I'm Bad at Healing Piercings

Does anyone else get this feeling? Where its months into healing and there's still bumps or still irritations and you are just SO frustrated? You feel like you can't do anything right and you might as well just give up? Or you get angry when it seems like everything you heal has issues? That's always been my relationship with piercings and honestly it's made things so hard for me sometimes as a client and as a piercer. I get this imposter syndrome that I'm a bad piercer because I can't heal well.
It's taken me years to come to terms with the fact that my body just heals differently and that's ok, and I don't need to beat myself up for it or blame myself. I hope this video helps others who are struggling or feel the same to realize that it's ok to be bad at healing.

As someone who also struggles with self care motivation and loves getting piercings this was really what I needed to hear, I’ve been told so many times that it’s my fault because I’m lazy and to know that I’m not alone, that I’m understood and that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel it feels great. Thanks for being so open about it and shedding light on this topic ❤️✨

Self care can be really really hard. And that’s super normal with anxiety, depression, and many other mental health issues. Ironically, a lot of folks who struggle with mental health find piercings and tattoos are a great way to express themselves and process their mental and emotional states. It then makes perfect sense that those same clients might struggle with piercing aftercare- it’s basically a more stressful form of self care. It’s OK- and nothing to be guilty about!

Within the last 2 yrs my 73 yr old mom got her helix, tragus, and 4 lobe piercings and every. single. one. healed perfectly without a single problem. I got one earlobe piercing 9 months ago and it has a bump and is irritated. I clean it and I don’t sleep on it at all. Thanks for this video 💗

Omg my lobes are almost 9 months old too and won’t heal. Pierced with needle and implant grade titanium. Clean with sterile saline every day. Tried not sleeping on it but oops. Still can’t change jewelry at all. Oh well lol, as long as it doesn’t get infected.

Appreciate this. I wear headphones, toss around when I sleep, forget to clean everything etc, and so I take a full year to properly heal even lobe piercings. Shit sucks but I love it and I take care of my piercings best I can, and they do heal eventually.

I have 30 healed piercings and I still sleep with a travel pillow. I am pretty careful with my piercings. But I have Chronic Lyme disease and GAD, so sometimes a piercing will act up (sore, but no bumps). I love my piercings. I am glad that your attitude about your struggles is so positive.

Ugh I can relate to that lobe situation. I have sensitive skin and hard time to heal. If I want to add new piercing, I have to get a piece in a day only because I need to make sure how the new piercing adjust with my skin condition. To everyone who are struggling with healing piercings: hang in there! Stick to the proper cleaning & good quality jewelry and keep up the patience. You can do that 💕

I have just had my helix done and I'm hoping for a miracle. I always clean religiously but it seems to make no difference :(

this is so relieving to hear! I have gone to piercers to follow up with any irritation and i've felt the judgement from them.... lol! I have titanium and solid gold high quality jewelry, do the proper follow up care, and yet still manage to get major bumps that take ages to heal away, no matter how careful i am. every piercing i've gotten has taken much, much longer to heal than other people i've known, and it always makes me wonder if I'm doing something wrong. I'm trying to become a piercer myself, and one of the top tips i've seen is to have many well healed piercings of your own, because if your shop sees consistent bumps/irritation, they could think you're not too knowledgeable on healing piercings to start with. So thanks for opening up about this!

I've been so embarrassed about my double helix ear piercing struggling to heal and this makes me feel so much better 🥲 it's been 10 months and the lower one is still tender and gets a bump on and off. I'm a vicious side sleeper so I've definitely been sleeping on it, so I felt like I was the one to blame for it not healing. However I have a history of skin allergies and skin irritations so it makes a lot of sense why it would take longer to heal. I've been really wanting an eyebrow piercing but have been avoiding getting it out of shame, but this is super encouraging!

