Dr. David Minkoff has been a pioneer in health optimization for almost 3 decades, and his teachings on proper protein and amino acid intake has transformed many people’s lives. In this episode, Dr. Minkoff breaks down how he began his journey away from conventional medicine, how working with elite athletes illuminated his understanding of the finer lines between health and diseases, and why in modern life people are deficient in essential amino acids which are foundational for their health. He discussed how improper nutritional intake, gut dysbiosis, rampant antacid use have depleted our body of crucial amino acids. He discussed what would happen when you miss these essential amino acid in your diet, even if you are eating a high protein diet. He discusses how his product Perfect Amino can help people meet their essential amino acid needs easily and conveniently.

I am FLOORED. I have been doing lab work on my own independently from my doctor because my GP seems to refuse the idea that root causes are nutritional or hormonal despite my insistence to check these things rather than prescribing more anti depressants or pharmaceutical drugs. So I recently did lab work on amino acids and discovered I am EXTREMELY deficient!! I have all kinds of symptoms that fit the perimenopausal symptoms and they were improving with HRT, but then the symptoms started flaring up again (brain fog, fatigue, constant physical pain). Despite eating a very wholesome and protein rich diet, my tests show that my body is riddled by malnutrition!!!! Thank you for this very fascinating interview!

You are so welcome! Really glad to hear that you are taking your health into your own hands. Unfortunately so many mainstream doctors are far behind where science has taken us, and they are locked in in a disease-drug prescription model, which can do so much harm. Welcome to the new age of medicine:)

25:28 It’s always good having people on about health, and it’s a life learning journey. I have people half my age talking about something healthy that I discovered at their age and felt like it was the answer to their problems, but I just smile and say it’s one of the many pieces that you will discover. Advice: I know that we all love to hear our favorite speakers talk about a subject we are interested in, but use your critical thinking skills to question things when they say something off. When David says, “that plant proteins are inadequate” I question what he means. He also gives people a sense that it’s too hard to get what you need from food, and that he has a convenient(we all like convenience) and expensive solution to this problem. Plant protein is going straight to the source and yes most are incomplete proteins, but we eat a variety of foods to offset this. You should eat a variety of foods. The meats that people eat are from animals that eat plants for protein. His supplement that he sells on protein is from plants. Also, the body breaks down the protein into the amino acids and make protein on demand and can store or excrete certain amino acids. The comment on Zach Busch wasn’t warranted, because the same can be said for everybody. The body uses more or less amino acids depending on its demands, so he can’t know his all the time too. In the end people need to make the time to prepare organic foods to properly feed their bodies. The body is always trying to be in homeostasis, and just understand what it needs from you to do it. He still had good info, just be mindful of the knowledge you take in.
@JoyKongMD
@JoyKongMD Ай бұрын
I appreciate your sharing your thoughts. I absolutely agree with you that we all need to eat a variety of food, preferably organic. As to essential amino acids, Dr Minkoff is the one who tested a lot of his patients and discovered that most people are deficient in one or more of the amino acids which would would inevitably cause issue when it comes to giving the body what it needs to repair and thrive. I am sure there are people who have enough essential amino acids in the body, but it would be hard to know without testing. At our clinic we do micronutrient testing where we can uncover amino acid deficiencies. Again, thank you for putting a lot of thought into this and sharing your thoughts.

I believe it is about bioavailability. Just because a protein source has all the essential amino acids, it doesn't mean that the body is able to absorb and utilize it. The perfect amino supplement, on the other hand, supplies fully bioavailable essential amino acids.

In his explanation, he talks about the body's ability to utilize all the amino acids in proteins we consume from different food sources. For meat and fish etc, we are only able to utilize about 32% of the amino acid, and the excess will be turned into sugar or eventually deposited as fat by the body. Perfect amino's utilization rate is 99%.

Our digestive enzyme levels decline with age, as well as suboptimal microbiome composition all affect how we can able to digest protein and extract amino acids from the protein we consume. Also, the amino acjd composition may not be optimal as far as containing proper ratios of the essential amino acid so our body will not be able to utilize it efficiently and adequately to build proteins. This is why he's seeing such drastic recovery in athletes by consuming these essential amino acids, also recovery of patients suffering from various conditions.
