On "My Car Story" we're in the Suburbs of Minneapolis MN on 6-1-22.
We're looking at a 1960 Plymouth Fury Convertible in Carmel Paint. The car comes with the period correct 383 CI “SonoRamic Commando Power” Dual Quad Cross Ram V8 engine, and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Randy Guyer. Randy’s had this car since 2015. Randy shares he always wanted one because of the fins. This car has the rare option, a 45 RPM RCA Record Changer. After a two year restoration, this car looks showroom new.
Mike Swedal does restoration work on Randy’s cars. If you’d like him to do work on your car, you can reach him at 1-320-292-9504

Watched the 1960 Plymouth video. This car was mine in 1960, only not a convertible. I got mine brand new in January of 1960 on my birthday. I was 16 going to Thomas Downey High School in Modesto, CA. I was a junior and the only kid in high school that had a new car. Mine was all black. It had the swivel seats, the square Sterling wheel and the RCA record player. You talked about the speedometer bars, but I bet you didn't know that when the bars got to 120mph, they cleared and started over! Did it a number of times! With the torsion bolts you could lower the front, which was the style in 1960. The record player didn't skip over bumps or sliding around corners! But it sure did wear out the 45's! Had to disconnect the cables for the swivel seats due to the fact they would pinch the girls fanny who was sitting in the middle on the console lid. You can't imagine how much fun we had in that car. I had a San Francisco trolley car bell mounted under the hood with a pull switch on the dash and could replicate the SF trollies. By the way, George Lucas was a year behind me at Downey High. Small world.

@@richardferrario4414 I learned to drive in my sisters new 1959 Plymouth. The trans buttons were vertical but I seem to recall a "PARK" lever that you manually moved in a slot next to the buttons to put the car transmission in PARK. Did your 1960 have a lever under those trans select buttons? I might be thinking of a newer car I drove, I'm 80 so the memory isn't what it used to be.

That beauty isn't just a car, it's a work of craftsmanship and lots of TLC. Gosh, all that beautiful Chrome too. Cars now are seemingly built more for profit, using the flimsiest looking parts, and costing thousands, and to work on today's vehicles, you practically need two degrees, one in engineering and the other in computer science. Some shops want to do a diagnostic check, one wanted $155 just for my '92 Toyota Camry to check a rough idle( could be sensor or fuel injection) have another guy that doesn't bother with that, he's very honest too. Going to him next week, he is swamped with work this week. US Auto mfg used. To be the envy of the world, thanks for these videos, Lou

I was in grade school when this monstrosity hit the streets. While I'm impressed with the quality of the restoration, this was the point where Virgil Exner clearly lost his mind. The next two years for Plymouth and Dodge were staggeringly bad; it seemed like Exner had been watching The Jetsons and dropping LSD.
@chuckhaugan4970

Yes!!! Exner was fearless until the wrath of the Chrysler accountants came to prominence in 58.... Exner's F-you to Chrysler and the accountants was the 61-64 model's, according to those in the know, who my Dad knew. I mean seriously, under the hood was as much art as the exterior design. Exner was a genius who was treated like a bastard stepchild by Studebaker and then by Chrysler when they believed GM's propaganda which led to Exner's F-you design. Sad day when Exner was shown the door.

Over the years, I've been treated to some really cool cars. My Dad operated a car lot after he sold his restaurants. We had an inventory of 15-20 autos and, always had a few 'special' units...'70 Boss 302, '69 Shelby GT 500 and a host of Corvettes. This Plymouth is a 'stunner,' a rare piece of automotive history--it looks sensational. Lou, of all the You Tubers doing this type of video; you are certainly among the best. DEDICATION is the KEY word here! It's NOT easy restoring rare oldies, bc so many parts are unavailable! We need much patience searching for parts from all areas of the Continent! I think this hobby has improved in the past little while bc there is a DEMAND for classic car parts more now than ever! When I had my 1965 Mustang conv. in the early 80s there were some parts available from re-manufacturers in the USA. The ads were in the back of different magazines back then. Now we have the internet to make it easier to track parts.

