When we talk about the intensity of a workout, we most-often measure it by your heart rate. The higher the heart rate (more beats per minute) the higher the intensity.
Most people think that in order to burn the maximum amount of fat in their bodies they have to workout at the highest intensity (heart rate) possible. More calories burned equals more fat lost, right?
NOT TRUE!
In fact research has proven that you can actually target stored body fat better by working out at a LOWER intensity.
You see, at the higher intensities your body relies primarily on carbohydrates to be used as fuel for the activity. However, if you can keep your intensity (and your heart rate) BELOW a certain threshold your body will rely primarily on body fat reserves to be used as its energy source. Amazing, right?
This heart rate zone lies in the 50-70% of your maximum heart rate range.
⭐️ Low-Intensity Steady State Cardio Heart Rate Equation ⭐️
220 - Your Age (years) = Maximum Heart Rate (HRmax)
HRmax x 0.5 = Lower end of LISS range
HRmax x 0.7 = Higher end of LISS range
Our goal with LISS cardio is to get your heart rate above the lower limit (50%) but keep it below the upper limit (70%) for 30 minutes or more.
The goal of this Low Intensity Steady State (LISS) cardio workout is to get your heart rate up only into this “fat burn” intensity, and then keep it there for the duration of the 30 minutes.
I’ll help you to do that so we can be sure that you’re maximizing your efforts and getting the most out of this workout.
I’ve got quite a few other LISS workouts here on KZfaq as well; one of the most-common comments I get is “can you do one of these for people with knee pain?”
You asked and I listened!
In this workout I only included exercises that were easy on your knees and joints. No squats, lunges, or jumping, but all the great fat-burn you would expect out of a LISS cardio workout. So I hope that helps you out!

You lose count on some of the exercises but it's still worth it to get your explanations . It made me sweat.

This was great and super gentle on my knees and lower back. My heart rate was high in the 140s-150s even hitting the 160s a few times. I have been struggling with cardio cause of my knee and back pain but I’ll be back to do more of these because they are so doable and I don’t see myself getting burnt out by it.

These LIIT workouts are perfect for me, as I have Long Covid and am starting over with my workouts. It’s been difficult to accept that I must keep the intensity low, but your workouts make me feel like I’m actually DOING something without pushing too hard and having a setback.

Your channel is great. I just transitioned to purely a home gym but I haven't acquired any conditioning equipment for LISS yet. Was looking for a way to just use body weight to achieve 30 minutes of weekly LISS until I purchase a rower or stationary bike and this is just totally perfect. Thanks so much for the content!

Thanks for this. I have been going through different liss workouts for this program I am on and I have loved yours the most. I just did 2 thirty minutes workouts you have and burned 400 calories and stayed in my zone. The other one felt like torture this felt perfect.

I loved the workout and did it for 45 minutes. I am thinking about doing it again holding dumbbells and wearing weight straps around the ankles. Then the workout will become more like strength training. Thank you very much for this video. Greetings from The Netherlands.

These workouts don't hurt my knees at all. Thank you. I tried the other Liss workouts from your channel, but my knees would hurt barely 4/5 minutes into the session. Thanks for these. Would really appreciate if you could share the kind of diet I should have because I am hungry more now and I feel I am eating more than usual so my goal of weight loss is going nowhere.

I like this video there is one move that I can't do I can't slap the bottom of my foot with the opposite hand so I'll just do something different. Would you consider doing a video on functional exercise

hey Dr. Beckstrand, one month ago I've hurt my anterior cruciate ligament playing football. The doctor advised not to operate surgically cause it's not broken (but it has partially lost it's functionality) and, if I don't play any sport professionally, it's not necessary to have an operation. What are the best practices I can follow to start improve my knee before hitting the Gym and reinforce the muscles? thanks.

I feel super relieved after watching this video because I used to think high-intensity workout is best for burning fat. Btw, I want to know what I can do to reduce lower belly fat effectively, especially one around the umbilicus. I'm 1m65 and 48kg but feel really hopeless about this. Thanks so muchhhh.

I have a question. I’m 46 years old. I was doing thuis workout and at some point my heart rate was 130. That is outside the 50-70. range for my age. But I was still able to talk and was not out of breath. Is it ok to keep going, or is it wise to lower my heart rate down?

Your range is actually 87-122! So 130 is pretty close.

Most of these exercises should be safe for patients with non-serious cervical pain... but I would encourage you to consult a local healthcare professional to be sure.

Thank you so much😂all everybody doing is HIIT workouts jumping lunging squating sick of that shit🙄 I walk all day transport patients at hospital 45yrs old damn job busted me down I can't do that 😩fell on both knees trip unto pavement 2020 never got it checked out shut down happened ER doctor offices closed🤷 March 2021 had x-ray /MRI for knee pain just learned of bone on bone arthritis in knee caps🙄July 2021 fell off riding bike took hand off handle fell on knee again😔unbelievable joint pain like a mf😫so 🤷Thanks been looking for knee exercises👍

I like these workouts but my HR runs high. So my 70% is 133 but I have to move at a sloths pace to keep it under that. Any advice?

It would be great If you did a knee friendly and back friendly workouts series “strengthening / cardio / …”😭😭 This comes from a person who has been really suffering from her knee and back for about a year and a half🥲💔💔💔
