Best cruiser review i have seen so far - from a real world practical view. Losing the split fold tailgate is a huge mistake - potential deal breaker.

Great info, with all the mods you spoke about. Will I be able to put family of 4 in there and tow with out upgrading the GVM which hasn’t been mentioned yet. Are Toyota hoping the after market sector will sort this so Toyota can cancel or disclaim any future blame/warranty. What’s the roof capacity if we want to put on roof rack LC200 has 200kg has this been retained or increased? Bullbar and winch, which models can fit winch and bar? The interior is a huge step for Toyota but lacks current technology. In 2 years time it will be 5years behind.

The wheel studs are 14mm, not 12mm like you normally get with 6 stud wheels. Looked like it was a bit tight getting the wheel on and I'm guessing the tapered nuts didn't make much contact. Do you think this is an issue that will mean you'll need aftermarket wheels that are made for 14mm studs and therefore special to the 300?

Wow, first review I’ve seen with some negative comments so well done there. Funny how Toyota left the crease line where the split tailgate would have gone. I wonder if the aftermarket guys will offer a conversion back to a split tailgate. I think the one piece gate is a weight saving exercise as that lower tailgate is quite heavy. Personally I think the center screen looks like a tacked on after market job and will date very quickly. One improvement I DO like is it’s lose of the bum up stance and the car now sits level. As for the V6, only time will tell but even if Toyota has done what seems like a lot of whiz bangery the old saying still rings true: There’s no substitute for cubic inches. You can’t get around the fact that if an engine is smaller it has to work harder to do the same amount of work. I don’t think a 7% or 200kg weight saving will make up for the drop in capacity and as for the 10 speed transmission, again it will help make the car perform better but that transmission is working a lot harder and changing gears a lot more often. Again more wear and with you guys already working out how much junk you can bolt on it will be easy to see the weight increase from 2500kg to over 3000kg pretty quickly. There is always a compromise and in this case it may be longevity. Even so, Toyota will sell as many as they can make as there is no real competition. With most people that buy Nissan Patrols the first thing they point out is how much cheaper they are than Cruisers. But Toyotas dominate in the dealer network, after market and resale values and the Cruiser is the bench mark to which all others are compared to for a reason. I won’t be in a hurry to upgrade my 2020 Sahara. Cheers Stuart.

If worked at that workshop I wouldn't be able to hold myself back from having a good look at the car 😂 well done guys. Toyota definitely took a couple steps back with this model compared to the 200. Smaller fuel capacity, 1 piece tailgate, no sliding and no armrest in the 2nd row seats and smaller tyres, among other things. Let's see how it'll handle the test of time.

What a design tragedy! The 2022 Land Cruiser 300 Series loses its split tailgate! On our LC200 we use the lower split tailgate all the time, to stand on, to sit on, as a table, as a workbench, as a place to put computers, cameras, drones etc etc etc, whilst the upper split provides protection from sun and rain. The one-piece tailgate on the new LC300 removes all of that fun and convenience and would absolutely stop us from buying one. Additionally, on LC300 the mounting of spare wheel carriers would result in both wheels having to be swung out to enable the tailgate to be opened, rather than the simple opening of the upper tailgate on LC200, without even having to touch the spare wheels. And another point - when a boat or caravan with stone-guard is hitched up, the swing of the tailgate is such that it may not be openable. Certainly, standing behind the tailgate to open it will be at best awkward and may be impossible. The whole thing is utterly ridiculous. What was Toyota thinking???
@jigsaw7019
@jigsaw7019 2 жыл бұрын
Top review mate. 100% agree that Toyota dropped the ball on the not having the split tailgate. Not only with it being so useful as you mentioned, the real downside will be the boat owners who definitely won’t be able to open the back fully as the anchor/bow sprit protrudes out a fair bit. Not a total deal breaker, but I do like the 200 series set up better in that regard.

Great review, if the split tailgate is the only real issue, given the number of slide out compartments from within the internal rear luggage area you put in your vehicle. I carry a table as a work area as the slide out BBQ/sink take up a fair amount or room. It does seem to me that the interior, engine, driveability (by all reviews) leaves the 200 a long way behind. I watched a drag race between the 200 series and the basic 300, just not a race the 300 was much better, less noisy in all facets of exterior noise, again no spit gate....move on. I have ordered the new 300 and cant wait to get hold of it..

Congrats - you’ll love the new cruiser when it arrives. The split tailgate was a feature for us which made it a landcruiser - it was unique and a functional design. Everyone sets their car up different and there will be solutions as you’ve mentioned. We use the design of the split tailgate, from keeping the dogs in when in the back to using it as a workbench - it’s hugely functional and as a work car those things matter. That’s just how we use it and our experience. Thanks for the feedback and your thoughts!