If that were an original 1960 Plymouth color, I could see them calling it "caramel bronze." Great video as always Lou! As you probably know, KZfaqr "ColdWarMotors" has been restoring a 1960 Plymouth 2 door hardtop. He has done quite a bit of heavy metal surgery on that baby. I think he replaced both rear quarter panels because of too much Alberta rust. But I think the restoration story on this car upstages even CWM's effort.

Absolutely stunning. Almost brings a tear to my eyes. Even the parts it took to put that car together are rare as hen's teeth. I owned a 1962 Fury hard top with the 318 Polly, back in the 1990's, which the designer Virgil Exner called "plucked chickens", due to their lack of fins. Even when I had my 62, parts were next to impossible to get ahold of because of how few of these mid-century modern Chryslers survived due to rust issues and lack of interest. I think I spent close to $1,000 just to get the brakes sorted out back then. I still believe Wes Craven's movie "Christine" saved many of these once forgotten "forward look" Mopar's.

The 60 Fury is so over the top in detail that it really should have been labeled as a Chrysler, or maybe even as a Sport Imperial. I can't imagine being the assembly line foreman in 1959 having to explain to the workers that for 1960 they were expected to build rolling art. Must have been a revolt though as by '62 the chrome (stainless) and other features were seriously toned down.

I’m a ‘49 model myself so I’m old enough to remember being fascinated by a 1960 Fury two-door in my hometown in the center of California back in its day. As for the restoration work seen here, it’d be impressive if it was a “barn find”, dirty and dented, but resurrecting a thrashed heap from a riverbank borders on miraculous. Extraordinary work!

Magnificent! I wonder how many donor cars, assisted with restoration? The speedo I believe is termed "ribbon" for the red strip that advances. Serious reverse lights keep folks from getting impaled by a giant fin. I recently learned the chrome edging conceals a weld of two difficult body panels, pretty and purposeful. Ahh the days of Plymouth, when they were serious car makers before the mini van jelly bean era.

I took this to a car show recently and a fellow was looking at the pictures of the car in the junk pile and asked "why didn't you start with a better car"? I said, "I never thought of that" until he said it. This was the car we had so this is the one we restored. I was skeptical about whether Rusty Mike could restore it also, but he said "it's not so tough, I've done worse cars before". Mike works alone!

There's nothing much better than a Fury, especially 50's-60's! Thanks tons, Lou for this most amazing, "My car story!" p.s. A local car show in my area, Pardeeville, Wisc (Not to be missed, 200-300 fabulous machines in a picturesque park by a lake, Sept. 3rd, '22) usually we (among the many 'rad rides' lol) see a '60 Fury droppy in red & it's dynamite, as well..a jaw dropper! Wow, what an amazing restoration ! However, I think it’s possible that “NOS parts” went into its rebuild as well. I think that “manhole cover” that you referred to was actually Chrysler’s answer to the “Continental Kit.” Some reviewers even call it a “toilet seat!” I hope you’re not “flushed with anger” over that moniker, Lou?

The "Wheel Chalk" that Randy talked about was probably in many cars in the early 1960s. My grandfather usually had Cadillacs from that era, and when he bought a new boat, they had to put on the emergency brakes and use the "wheel chalk" to block the wheels. Unfortunately, my Uncle, who was 25 then, got caught between the boat and the car, and it killed him. That was in the TC area around 1962. But anytime you can show the late 1950s or early 1960 Plymouth like this one, it's a winner. These cars were speedy!

Lou, This restoration is truly amazing. Hard to believe considering what they started with. Before I had the 66 Charger I had one of these Fury convertibles. Mine left the factory as a 318 column 3 speed. I put a 361 auto in it out of a wrecked police car. Drove it everywhere with 4.56 rear gear, mostly down the dragstrips in Indiana. 😊
