I say this every time I hear this story covered. Wtf was wrong with her adoptive parents? 18 or not, they could have provided proof of blood relation to any court and no one would have performed a legal marriage for them. I realize that's only half the issue, but my God. Makes me glad I grew up with parents that were like "no that's fucking stupid" when I wanted to do stupid shit as an 18 year old rather than let me do what I wanted because you know, 18 is an adult. This whole thing is bananas and 3 innocent people died because of it.

If her & Katie were speaking on FB all the time, she must’ve known that Katie loved taking care of strays. How could she have ever thought leaving her alone with Steven was a good idea? @@oppaloopa3698so obviously the concept of abusive relationships went over your head. Just because they stay in the abusive relationship, doesn’t mean they themselves are abusive and don’t care about the kids. If you listened to the beginning of the story, Alyssa couldn’t just leave because she cut everyone and is living in an entirely different state. I don’t know if you live on Earth, but here, it’s not easy to just up and leave, you need money out of everything and unfortunately, they don’t give that shit out for free. What choices did Alyssa have? Just go to a women’s shelter? And then what, have her husband come and find her, possibly make up a story on how she kidnapped their daughter and the shelter believe him? A lot can go wrong if she were to just leave, you see Katie filed for divorce from him and he killed their son, later her and her adoptive dad. Imagine if Alyssa left with Katie. Both dead. You make it sound so simple to just leave, it’s not that simple for everyone.

any one who wants to find their biological parents should do so with a lot of caution in mind. most kids aren't put up for adoption for any good reasons. that is, usually there's some pretty bad circumstances surrounding why a child is put up for adoption, ranging from the mother being too young and unable to care for her child on her own to the mother being in an out-right abusive or other wise totally messed up situation. those who were adopted really have to keep this in mind. if you want to connect with your biological parents or family, before you go introducing your self to them, whether over the internet or in person, DO YOUR RESEARCH. find out all you can about them first; go to the local police, find any and all records of them, find out if they were in prison, if they have a history of drug abuse, if they were accused of committing crimes, etc. know who they are BEFORE you go meeting with them. and if you MUST see them in person, do NOT tell them who you are until you're sure they're decent people. just become part of the local scene, and acquaint your self with them. make friends with them. but do NOT tell them who you are specifically until you're absolutely sure they're normal. and if some thing about them seems off, or if they seem a little weird, just pack up and go back home, with OUT telling them who you really are. and also -- what ever you do, do NOT go moving in with them. stay at a hotel or some thing.

As a survivor of a DV relationship. You dont go into the relationship knowing they will be abusive. They are sweet in the beginning than they start to show their true colors. When you noticed things arent how it use to be in the beginning its already too late to "leave". My ex DV partner would show up to my house early in the day or late in the night if i were to leave the relationship. There was always a threat, its not easy to leave. They would often use the unalive card. There is a lot to it, more than most survivors would share from ptsd.

Yes! Early on I thought it was sweet that he wanted to be with me so bad that he would show up to my house holding a paper that said “please don’t break up with me.” Then after about ten times of doing this, it escalated to him crawling through my window and choking me until I was unconscious. If only I knew what he was capable of but it’s hard to recognize abuse when you’ve never experienced it before. You see things in the media and think “that will never be me” until it is you.

Sorry for thinking women are responsible for their actions and should allow men to murder their babies lol. Also lmao she literally did know what he was capable of and chose to stay with him and give him more victims. She could’ve ran. She could’ve sent all the children away. It feels like both Alyssa and Katie were failed by everyone around them. Why didn’t Alyssa’s family report her as kidnapped (as that’s what it would legally be considered… Alyssa was a minor, below the age of consent in both Texas and New York, and she was taken across state lines.) Why didn’t they alert anyone that their daughter was a victim of stat rape? And for Katie, she got out (I’m curious as to how, as you normally have to have both parents sign their rights away but maybe Steven willingly did since he was so annoyed by baby Katie) and then got pulled back in. Alyssa should’ve travelled to HER, not the other way around, knowing how Steven was. I also don’t get how she felt okay with the idea of Katie living with them, given Steven tried to kill her and Alyssa was almost never home… Also, the police really fucked up. Yes, Katie was legally an adult, but barely and Steven was her father; they should’ve been able to see that there was power and manipulation at play, thus should’ve protected Katie. I agree with Alyssa that Bennet shouldn’t have been left in Steven’s mom’s care. Not only does it give Steven the opportunity to see his child bred of incest, but Grace was literally at the wedding… she was an accomplice to incest. Not saying she should’ve faced charges (the woman was 72..), but she shouldn’t have gotten custody of her grandson/great grandson. This has to be one of the most fucked up cases I’ve ever heard about.

