The squidding season has been abundant this Fall so I decided to try my hand at catching some! Watch my video to see what it's like to go squidding at night - a truly authentic experience of living in the Pacific Northwest!
There are multiple beaches and piers throughout Seattle and surrounding neighborhoods to catch squid - I originally chose Golden Gardens in Ballard as I figured it was decently close to downtown where I live, and had a nice scenic beach/pier. Unfortunately, there was quite a bit of gas leakage from boats in the water around the pier so I didn't feel comfortable eating seafood from there so we drove to Edmonds Beach north of Seattle.
It was insanely busy at the dock and cold, but the experience was super fun! It was more difficult than it looked to hook the squid - more experienced people were hooking one after another and quickly filled their buckets while we struggled away at it. Eventually we got a hang of it and began to catch some...Will try it again soon!
Equipment:
1. Trout fishing pole that is not too stiff, but not too flexible either. Ideal length is 7-8 ft.
2. A few squid jigs in varying sizes and colors - depending on the lighting and weather conditions, squids will be attracted to different jigs.
3. A bucket with a basket or net to put your squid in - they'll squirt a lot of ink once they lay in your bucket so the basket/net helps filter out the ink for easier cleaning later!
4. A license! If you get caught without one you could be charged with theft on top of a fine - if the cop is in a bad enough mood you could even sit in jail overnight so just get a license.
5. A flashlight so you can shine on your equipment when you need to swap out jigs or if the line gets tangled in the dark, etc.
Have fun and catch lots of squid guys!!!
Hope you guys enjoy the video and it inspires you to go out and try it yourself!
