Hi Mac, I have not contacted you for a long time. I keep going over and over your lessons so you never age. I am working on the Amen break right now. I have a foot pedal and a large drum I use as a bass drum at home and having a great time trying to coordinate it all as I have never played a trap set. The problem I have is that I play in a couple of hippie marching bands where I cannot use a bass drum. At the bottom of my washboard, I have a hollow wooden thing that looks like a fish with scales. It makes a wonderful sound. So, when I am not at home, I imagine the fish to be the bass drum and rather than using my right hand just to keep the pulse on the washboard, I am also using it to hit the wooden fish on the bass parts. Do you have any other suggestions? I have not been able to find the suitcase you suggested as a bass drum for less than 200 dollars, including shipping, on the internet; and I don't really need it, but it has given me a wonderful reason to haunt local thrift shops and garage sales. So, to reiterate, since I can't use my foot, how do you feel about my right hand doubling as a pulse keeper AND as a bass drum player? Thanks, I appreciate you SO MUCH!!! Kathy

Any advice on how to find a group to play with, especially where as the washboard is more of an uncommon instrument?

Great question, I moved to Berlin Germany from NYC 4 years ago, I found my current band by joining a local musicians Facebook group and I put a post up saying I played the washboard and was looking for a band. Not sure where you live but lots of city's have blues or old time music jams at bars or parks, try that out, again you can find those on facebook as well. Without FB you could go old school and make a paper poster and hang it in the local instrument shops and the practice studios saying you are looking to join a band. Washboard sounds perfect in old time music but works great in any genre, soul, funk, hip hop, metal, do not let history limit you. Have fun, good luck!!
