With winter 2023 right around the corner, Hcalory has introduced a NEW Heater Possibly the New King of affordable diesel heaters. In this video I’ll be comparing the differences between my OLD 8KW heater VS this NEW Hcalory 8KW heater. Are the main differences improved? What heater would you choose? Lets find out! Thanks for watching 🍻
Hcalory sent me this heater to review for my viewers. I will receive a small commission if a heater is purchased through my links. Update* The Diesel Heaters are back in stock on Amazon.com >> amzn.to/47KUrMq This unit has a new “Level mode” that allows the heater to be adjusted based on a level of heat you choose, by toggling the keys on the pad. This allows the heater to automatically adjust based on the level of heat your set taking the guesswork out and the need to change settings in engineering mode. Like in the older heaters. Coupled with the Bluetooth app and this mode of control, no more need for thermostatic control and extension of the cable, But It’s still a good idea though. 🍻 Winter is coming, we wish you all a warm safe journey! FYI: If you unscrew the nose cone of the cigarette lighter plug-in end, there should be a an in-line fuse already in there so you should not have needed to strip your power cord to add another fuse. Also, if you want/need to add another fuse, it might be better to place it in-line inside of the heater case so there is nothing on your power cord to get snagged and damage it, leaving you stranded until it can be fixed. Seems like it might be a nice unit and easier to travel with it stored than the tall slim units. Thanks for the video!

@@ATEMOFFROAD Also note, you should not have the double fuse on that. Putting the ATO style one inline with the one built into the 12v adapter plug, changes the resistance of that circuit. Keep in mind, the way a fuse works, is by protecting from a short/too high a draw DOWN stream from the point of the fuse. It does nothing up stream of it (hence why your car/rig has a fusible link directly off the battery, and so on)

That IEC 60320-1 C13 connector they use is extremely concerning. As there are many of them in every household if they own a desktop computer or various other AC appliances that commonly use them, it creates the possibility that a user could in inadvertently plug this unit into mains power with disastrous results for the unit and perhaps the user. As these would never pass CSA ANSI standards, they could get rejected if noticed by customs during the import procedure. Unfortunately, HCALORY is not the only manufacturer that is using these connectors for 12V, but hopefully they will get the message and change that. Just as you did due diligence by discussing the potential of adding a fuse, I'd recommend replacing that IEC connector with something like an XT60 or Anderson power pole.

Great review, thank you! I have a couple of the older units and like them a lot, will be looking at one like this for my next purchase. One thing you should be aware of when using an infrared thermometer is that they work by detecting infrared emissions. Not all surfaces are equal in this regard. Shiny surfaces are notorious for lack of emissivity. Flat black and strangely enough water work very well. Do a quick Google on emissivity tables to shed some insight into their accuracy on various surfaces.

@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 7 ай бұрын
I’ll keep you updated for sure most likely through a camp video though. The other heater was a VEVor so I know what you mean by carbon buildup. I usually turn mine up on high for a about 5 minutes before I shut it down especially when I go to winterize it. Haha I’ve been run out of my tent before too when I first started using these. lol until I found out the thermostat is built into the controller, so extending the cable and having the controller in the heated space then allows the thermostat to see the space is becoming heated and throttles way down as it get closer to the set temperature. It’s More efficient too and solved that problem where you loose control. I do know you can go into engineering mode and manually turn down the fans speed and the fuel pump switch frequency, to by pass the thermostat to turn the heater down. But I never really messed with it. It just seemed easier to extend the controller cable. On the new heater the interface is improved, the mode with the bars that moves up and down allows you adjust the temperature up or down to a setting you like so should no longer need to have the controller in the tent , just wireless control from my phone. 🍻

@@ATEMOFFROAD I own 3 Oriental knock-offs and none of them are anywhere _near_ as reliable or well made as my _Eberspacher_ that they are trying to emulate! Main thing is the thermostat - the _real_ one goes into standby once set temp. is reached, it just shuts down and monitors the temp. until it needs to fire up again. I can leave it on all the time and it doesn't pose any threat to my valuables. Cheapo copies just pump diesel constantly unless you shut them off - as far as I know; do any of yours go into standby from a stat signal? I had to replace one of their motors and really struggled to find a matching part - the one I bought had different electrics from the one in the picture so had to be modified. It only worked for an hour then quit, but the pump carried on filling the burn chamber with juice - lucky I was there to pull the plug!

