i like how you use the victim's name instead of the killers name in the title, people usually only remember the killers in true crime stuff so its just nice to see that you see the victim themselves.

I mean it’s good but the problem is she prefaces it’s with a title implying the victim is the killer. “Kids who Kill Kids: The Case of Alyssa Bustamante” is what the title should be if she’s going to have that “kids who kill kids” part. She can’t have it both ways. “Kids Killed by Kids: The Case of Elizabeth Olten” is what it should be to properly convey that Elizabeth was the victim not the killer to someone unfamiliar with Hailey.

I also want to say I’m extremely proud of the grandma for not trying to cover up or defend Alyssa. Saying Alyssa should be allowed out of prison the day Elizabeth is out of her grave is kind of refreshing to hear. You wouldn’t believe how many people will know about the crimes their kids/grand kids commit and try to cover them up just because it’s family… I personally feel since Alyssa took a life she should be given life in prison. I definitely don’t like the idea she’s allowed to roam free in 2 years in the state that I am in. I don’t want to bump into her 😤😭😡

For someone that ended up being found to have onset bipolar disorder though, Prozac probably wasn’t the best move, antidepressants only treat the depressive cycle and do nothing for the hypomania/mania cycles. Personally I got put on Zoloft and had my dosage increased from 50mg to 100mg at 19 and that triggered my first full blown manic episode. Now being 22 and on 25mg of seroquel and soon to be 25mg of lamictal, pretty much all of my symptoms are completely docile. I have bipolar 1 w/psychotic affects though, no idea what type of bipolar Alissa ended up being Dx’d with but all of the friends I’ve had on Prozac due to misdiagnosis (a lot of us were Dx as MDD and then once on antidepressants had our first manic or hypomanic episodes). I’ve never killed someone due to mania though. I have done a lot of impulsive and reckless shit during mania, but never killed someone. It does affect my anger and irritability quite a bit.

26:44 "It was written in blood" is an emo/metal song from 2008. I believe it's about the death of a friend or a suicide. A lot of the "red flags" she showed, eg. the fake blood she wore, her hand in a gun motion, some writing on the walls, the KZfaq bio, the excessive cutting and carving on her skin was sadly just what the emo culture glorified on the internet. Not excusing what she did of course, just giving some context to the culture she seemed to be a part of and not everything I mentioned above was due to complete mental instability. I was part of that same twitter and tumblr emo culture at her age and have an understanding of it. Again, I'm not saying what she did to others was valid or okay.

I think teaching kids to establish their boundaries and about consent, especially outside of sexual situations, would probably help. If they have a friend who disregards their boundaries and tries to get them to do things they aren't comfortable with, they'll know that person doesn't respect them and doesn't have their best interest at heart.

Psych NP here. We treat a lot of kids, and let me just say something about watching true crime, reading violent stories, or playing violent games. Most kids can and will grow up with these things and never ever do anything like this. However, I’ve treated kids with psychiatric disorders such as Oppositional Defiance Disorder, and Conduct Disorder. This usually begins way before exposure to these things, but it can exacerbate the condition. So to blame games, books, or shows that are criminal or violent for 99% of kids changing their behavior or actions is wrong. Also, the medication is not a lot for a kid. We do not use height/weight for that medication. I agree her childhood was horrible, and the system failed her horribly. But all the signs were there, and truly this could be prevented.

I think Alyssa's more memorable based on how fascinating she is. It's just bizarre because we try blaming people for things based on our own moral values, not grasping that not everyone has the same morals and feelings as us. It shows the difference normal people have from neurodivergent people. Sometimes, we can't understand people just...CAN'T feel the same way, which is why we can never help those people safely. People can't understand that not everyone feels the same sense of morality and strong justice. We can't understand that they just can't FEEL it. It's crazy and fascinating to think about, honestly.

@@unexpected320 Have you not studied psychology? Neurotypical people might not grasp this, but in some cases (I was going to say "rare" but it's more common now due to the population among other factors) there are people who cannot feel certain "normal" emotions. Some of these people simply *can't* understand moral ideologies or even feel remorse. You and I can sit there and judge that but there's really nothing we can DO about it. I've just learned to accept it. It's one of those things we can't fix. But we shouldn't be afraid because it's rarer for people to act out on their thoughts. A lot of people who have these types of violent thoughts probably won't act on them because it's easier to try and follow societal norms than to get into trouble. I've studied this myself but I've also talked to a psychologist about this topic off-handedly as well as read about this from an article written by someone who has such thoughts. They simply *can't* feel empathy and we can't make them to, we can only monitor them.

