Leeds United: The Future? was a BBC documentary which aired a week after hooligans wrecked the town of Bournemouth on Leeds United's return to the First Division in the 1989/90 Season.

A bank holiday weekend, really hot weather, a seaside town and Leeds are playing, needing a point to go up to the first division. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to see the potential for trouble. It didn’t help that it was played at Bournemouth as well which wasn’t the biggest ground, even back then. Which meant that Leeds were only allocated 2,000 tickets.

That was one of the best weekends ever, the night before managed to get some local slapper back to the B&B for some action. Saturday, blistering hot day, a win, champions a tear up, a piss up and beach party.

When Leeds won the league its often forgotten Sheff Wednesday finished 3rd. And won the league cup in 1991. They also had a cracking side.

The irony of Vinny jones preaching when he was the biggest thug on the pitch is probably lost on most Leeds fans.

Its amazing how things have turned out. Now its all about gun and knife crime, heroin dealing, and terrisom, looking back at this, and it seems trivial

The video of the fans attacking the coppers at 10 minutes may have been at Elland Rd, but it wasn't Leeds fans doing it. It was Barnsley fans in the early to mid 80's. Not a Leeds or Barnsley fan, but I was at that game as the firm my dad worked for had an executive box and we were given tickets every now and again.

I think this game had all the ingredients not necessarily for disaster, but certainly trouble on a pretty large scale. The fact that Leeds needed a result in order to win the Div. 2 title/promotion, while Bournemouth were also in need of a result to try and avoid the drop, was surely always going to lead to a tense occasion. Although when the fixtures were compiled for the 1989-90 season, such a scenario couldn't obviously have been envisaged, when Bournemouth v Leeds was scheduled for the final day. But in view of how things actually panned out, & the fact the game was scheduled for a bank holiday weekend, also that Dean Court was a relatively small ground, what in relation to ticket allocation, and if you also add in alcohol, and there was surely always going to be the potential problems. And sadly it proved that way, & with English clubs about to re-enter Europe, it couldn't really have happened at a worse time. Though thankfully, our English representatives were still able to participate in European competition, in the following 1990-91 campaign.

I was a Bournemouth fan at that game and it was easy to see this coming. Bloody hot weather, heavy handed policing, a must win game for both sides. There was very little, or no fighting between the rival fans though, it was all to do with the police.