@@Tiersmoke92555 exactly,the controller and controls are different. Improved and more user friendly. Your buying the updated controls and better enclosure. The old heater cannot do what this new heater can do on the fly. Especially For tent camping you won’t need to extend the controllers cable so the thermostat can be in the heated space. They fixed that with the new level mode heat setting. The Old heater is an indoor heater only unless you modify it. Also for advanced settings you must go into engineering mode and calculate altitude/fan and fuel pump speed if the thermostat is overrode. This setting would need to be changed every time based on location. The new heater takes the guess work out of all that and automatically adjusts. It’s more efficient this way and way easier to set up for the mobile user. No others are at this level.🍻

I will be impressed when they start using metal housing, full metal jacket for that thing is the only way. No plastic, and the biggest fail is it continues to run and waste fuel after reaching desired temp. I use the old style you showed, but I removed it and rebuilt it into a metal box with plenty of fire protection.

Yeah I have no control over that, it’s most likely the plastic they use on engines that can handle hight heat, but they could be listening which is good for new products. As far as controls go the modes seem very simple to throttle down to the lowest setting, no more trouble with that. which is pretty low. If need be any lower you may as well just turn it off. 🍻

Thee is no limit to the amount of time and money that can be spent to make you more comfortable using a liquid fuel heater. There is a reason this type of heater is generally so affordable. They make is safe enough. Most mishaps occur due to improper installation so a redesign by the manufacturer would only serve to increase the price..

@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 6 ай бұрын
The new mode of control will allow you to have the heater outside, That could also be a downside as diesel can gel. Karosene can solve that problem. This new mode Takes the manual guesswork out and automatically adjusts the heater based on the setting you feel is most comfortable. There is always room for improvement and after using a few heaters this one solves a lot of those problems. For the future I’d like to see a taller box that has more space to fit all the accessories in. my only complaint really. I do remove the exhaust between uses as my packing space it tight, But it can be fixed to he heater with a bracket. Some people mention that the 12v connection for power is a problem which I do agree, it’s a standard 120v plug. However someone would have to introduce a totally different plug and really not know what there doing for this to be problem. If your passed that, any plug better than the other style I show is better as those connections like to come loose during transport and can cause under voltage faults. Thanks for watching 🍻

Sir you should put the fuse as close to the battery as possible. That way the power cable itself is fused. Now if your plugging it in to a factory cigarette lighter you don’t need to fuse anything. It’s already fused. Just make sure it has the correct amp fuse for the factory cig lighter. If it’s higher than 20amp you can replace it to a 20amp. FYI

@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 7 ай бұрын
I would think a full size RV/ travel VAN would be sufficient enough to heat for some perspective, there’s to many variables to really get a good solid idea Sq ft. How well it’s insulated, and how cold it is? For example I’ve taken my heater in 17F and heated my roof top tent to about 79F on low. Little to no insulation. It’s made to heat cars , vans, campers RVS and I’ve seen people use these for small shops and cabins. As for the smell, I get an occasional wiff of diesel usually at start up and shutdown when the unit is running rich. Once it leans out I don’t smell anything. Just be sure to keep the exhaust far from the air intake and you will be good. For RVS and campers I see people keep the entire units inside and poke a hole through the floor or wall for the exhaust so these heaters can be inside circulating the indoor heat which would make the heater more efficient VS my use to heat up a tent and I’m heating cold air all the time when In use. Always have a carbon monoxide detector close by i the heated space. I like mine because it also has a thermometer built in. I listed the link in the description box of this videos I Hope that helps and thanks for watching. 🍻

@@ATEMOFFROAD my heater is outside in a locker, i have the exhaust system running in thelocker which keeps that area luke warm, and combustion intake drawing from the top of the locker. Then the non combustion air intake side i have rigged an intake from the inside of the yacht, at a high point, to recirculate warm air and route the internal 75mm 5m long insulated duct around the yacht internally to where i might need it. I have also pierced holes in certain sections and that heats other sections if needed. Almost like a sprinkler/soaker system in a garden. The holes are at strategic places to warm the main cabin area, when i am sleeping at the forward cabin so in the morning the fore cabin can be at 20 degrees c. And the main cabin around 12 degrees so it isnt a shock, it warms the main cabin up in a matter of mins. I vent the cabins the main heat is in to keep condensation down a bit. It is a dry heat however so no issues from any from the unit. It is purely cold air hitting warm air...