A lot of the time, when a child is traumatized so far, it reaches a point where the child has trouble feeling sympathy and becomes violent, which is what I think happened in Alyssa’s case- absolutely not excusing anything that she did but it’s extremely important to not neglect a child because things like this can happen

I have been waiting for someone to make a video about this!!! Alyssa lived in my hometown Hollister before moving to Missouri and went to a small rural school with all my friends. My friend’s mom who was a teacher there told me she was like a “stray cat” and felt really bad for her home life situation. From what my friends said, she was very odd and always alone. My friend has lots of picture albums and in one of them on his birthday, Alyssa was in some of the pictures. Very eerie!!! We were sophomores in high school when we found out what Alyssa did. So tragic 😢 we were all so nervous when we heard her sentencing because at the time, there was a possibility she would be transported back to California. Don’t know whatever happened to that

Every single child in this story (including Alyssa) was failed. Alyssa was showing so many signs that she was a danger to herself and others. Obviously Alyssa and Emma's parents were abusive and neglectful, but even after they escaped that situation and were with their grandparents they were still being neglected just not as obviously. Yes she was getting some help but she should have been committed and they shouldn't have allowed the kids to be alone with her without adult supervision. This isn't just an evil teen; this was massively preventable. I understand you can do everything right in these situations and still fail, but to me it sounds like Alyssa had way too much freedom to abuse her siblings which failed them and then ultimately Elizabeth too, but she was also being failed because she needed help too. This is such a sad story. I hope Alyssa has changed as a person in prison and I hope Emma and the brother are okay now and they've all healed. I find it hard to comprehend in my brain how to feel about Alyssa because normally I find it easy to symphasise with killers pasts if they did experience trauma while also hating what they did and feeling no sympathy for the killing of that present, but in this case it's so interlocked it's hard for me to comprehend it all. Like how should I feel about her? I literally cried at the description of Elizabeth's funeral. It sounded very bitter sweet and I'm glad she had that princess send off at least

Before I make the rest of my comment, let me just say I'm in no way suggesting she's not responsible for her actions, but listening to details about her childhood reminds me of my daughter's partner's son. He's 5 now, & before his father got custody of him, he was living with his mother, who is an active drug addict, who still shows no signs of getting sober, with parents that are very enabling. When his father got custody & he moved in with them, & my daughter's previous 2 children, there were SO MANY things to fix. His eyes didn't work properly, he couldn't speak very well, he struggled with food behaviors, he was terrified of the bath & we eventually learned he had almost drowned, he was very inward & quiet & traumatized, & its take more than a year to really address the issues, but now he's like a "normal" child, he plays, he talks, he learns, he goes to school, & we're starting to see some great things like his apptitude for computers & technology or his creativity with Legos. As the couselor also commented, meds don't fix mental health problems, they can help, but MUST be combined with additional therapies & tools. I also had a hard childhood, I also was filled with rage, I would hunt & kill frogs sometimes, there are several details like that, that make me wonder if I hadn't been lucky in the peopleI met, would I have fallen into a pit of anger, that got so bad I started hunting people? I feel bad for the victim, her family, the community, but I also feel bad for her.

Nobody who shows signs or early symptoms of bipolar disorder should ever be put on an antidepressant or SSRI. They make things 1000 times worse, and I’m not surprised at all to hear how it escalated Alyssa got. Of course not to the same extreme, but I was put on an SSRI at 14 as someone with bipolar disorder and I had to be hospitalized two times for self harm ideation. It is absolutely ridiculous to put anybody on an SSRI without being checked for possible mood disorders, because these anti-depressants are detrimental to those with any sort of bipolar.

So many adults are put on the wrong meds because to them their manic symptoms aren’t an issue, so they don’t get brought up, so they only talk about their depression and get put on SSRI’s. It’s ridiculous how little society cares about this

she should never get out of prison. i don't think she's sorry about what she did, either. lots of people go through abuse as kids; they don't all end up committing murder. there's no excuse for what she did. she should stay in prison for the rest of her days.

I was locked up in residential for 3 years after several hospitilizations due to consuming lethal things (full bottle of tylenol, rubbing alcohol, bleach), self harming, burning, carving words into my skin, biting myself, scratching myself, etc. I also grew up fairly neglected, was diagnosed with BPD, PTSD, and depression after experimenting with antidepressants and self harming for quite some time and then attempted suicide thru rubbing alcohol & tylenol. I understand alot of what alyssa has been through, except for the harm she caused upon other people. I have had outbursts and harmed people, but the one difference seems to be psychopathic/ apathetic traits, actively searching ways to cause harm onto others for enjoyment whereas I would never hurt someone on purpose for fun. Just by being triggered deeply, especially when it catches me off guard and I have no time to regulate. All in all, i think there is a chance that if she had been given more attention and proper medication, therapy, time, and love, all of these horrible things might have been able to be avoided.. this is so sad to hear because I resonate so deeply with her. I feel like I've lived through her experiences and it makes me wonder what happened to me to prevent the same fate from occurring in my life. I'm 21 now, medicated and stable, and my life is honestly pretty amazing now. I wonder what hers would have been like if she had gotten any kind of semi-permanent help and thourough attention.

Alyssa’s legal team trying to make a case for her increased prozac prescription as lowering her inhibitions made me think of another KZfaqr that I sometimes watch. They had been prescribed Paxil, another type of SSRI, when they were just a teenager and it, in their own phrasing, sent them psychotic, and they did some really horrific things (self-injurious).

This happened in my hometown and I remember it very clearly. It was a very sad and weird time for our area of Missouri. I feel like this story wasn’t covered enough as I was growing up.