wtf how on EARTH were her adopted parents okay with their marriage?? there's no fucking excuse because they could have gone to the police and told them that they lied on their certificates and try to get a court ordered dna test to prove they're related. every adult in Katie's life absolutely failed her and led her down the path to being abused and becoming an abuser herself. I know technically Katie was an adult when this all started happening but mentally at 18 you're still in that fresh out of high school mind set and have little to know knowledge of how the real world works and what people are truly capable of, and most likely have no idea for what red flags to look for or how to realize someone is grooming/gaslighting you, and THEN on top of that her adoptive parents are giving the okay to marry him so even though she at least knows the basic law of "incest is wrong" her family being ok with it probably further convinced her of the lie she was probably being told of "its okay for us to do it because our love is real" or some other bs. Like how are you supposed to come to a realization that the situation you're in is fucked up if everyone around you acts like it isnt? Also not surprised they had a lot of local support for their relationship North Carolina and a lot of other southern states are still grossly okay with incest like I know people like to make jokes about incest being common in the south but unfortunately those jokes didn't just come from nowhere

I saw a true crime video on a popular channel where this woman literally bashed katie's mom for staying and it was just so much victim blaming going on in the video that i turned it off and I couldn't finish the video and never knew how it ended. thank you for handling this with so much care

There is a phenomenon on with people who have been adopted tend to create romantic relationships with their biological family once they are reunited. This is particularly observed between separated siblings. It is very strange, but there’s a lot of reasons why this happens, but ultimately because they long for a connection so much the blur the lines between familial and romantic

What a dumb statement. She was only 14 years old, she was a child, he groomed her. You are one of these typical people who accuse the victim. 🤦‍♀️

This is the most gross, horrible , discussing case I’ve ever heard involving 2 different families , who are not so bright, stupid decisions that cost their lives, very dumb on both parts, the only innocent people are the 2 daughters !!

I'm so glad you I found you. You have great content and your voice is soothing without any vocal fry. I'd even go so far as to say you've had elocution lessons. Truly beautiful. I'm 53 studied forensics and have been obsessed with true crime since I was15. If you have any old cases and can't find something I may know. I see people on here making simple mistakes with bio or what really happened. It always helps to ask someone who lived in the era.

I remember watching an episode of law and order:svu, there’s a syndrome where children who have been adopted find their biological parents and end up romantically falling for them (usually daughters and fathers)

Is there a reason for why?

@@Zitronen_ I think it’s because they have these feelings of affection towards the person since they are biologically related, but since they are meeting each other so much later in life and never had that typical parent child relationship, they mistake those feelings for romantic ones

I was adopted at birth in 1974, & raised by a single, gay man. My mother had married a man well before I was born, & they had a daughter 5 years before I was born, & he then left her & vanished. She had an affair with a married man & I was the result of that. She had already lost custody of her first child, to be raised by another family member, & so by the time she was due to have me, she knew she still wasn't capable of being a parent. The deal she & my adoptive father came up with was that for the 15 yrs of my life we would have no contact, but anytime after that I could contact her & she agreed to answer. When I was 17, & in a lot of trouble, my adoptive father suggested I go meet her. I met her, my older half sister & my biological father. It was not a positive experience & although she wanted me to come stay with her the next summer, I didn't think that was a good plan at all. I've had some interactions with her & my sister, mostly negative, & my bio father, who I never had contact with again, died on my bday several years ago.

@@darkwings7805 I guess the point is that if the family gives a child for adoption, better not to mess with them later in time. They gave the child for adoption for a reason, usually these are people who are not fit to be parents for a damn good reason. I guess that's the moral of the story.

i feel no sympathy for anyone besides the kids and katie. yes alyssa was a dv victim but it took her bio daughter who she allowed to be abused, to start dating her bio father for her to leave. that was the turning point? some part of me thinks it could be some sort of jealousy? it could be maybe she saw herself in katie and saw her getting groomed and that's what it took but she could've prevented this entire thing. the kids were all stuck in the middle and katie was absolutely a victim of everything. she was taken away from a horrible environment and unwittingly returned to that same place. it should be on her adoptive parents to educate her on the reason she was taken away and maybe if they believe anthony changed then potentially allow visitation but not allow her to move in and definitely not be okay with the marriage. they should have fought so hard to get katie out of that situation even if it meant katie hated them and believed they were the mean parents keeping her from love. you would rather be hated with her safe than be loved with her abused. i'm glad alyssa is speaking up abt dv even if it's late. i hope she was able to reconcile with her own family and is able to raise her children in peace and safety. i wish katie a positive healing journey, i hope she's able to forgive herself and move on. rip baby bennett.

hearing some of these cases, it always surprises me with how delusional the bystanders are and how this whole thing could've been prevented if katies parents or stevens parents would've reported it especially katies parents given the fact her dad had some sort of law enforcement background, but even then, it doesn't take someone with a law enforcement background to tell that the relationship needed to be stopped and steven needed to be arrested.