I think what you said at the end was very important; a piercing is a deliberate wound, ofc it´s gonna be difficult to heal. By putting in the jewelry the healing process is interupted. The body wants to close the hole and can´t! So it´s really not that weird to have some complications I think :P (not a piercer or medical professional)

I have a lot of trouble healing piercings for some reason. And I do clean them twice a day, try not to snag them. I am an active sleeper though... But man, I rarely have an easy time healing a piercing. The one exception was my septum, which I ended up taking out for other reasons. Boo. My inverse navel took a solid 4 years to actually feel healed. It never migrated, never got infected, just off and on constantly irritated, crusty, bled occasionally, sore etc. Turns out the problem was that I wore yoga pants to sleep and they were rubbing it at night. Changed that up and, like magic, it was fine within a month It's almost never irritated now at 10 years. I'm glad I was so stubborn with it (it was a post breakup/reclaim my body piercing), because it is hands down one of my favorite parts of my body now. And then I had to retire a rook because it migrated, swelled up and refused to go down for 9 months. And I just deal with it couldn't anymore. I loved it though, and I want to try again, but I'm gun-shy on cartilage piercings now.. Also had to retire a lobe piercing that refused to cooperate. Thank you for putting this out there. I think a lot of us need permission to retire unhealed/problematic piercings sometimes. And it helps to know that a pro can struggle with healing too.

I’m chronically ill and disabled but my body weirdly heals like a dream every time (as does my mom) and i have a bunch of related skin issues, extreme dryness, bleeding, cracking, bruise like a overripe peach, all the fun stuff. But that kinda forces me to take care of my skin really well. I also think my OCD helps as I’m too scared of something going wrong and me getting a flesh eating bacteria or staph or something, and it just gets compulsive for me. I sleep completely still like sleeping beauty or a vampire, and generally just don’t develop bumps. But my scar tissue is very like cigaret scars, so thin and concave. I still have my navel piercing going on 18 years. But I relate hard to the missing spoons because I definitely have days where I’m just way too sick to get cleaned as usual, and that sucks.

This is incredibly reassuring. I have hEDS and healing piercings is an absolute nightmare process. I gave up on my industrial after 2 years of bleeding daily and huge swelling and bumps, I probably would've pushed it a bit longer if the piercer hadn't moved away. I've just finished healing one of my nostril piercings (only took 8 months...), the other side rejected really badly and I had it repierced a couple of months ago and it's just hit it's bumpy stage. It's unpleasant when it's in the middle of your face, but knowing that it should heal like the other side and that other people have similar issues is enough to push through it. I've found a piercer who is as patient with my piercings as I am, which is definitely half the battle. I might try the industrial again when my nose is healed.

I have a connective tissue disorder, and I got a helix piercing in January of 2020 at a popular but (as I figured out after getting 4 of my first piercings there) not particularly high quality shop. It was done with a ring, which I thought was wrong but went along with. Nearly 3 years later and I've found my holy grail piercer, he's pierced me several times and I've always had issues but they heal in the end. My helix is still an issue but we keep an eye on it and it's slowly getting better. Finding the right piercer makes all the difference.

I’ve been getting pierced since I was 16 I first got my nostril pierced & I’m terrible at healing piercings. I’m super clumsy and bump my ears on everythinggggg, I accidentally sleep on them, so I always get irritation bumps. But I’m super patient with my piercings and I don’t give up on them! The only piercings I’ve had that healed successfully were my lobes and my oral piercings (standard tongue, philtrum, dahlia bites, and snake bites). I’m super patient and consistent with healing my piercings especially my ear piercings cause they suuuuuck to heal due to me being clumsy. (I have 10-11 different piercings in each ear).

I definitely feel like my lip hates me. I don't remember my belly button giving me issues for too long and I just got my septum a few weeks ago and it seems to be fine.. but my lip piercing was done 6 months ago and it still gets super swollen. There is a constant bump on the inside of my lip. Shoot, the other day it was bumping up on the outside and it had blood coming out...not fun. Been pretty painful. I rinse my mouth after I eat and use a saline spray to clean it up on the outside. I really want it, but damn it is getting on my nerves.