@@stevenlarratt3638 great set up sounds solid. I was curious about anti gelling additives and if you ever needed to use those in precaution to sudden temperature drops as this heater doesn’t offer any insulation surrounding the tank. I was told by the local gas station that there diesel fuels are “winter blends” where they have pre mixed additives to prevent gelling. This makes sense as they probably would not be able to pump the diesel in sub freezing areas. Thinking ahead I have not yet needed the use of additives, but I do move my heater from warm to colder climates so some stations may not have the winter blend available. Do you see this as a problem on your end? Should there be concern using an additive in the heater? What happens to the heater if the diesel gels? Any thoughts? 🍻

I have the same heater as this one. I kept getting a slight diesel smell after about an hour of running time. I finally discovered the issue. As the heater warms up so does the fuel tank setting next to it. With the vented cap enclosed in the box it vents directly into the box. The suction from the fan picks up the odor and sends it out the heater duct. If I leave the lid open the issue goes away. Looking for a vented cap with a vent tube to vent the vapors outside the box.

The controller is not tuned properly from the factory. They just use settings to get it running. You can go into the settings and tune it better to burn cleaner and use less fuel. That is a good idea you have to use a fuel cap with a vent tube too.

I do a fair bit of higher altitude (above 5000' elev) camping. The MaxSpeedingRods (and some similar Chinese heaters) report to have automatic calibration for altitude. Does this one have that? Another question, my heater port in the side of the canopy has a thermostatic probe... Is there a way to connect an external thermostat? I plan to have the diesel heater outside the truck (on ground or mounted to the side) so if it is measuring the ambient temperature of the outside that would be pointless and essentially it becomes a manual on/off remote control heater instead of turning on automatically at night while sleeping. Nice video - thank you for the review. I look forward to your response.
@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 7 ай бұрын
The manufacturer claims the heater self adjusts for higher altitude, this would make sense as there are now two user friendly modes that can be accessed based on your setting. If you watch my winter camping videos I mention on the older heaters that extending the cable to reach the heated space is a must, because the thermostat is built inside the controller. And the thermostat automatically adjust the heater to room/tent heat you set and that if you Leave the thermostat outside it will cause the heater to run up to full load. Bringing the thermostat inside the heated space also allows the heater to throttle way down, saving fuel and power making the heater much more efficient and controllable . This mode is also on the new heater, unfortunately the cable is too short to bring the controller inside the tent or heated space. This new controller allows a secondary mode with no need to extend the cable, that if you are heating a space separate from the heater like a tint, new mode allows you to throttle up or down the heater regardless of where the thermostat is located. This new mode calculates the fuel and fan speeds based on elevation and outputs a steady controlled heat. We see this control in the form of green (low) to red (high) or hotter as the bars on the HMI. Hope this helps 🍻

@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 7 ай бұрын
@@MarkBuchanan3D yes a more user friendly manual mode if you will , it won’t automatically adjust you would still need to extend the cable as previously mentioned. For myself it works because once the space is heated the heater is usually throttled down to it’s lowest setting anyway. I keep a carbon monoxide detector in my tent it has a built in thermometer, so I’ll manually adjust based on that readout for the night. Now what would be really cool is if the app had a built in thermometer and through the app it automatically adjusted. I’m still playing with the app to see if that is an option

I totally understand that some components of the heater are the same and burner, except that the controller and controls are different. Improved and more user friendly. Your buying the updated controls and better enclosure. The old heater cannot do what this new heater can do on the fly. For tent camping you don’t need to extend the controllers cable so the thermostat can be in the heated space. They fixed that with the new level mode. It’s more efficient and way easier to set up for the mobile user. No others are at this level

Someone would have to introduce a completely different cable for that to be a problem. Worst case senerio is the unit shorts out and could catch on fire. I guess will have to try it? Although, this is what the mfgs says: Unparalleled Safety Features: Engineered with a crucial overheating protection function, ensuring your heater operates safely. Certified and compliant with industry-leading safety standards, guaranteeing peace of mind with every use.

Using IEC C13 C14 connectors for 12V DC when it's usually used for 110/230V AC seems like a really bad idea. For DC and this amount of amps there exists connectors like XT60 or XT90, so why introduce this kind of potential hazard.
@ATEMOFFROAD
@ATEMOFFROAD 7 ай бұрын
I am very tempted to show what would happen in the case 120v AC was input into the mains. But In theory we can also predict what would happen. Remember the controllers control circuit is what relays the heater circuit to turn ON. The controllers control circuit is also low voltage/ low amps, Controlling a HIGH amperage heater circuit. I suspect if AC is applied the low voltage/amp control circuitry would take the hit before the possibility of the high amp heater circuit absorbing a load to catch fire. The circuit would be damaged like a fuse shorted, and in the form of a bad trace on the board. With the low current circuit damaged you would not even be able to turn the machine on with AC applied. It would sit there and wait. likey reducing any shock or hazards. You would just have a dead ☠️ heater. Ive also verified the pinout on an AC 120v cable in relation to the 12v heater connections pinout and this is what I have found. If connected, AC Hot lands on DC ground, AC neutral lands On +12v.

