This was a very important experience for Frodo. To see Bilbo, who he loved and held amongst the highest of Hobbits, display such polluted evil characteristics, taught him he could not trust anyone whilst he held the ring. Even Gandalf was tempted to hold it. So, as daunting as that knowledge was, he knew exactly what Galadriel meant when she said to be a ring bearer, is to be alone.

I don't know why, but this scene between Bilbo and Frodo seems almost allegorical, particularly the generation that fought in WWI and the generation that fought in WWII. It makes sense with the context behind it. JRRT served in WWI, and his sons also joined the war effort in WWII. LoTR was written in 1948, several years after the war ended (though it was not published until the 1950s). Bilbo went on his adventure with the dwarves, believing it to be that, an adventure. He didn't know what he would face and that he witness death and destruction and war, that he would lose his friends along the way, much like the boys of WWI who had no idea what they were walking into. Bilbo gives his heir Frodo his sword and armour, things that saved his life when he fought: the first generation were the ones wearing the uniforms and wielding the guns, now it's the next ones, their heirs. It's even caught in what Bilbo says: "I'm sorry I brought this upon you my boy. I'm sorry you must carry this burden. I'm sorry for everything." and he cries. They knew what their sons were going to have to see, and do, be forced to do, and knew there was a good chance their boys would never make it home again. They made bad decisions, and their sons would have to pay the price for them, just like Bilbo picking up the Ring and Frodo now having to destroy it.

"'Have you got it there?' he asked in a whisper. 'I can't help feeling curious, you know, after all I've heard. I should very much like just to peep at it again.' 'Yes, I've got it,' answered Frodo, feeling a strange reluctance. 'It looks just the same as ever it did.' 'Well, I should just like to see it for a moment,' said Bilbo. When he dressed, Frodo found that while he slept the Ring had been hung around his neck on a new chain, light but strong. Slowly he drew it out. Bilbo put out his hand. But Frodo quickly drew back the Ring. To his distress and amazement he found that he was no longer looking at Bilbo; a shadow seemed to have fallen between them, and through it he found himself eyeing a little wrinkled creature with a hungry face and bony groping hands. He felt a desire to strike him. [...] Bilbo looked at Frodo's face and passed his hand across his eyes. 'I understand now,' he said. 'Put it away! I am sorry: sorry you have come in for this burden: sorry about everything. Don't adventures ever end? I suppose not. Someone else always has to carry on the story. Well, it can't be helped. I wonder if it's any good trying to finish my book? But don't let's worry about it now - let's have some real news! Tell me all about the Shire!' Frodo hid the Ring away, and the shadow passed leaving hardly a shred of memory."

I was lucky enough to watch this in the theaters when i was a teenager. And i can say, the jump scare i had when bilbo was tempted by the ring is on my top 5 jump scares. Absolutely was not expecting it. And yet after that, i was in tears seeing how much pain Bilbo is living with because of the ring. Ian Holm didnt have that much screen time, but he did a fantastic job.

I heard so many people say that Tolkien's characters are so one dimensional and everything is too black and white and it's scenes like this that make me think those people must have watched different movies than i did...

Was it common to wear Chainmail against the skin back in more medieval times? Did people wear it over or under their clothes?
@NATIK001
@NATIK001 2 жыл бұрын
You would usually wear something tough and durable under the chainmail, often a padded, quilted shirt like a gambeson, but sometimes just a layer of decently thick leather. Mithril is a special fantasy metal though, its rings aren't supposed to bite into your skin and mithril itself can absorb and disperse energy (kinda like Vibranium in Marvel). The undergarments worn under chainmail in real life were largely worn to help cushion and disperse energy from attacks and to keep the cold of direct metal to skin contact away. Also if you got hit with a powerful blow and had chainmail in direct contact with skin you risked the chain links digging deep into the flesh which would be rather uncomfortable to dig out. Theoretically I guess you could skip the padded undergarment when wearing mithril, but it seems like it would still be a good idea to wear anything underneath, at least to ward against cold.

He should not feel sorry at all!! It anything it's Isildur and Elronds fault for not destroying the ring when they had the chance!!
@imeaiwteh7540
@imeaiwteh7540 2 жыл бұрын
The ring was meant to be destroyed at free will, and Elrond feared he could’ve succumbed to the power and temptation of the ring, hence he couldn’t have fought the ring out of Isildur’s hands and taken the decision to throw it into the fires of mount doom
