The Amen Break on the Washboard! The Amen Break is the most sampled drum beat in music history. From NWA to the Invisible Man, the Amen break wasn't just used in over 2000 songs it actually created entire new genres of music. In this video I take a look at that amazing history and then we learn how to play this funky pattern on the washboard. Six seconds and a drum can change the world.

Well done ... you have laid out some really solid information on using the washboard and rhythms. I play seated with it on my lap as I play spoons at the same time, with my left hand and thimbles on my right. My question to you is ... the drag and the tap elements as accents to a rhythm what do you consider is the best as the sound a washboard represents when mixing it with other instruments you are playing, I hope I am making sense to you with the way I have posed the question. I think with any song the most important thing as a drummer is our job is to keep the beat and stay in the pocket. Just don't over do it, don't play over the vocals or solos and use the little space between lines or phrases to show off a bit with drags and bells and stuff. Really it comes down to playing within the limits of the song, leave them wanting more but don't be afraid to take chances when you have a space. I hope this helps.