Running one of these in a large conservatory of 16 x 20ft, same thermal value as your garage I'd assume, for 12 hours uses 0.3 of a litre of diesel and heats the place al day with no fuss at all. Noisy when it starts up but when temp gets up it's fairly quiet and keeping it on tickover uses very little diesel. I know they run better on Kerosene (heating oil) but I don't have a supplier for 10L at a time.

One other thing I don't think you hit on. The combustion air intake is fixed, on the bottom of the new unit. On the old one you would run a hose from it to the outside of, say, your garage, and you would extend the combustion exhaust too. If you are going to use this indoors, and plumb your exhaust outside, you probably want to figure a way to get that combustion air intake to the out of doors. Just so everyone understands, these heaters have two circuits. A combustion circuit and a heated air circuit. So two fans, two separate circuits that have their own individual needs.

How would this unit do heating a 30x40 non-insulated pole barn in your opinion? Can the entire unit be brought inside if the exhaust is vented outside or would I need to add a hose to bring outside air into the air intake? Thank you for this video, I'm looking for a solution to provide some level of warmth to my barn so I can work on vehicles during the winter months below freezing. I hope to hear your opinion as I have no experience with these heaters to date. I do like the design of this one but maybe something else may be more suited to my application.

@@ATEMOFFROAD thank you for responding. Yes the ceiling is open with some very thin insulation on the roof to prevent condensation. There are narrow gaps in the insulation that allow condensation that drips on my vehicles. I think my best use of funds right now would be enclosing the ceiling and insulating the walls before I try installing probably two of these units on opposing walls in the barn. An average car battery is about 48amp hours so you should get at least haft that in hours 20-24 (on low setting-1amp per hour) of use on a fully charged car battery. I don’t advocate using your actual car battery as this can drain them and you may not be able to start your car. Always use a separate battery dedicated to the heater.

😒 I bought this heater based upon this review. I'm curious to hear what your ongoing experience with it has been. I have been underwhelmed unfortunately. I bought it for ice fishing/camping and seem to get quite a few E-05 overheating errors whenever a 3" vent hose is attached to the heat output hole. This makes it difficult to keep the unit outside and introduces a risk of CO when i bring it inside the tent. Without a vent hose it runs reliably. The only other issue is my percieved poor performance with heating. In my Thermal Eskimo 850 XD this heater can only get the interior up to +12C when it was -14C outside. I guess i was hoping for more heat ... having my internal hub temps around +18 would have been better. Do you have a followup review you can offer now that you have used it? Is it performing well out in nature for you?

thanks - i'll look for those updated videos. the unit was outside and elevated off the ice with logs so air could be drawn from the bottom intake. i was using 3" with minimal length to the inside ... maybe 4 feet at most? I still say the unit is not easy to clamp a 3" hose on to. the flange is very small making it hard for the ring clamp to grab. I was using diesel - all diesel here in Saskatchewan is rated for the cold we have. I did not extend the thermostat controller into the space as i was using the mobile app. Not sure that would make a difference? The heater was tested in both the Level mode and the temp mode. I just couldnt get it above 12 deg C. even after i brought it in to avoid the E=05@@ATEMOFFROAD

@@kirklange5218 how long has the heater been ran on High? I’ve seen these heaters get primed for way to long before first start up and they run really rich, the unburnt fuel builds up and it hampers the glow plugs ability to ignite throwing off the controls and sensors. Also you can try taking off the exhaust tube extension and place just the muffler over the end of the 90. You will want to watch that the heat wont harm the heaters enclosure. Maybe wrap it with something heat and fire proof. Take off the air inlet screen filter and check for blockage and good air flow on the bottom of the heater. The plastic mesh that’s loose in there can be removed. And lastly reduce the 3” duct to 3’ if possible. What duct are you using ? Got a link? In my last update video I explain that using the hard aluminum one before the flex is better, the flex ones are made of PVC outter jacket and shouldn’t be getting that hot. Run the heck out of it on the bench on max high to get that all cleaned out and should be good. Just some things to try before returning. And lastly I have all the links to what I use for my heater in the description box below. 🍻

It is recommended to have the heater inside. Yes it is easier to have it outside but instead of heating -14 air, the longer it runs inside the warmer it will get since you are heating warmer inside air instead of continuous -14 air. If you dont want it inside, run a hose from inside, out to the heater. I had to 3d print an adapter to my heater so I could use a hose back when I had my heater outside.