My tattoos heal within 5SECONDS. In a 4-6 day span. Piercings are the biggest annoyance of fashion. U don't need to extreme baby tats and take few days hence why ill ALWAYS perfer tattoos over piercings no struggles with them where as if u slightly nick hit ur piercing or miss a day oh! Bump central there frustrating. Sad truth is u CAN do things right and ur body just don't want to heal. Genetics can go unfairly against ya. It hurts. My lobes healed like nothing but my stupid nostril piercing is just NOW starting to heal up and it been over a year same with my vertical industrial. I've had longer running time with bumps then without it's annoying AF. It is. And despite being sleeping opposite side of the things, and eating well, and cleaning them. Which I do but it don't matter. Sometimes it's just a body genetics issue not always you. Remember that :)

I weirdly heal anything in cartilage FAST and perfectly. 4-6 months for most. Daith, two helixes, faux rook, conch, and flat. Septum healed up within two months also. But LOBES?! Those hate me. I see a highly accredited, well respected APP shop (they even have their own signature end from Junipurr). I follow aftercare to a T. I have had to retire 3 lobes for issues and have one currently that’s three years old and still not fully healed. Seriously, I thought it was but went to swap the top today and it started bleeding. I am still freshly salty. My initial first lobes took 4 years to heal when I was 7. My body just hates lobes. It’s bizarre. Idk how I can easily heal things that should be hard to heal, but the simplicity of lobes just hate me.

It has taken me so long to figure out that the bras I was wearing seemed to anger the piercing. What are your thoughts on salt water? I took my bridge piercing out 10 months after getting it pierced. It was my dream piercing and I'd been thinking about it for YEARS... I have the perfect anatomy for it, went to the most reputable piercer in all of Montreal and got the highest-quality jewelry possible for it. It was super fucking expensive. It developed irritation bumps after 7 months of being completely fine, and they simply WOULD NOT go away. I got discouraged after three months, and figured I should probably take it out to avoid horrendous scarring. Now I'm not sure if I made the right choice... And I don't know if getting it repierced would be a good idea, because if it couldn't heal properly the first time around through fresh skin, it would probably be worse through scarred skin and leave me with EVEN WORSE scarring if it were to reject again. I'm fucking heartbroken.

If it was fine for 7 months it’s very likely you could have troubleshoot those bumps with a piercer and they could have gotten things better for you! My bridge is over a year and still dealing with bumps on and off but it’s stable and hanging in there. Sometimes these are tricky heals so working one on one with a piercer and being patient are keys! I’d say it’s worth seeing if you can get it repierced and try a second time!

I currently have a lip, rook, and conch that are so much trouble. All done in the last year. My medusa, other rook, and other conch healed perfectly. My piercer wanted me to come back in two weeks to downsize. I went in today, a month and a half later. And honestly I’m wondering if he should have downsized it for me because it’s really sitting deep in the pocket. But it doesn’t help that I keep messing with it… I earned recently that I probably have hyper mobile EDS and I guess that makes you heal poorly? Seems like my healing has gotten much worse in the last year or two. But tattoos, aside from one little spot, I heal just fine! Guess I’ll stick to that 🤷🏻‍♀️

At which point, I’m finally going to change the jewelry. It’s interesting because my lobe piercings and septum healed up just fine. Daith is doing well, as is the forward helix so I dunno 🤷🏾‍♀️

Can you use table salt and water and if you cannot find saline anywhere? In the past when using sea salt on my second lobes, they took forever to heal even with proper care. Constant puss and crustys, but quite excessive

I don’t suggest table salt or seasalt. They can be really over drying. Saline is isotonic making it better for your body. If you can’t access saline clean water works just fine.

I do have a question, how were you able to successfully heal your cheek piercings?

One thing I wonder but idk if you answered it. Why are you a traveling piercer? Why don’t you own your own shop or work in one full time? I‘m sure business wil be booming

Oh, God, I have five your little piercings on one ear and three on the other end all of them talk no fucking joke I’m not even kidding you I’m not shitting you, my earlobe piercings, all of which have taken a year to heal. The reason being is because of my overly sensitive skin. I’m so prone to infection just because they are like I’m so I’m so prone to infection even if I don’t touch them don’t play with them. Don’t nothing if there is a crusty if there is a piece of dirt that goes near it. If there is something that gets on around or near my piercing, my piercing is so unhappy and it just gets mad. And even after they’re healed sometimes like in this case, my third lobes, they’re a year old but I can’t put anything else but my gold hoops in it you know why because they’re so sensitive and anything else goes in them. It pisses them off and it makes them upset and I have to put my gold hoops back so you know it’s just what it is and I accept it and I love them anyways regardless
