I mean you can't predict the trajectory or any punch but you still have to trai defense right? Obviously no drill covets every scenario but this is one of many I'd say. When it comes to the force/impact that's all depending on your structure and defense itself. And as for moving in well its better to move in and get clipped with his forearm or bicep than a fist. The force wouldn't be as much.
@Francisco-eu8fs
@Francisco-eu8fs 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sifu-Myers These punches are wild swings by definition. They are meant to surprise and knock out. It's a different situation from one in which both opponents are in a fighting stance. In terms of closing in the distance, it is a possibility, for instance going for a clinch. I don't necessarily advocate that, because then you are vulnerable to headbutts, but it's a possibility to interrupt the movement, if you can anticipate it. But what the video proposes is to remain in the striking distance, advancing slightly to strike the attacker while blocking. To me it's too risky, especially considering that this is the attackers best shot. He's not gonna follow up with another strike because it's too wild of a swing. He's gonna be off balance and open. So I think a counter would be a better option. But this is just my take and I respect other's views. One important thing is that you are confident in your skills and able to assess the situation (as long as the techniques you practice are realistic and have been tested).
@Sifu-Myers
@Sifu-Myers 2 жыл бұрын
@@Francisco-eu8fs well yes I'm not disagreeing there but in self defense terms you gotta be able to defend against them so you don't just loose. I think the goal is to just get the feeling for these types of punches because Wing Chun or not a trained fighter always throws better punches than a random person swinging. Well you have a point. I mean the only thing is if you don't move in you still should do some type of movement and it's risky either way but this is all assuming you can take advantage of this situation by catching them by surprise as well ass just finish the fight before they have much time to react. I'm sure most would agree blocking then striking as in two separate movements is a waste in terms of time usage. Yeah I agree to me it's just my opinion and you've got good points. Most of these drills aren't meant to be the only way to handle it kinda like self defense it's usually pretty open for change. I'm also open to others opinions. Oh yeah I agree with the testing also. I do like in this drill he's not doing it slow while he's definitely holding back some he's still coming at the guy fairly hard to give him some pressure.

well, if you want it that way. Muay Thai emphasizes on powerful strikes with their knees or elbows. They also make use of punching. If a person knew muay thai you will need to learn good distance control. Try not to get to close as you don't want to get into a clinch. Muay Thai is a stand up striking combat so If you can, try take the fight to the ground. making use of tackling, wrestling or joint locks. So in summary, keep good distance control, be careful of any knees, elbows and kicks and try take the fight to the ground.

The first move here is a core principle you learn right away. So it’s easily picked up, doesn’t require strength or high mobility. It’s a skill you wouldn’t lose in old age. Try to do TKD kicks at 90.

So let me get this straight, you are going to block my left hook with your right arm and counter at the same time with some kind of left jab which has no body weight behind it because you could not throw that shot with any footwork. And this makes sense because i dont have a working right arm. Honestly it would be really easy to counter this counter.

Yes, it's completely unrealistic. I kick boxed and learned WC and there are things you can do, but this isn't one of them. Anyone who's sparred with competent punchers knows that you can't reliably read whether it's a left hook, or a feint and a right cross, for example. Every time you get it wrong you'll get knocked out with this.

Lol! Boxing will prevail over haymaker better than wing chun. Notice that the haymaker will cock his strike? This is telegraphing intention. Boxing involves moving in and out, while wing chun fighter must stand close to his adversary. Fatal flaw of wing chun is not tucking in the jaw, guarded with shoulder, and hand guard is dropped too low.

Just a pointer, if you guys are trying to teach people to defend themselves from street attacks, you should do 80% sparring with a non wing chun practitioner. Just let some practitioner from any other art that employs those big clobbering attacks stand in for the practice of this scenario. Even just borrow a heavyset bouncer and pay him for a couple hours work. That is bad technique and could get someone hurt. First of all a weighty opponent throwing a full body haymaker and you are just sticking your arm out and thinking you are going to block the punch… its not happening. The punch is just going to push right through your arm and continue to its target. Do an experiment right now. Hold your arm out straight. Have a partner push on your arm with medium effort. Youll see you wont be able to stop them from moving your arm even though they aren’t using full force. No matter how hard you try to hold your arm straight, they can easily push it. Now imagine a large dude jacked up on adrenaline is throwing his whole body at you and you are just there with your arm straight. You are going to sleep. That punch is going to crumble your block and keep on sailing. Another fault. While you are blocking with an extended arm, you are simultaneously punching with the other arm. Nothing is guarding your head. You are now completely defenseless. Bad technique. If you are determined to block a haymaker, the best thing would just tucking your chin down and holding your arm up against your head with a bent elbow. But personally I would just avoid blocking something like that. Haymakers are hugely telegraphed. Use that opportunity to move closer and up against your opponents body where the punch will miss. From there I would shoot on them, but you being a wing chun practitioner that is a perfect opportunity to unload on their body mass.

But you are not hitting against his head but out against his arms in the air?!?.

Yeah and I guess ur mind thinks ten times the speed of normal humans so you can analyze all this in a fight. This isn't even muscle memory it's analysis that at full fight speed is impossible.

that is generally why my dad tells me that unless you are totally confident in yourself you are usually better off evading then analyse what's going on before making a counter move

@@justsomerandomguy7693 I'm not gonna lie because honesty is really important in life: I technically have no experience in wing Chun so take what you will out of my comment. Anyways, I agree completely. Here everything looks fancy and smooth but I doubt this wing Chun teacher or any of his students would be able to use it against a boxer. When you evade, you yourself are not in danger. When you counter, you yourself are in danger. The whole point of wing Chun lies behind speed. Not just speed of counterattack, but speed of evasion as well. Like a snake. Slithering in and out of range. Wing Chun cannot be used without effective evading moves. When the sequence of moves you are attempting to make don't work, you have to evade and quickly get out of range. The things this teacher showed are really unrealistic and a misrepresentation of wing Chun. There are many levels to wing Chun the first knowing how to evade. As you said, if you're not comfortable with analysing and countering, if you try it the opponent is just going to hurt you, especially if you use a style similar to boxing ad shown here. Make wing Chun more "MMA-like" does not in fact make it better. The next part, countering, is used along with evading. Counter. Evade. Counter. Evade. Counter counter. Evade. Counter, hit. Last step is hitting, the chain punch. Using boxing skills is ok too. But yeah. Basically, if you don't plan on training a lot of wing Chun with people who know what they're doing, where u have the chance to apply the wing Chun counters and evasion footwork, just don't do it cuz it's useless in that case.

I think that people often forget that even if you evade your opponents strike, they'll strike again. You are not obligated to make a counter move first thing. Often times people will sneak up on you and then attack, not challenge you to a fight. Remember more opportunities will come because your opponent will most likely want to continue the fight it's just that this time you will be ready. You will be more effective with a counter attack if you are ready for it.

Yeah no one uses mitts in an actual fight but he uses the mitt only because the guy on the left can hit him without punching him in the face

Dude, you can’t kill your partner. That’s why you have mitts. Try going to a professional MMA or boxing gym and try to convince them mitts are useless.