No good for vans with that tailgate. Extended draw bars for caravan manufacturers to take under consideration. One of the most convenient features of the 200 was the split tailgate. Even the boys in 24/7 rarely see new cars tackling the hard tracks. The only people who buy this car will be the Toorak tractor set and the retirees doing their big lap. Again no people who will be modifying their car too much. Keen to see next week's video and see who people will modify their cars for touring and towing vans(which is what really people buy NEW land cruiser for!). Also thanks for the look of the new Landcruiser without the sales spin!. From what you have shown is looks alright, not sure what people are angry about. Good points but I think you’ll be surprised at how many new cars are equipped straight from factory for outback touring. We work next to ARB Thornleigh and they have brand new $100k+ models in for full fit outs daily. 24/7 is entertainment, not many ppl tackle tracks like that on long trips, they are the kinds of tracks you do as a weekend warrior. An outback tourer is setup different to a rock crawler for obvious reasons. As a tow car it’s great, we’ll miss the noise and feel of the V8 but the new engine and gearbox combination go well together.

I get it lots of people put gear on their new truck, but I don't know too many that will take their brand new car on really tough tracks right off the bat. Thats all I was saying. There will always be one that is wealthy enough who can afford to take their new 100k truck out and really test it! I cant wait till some does this, take a new 300 with some kit on it and give it a real bash and see if comes out the other side, now that would be interesting viewing.

@@SignatureCamperTrailers maybe look at the 300 in this light, touring, Equipment, bullbar, roof rack, maxtrax, + battery, tow ball weight, long range tank, full fuel. But you can’t get in car because it will be over GVM. Also GR can’t put winch on bar due to safety system. Oh what a feeling Toyota

@@Mixos_place yes Michael, we did. First trip was across the Simpson with our ARB rooftop tent and awning. Travel out bush somewhere every year. Although the 100 has only done 240,000 most of its life it has been towing something..boats caravan and TVan. So fortunately we have all the STUFF we need..having said that...the winch is off. We have never used it. Should we get a new 300, we still should be able to get good money for our 100

Good review BUT - the mods you are suggesting cannot be done in reality. Bullbar& winch, 2nd battery required for winch, extra fuel tank 150l +150l fuel, rear bar, ridiculous wheels & tyres (because you can't legally go from +60 offset to +0 offset, let alone wider rims) and for most people a lift with heavier springs and a drawer system with fridge. By the time you have added all this (some of it illegal) your payload of 600kg has more than disappeared without even a driver being able to get in.
@SignatureCamperTrailers
@SignatureCamperTrailers 2 жыл бұрын
The 200 series had similar payload, as does the Patrol and most 4wds. In all those vehicles those mods are done plus more. Hence why several companies offer GVM upgrades. Those mods can be done and you will see in time some seriously kitted out 300 series Landcruisers! We are looking forward to some epic builds.
@einfelder8262
@einfelder8262 2 жыл бұрын
@@SignatureCamperTrailers GVM upgrade is only slightly useful if you don't plan to tow. If you want to tow what Toyota says you can (3500kg) you can't really do ANY mods. If you go for GVM upgrade plus mods your GCM won't change, so then you cannot tow anywhere near 3500kg. Just because many 200s are kitted out, doesn't make them legal. The skinnier tyres on the 300 makes it even harder to go wider tyres and stay legal, and please don't tell people they can go from +60 wheel to a +0 wheel with a wider rim and tyre and be legal. Just a big NO to that one.

With the "tail gate" complaints, we need to look past the perceived inconvenience and realise we need to adapt to change. Yes, split tailgate was useful..but we found it was in the way if tools etc were on it,( from the pull out drawers). With the variety of pull out shelves and trays available now, in all sorts of configurations, the split shelf is far more practical..to us

It will take time for some to come around to this - the same thing happened when the 200 was released. As for the bigger wheel - it needs a suspension lift to make it work properly. Clearance was always the main concern with the 200 needing a bit of cutting to work.

In my opinion, the new LC300 lets the model down badly in the engine department. Admittedly, direct from the factory, the LC300 has a little more power & torque than the outgoing LC200. However, in reality, Toyota has 'tricked up' a stressed V6 to appear superior to a lazy V8 in an attempt to satisfy government demands for smaller, greener, more efficient engines, whilst 'pulling the wool' over buyers eyes in making them feel comfortable with what is actually a retrograde step in terms of reliability and the potential for exciting engine power & torque upgrades. For instance, a Steinbauer Power Module will safely increase power & torque in the V8 by over 30% yielding figures of 260kW & 850Nm respectively. Try getting that out of the V6 without blowing it to the Scheissenhausen!!! For what it's worth (probably nothing), I have voiced my concerns direct with Toyota. We need many more to do the same. Looks like I'll be keeping my LC200 Sahara V8 for many years to come!

As much as I love my grandpa’s LC200 GXL, I drove a LC300 Sahara a week ago, and I personally think it’s a better car in every way, very torquey, it wasn’t “stressed” like what other people think it is without even taking it for a test drive… mind you I love the V8 very much, has a great note and is easy to drive and is amazing, but it’s a 15 year old engine, and this new engine is moving forward with modern times. Once I have some $ I’ll be ordering a GR Sport LC300.. ofc though everyone has their own opinions on the new car, some like it, others don’t, and that’s the same with other LC models.. 👍🏻
