It's taken a long time for me to feel comfortable speaking out about this, but after a group of recent botched procedures across the midwest, I feel it's time to speak up. I am in a weird middle ground where I have and appreciate this work personally, but professionally I fear for clients and for another case like B-slice to happen here in America. New self proclaimed self taught "mod artists" are cropping up at studios around the country and hurting people. More then ever there's a need for real education and a frank and honest discussion about these procedures and their risks. Anyone considering this work needs to take it very seriously the choices and risks they are taking with their bodies.

Wouldn't it be so awesome if there were alternative plastic surgeons, like actual trained doctors that can give us the mods we want

I think if this could be regulated correctly this would be the safest and best choice. Actual pain management and infection management for healing. Insurance if something goes wrong. Appropriate monitoring during the procedure. It would be a huge step for safety.

Absolutely. I think it would also ensure that only people who are completely committed are obtaining the procedures due to cost alone. Might help reduce mod regret especially for younger people.

I actually tried to find a plastic surgeon for my tongue split. I found one but she was wayyy more sketchy and seems very ill informed about body modification so I turned to a body mod artist. I’m really happy you brought up how most surgeons see these procedures as mutilation. It’s very disappointing and I hope to see it change

I learned about mods recently and was a bit horrified to learn that there was no medical training involved. Stitches are not easy to do, pain med administration can be really dangerous. This also means that there is NO regulation. Not surprised that its illegal. Very unfortunate though that its not something that can be done by specialized actual surgeons.

as a travelling tattoo artist, and someone who’s recently gotten my tongue split i definitely agree with you on this. i cannot tell you how many people i have seen been botched (unfortunately myself included) as soon as they got up from the table no matter the extensive amount of research they had done. i know i had looked up SO MANY articles, instagram posts, and even word of mouth of so many people and still got the short end of the stick. i feel like there is absolutely nothing to fully prepare someone for a heavy mod like this (as far as personal pain level and healing) but there’s even less information on the risks of it all. as someone in the industry i fully understood what i was getting myself into and the gamble i took, but for people outside of it just wanting to be modified it truly is such a dangerous game.

Thank you for this very grounded video on body modding, I'm interested in getting my tongue split in the future but I'm taking my time to consider if the pain and permanency are worth it, I now have something else I have to consider before deciding to get it done. I really wish more countries would understand people will get this done whether or not it's legal, I'm on the body mod sub and I've seen many posts "where can I go to get x mod? It's illegal in my country" and people telling them good artists in their area or overseas. It also makes a lot of people scared to go to the hospital or doctors when something goes wrong because there's this stigma around it too. It's much like drugs, legalizing and providing safe places to do these things will 200% help reduce harm rather than banning and punishing people who take part in these things.

@Lynn_Loheide
@Lynn_Loheide Жыл бұрын
@@lifehatesjess unfortunately these days research is difficult. Old forums don’t exist or are heavily monitored. Some artists threaten clients who have bad experiences and try to tell their stories. You gotta read LOTS of reviews, look at lots of examples of work. Pay attention to healed and ork as well as fresh photos. Talk to people whose opinion you trust. Really talk to the artist about their practices, education, and background. And trust your gut if something seems off.

This one is so timely; I work at a studio in California and the number of people in their late teens and early twenties seeking out heavy mods has had an uptick, and I was recently talking to a co-worker who was also a weird little teenager who read modblog about the recent number of posts on mod reddits (I do not have tiktok, lol) that appear to be from people who received virtually no aftercare guidelines for their tongue splits and seem very frightened and confused by how intensive recovery is. As always, I super appreciate your focus on harm reduction and informed consent; I've been able to refer clients to a number of your videos if they seem uncomfortable having an in-depth conversation about sensitive or potentially triggering topics at the counter.🖤

as someone who has been working to become a piercer, and hopefully some day be a heavy mod artist as well, thank you *so much*. it's quite sad, seeing people advocate for such risky things without advertising the risks as well. when my mom got her coinslot, the artist let us take pictures of him working under the promise that we would never share them with anyone outside our family, and if anyone asked about it that we would tell them the artist and give no other details whatsoever. it healed great, but his sutures weren't separated, he didn't know to put on sterile gloves, he didn't have a handle for his scalpel, his sutures were uneven and shaky, etc etc. im currently a medical student, and those suture lines made me cringe. and he's the first mod artist i had ever heard of, back in 2015 or so. one of the biggest names too. glad that you're able to talk about it now!! (: it's extremely important that people understand the risks of these procedures, and hopefully anyone who sees this might think again ps: for anyone wanting to get extreme mods, my word of advice is to only let someone work on you if they tell you the risks and try to talk you out of it. bonus points if they give you a period of time to make sure you're informed before they agree to work on you

I didn’t even know they didn’t have professional medical training and licensure until recently. I asked a piercer in Oregon and they told me I can’t go to them and I need to go to a dermatologist or other medical professional instead. I was so confused at their stiff reaction. Then I started to talking to other ppl who are heavily modified and started learning about how it’s illegal in Oregon and some other states as well along with all the dangers of the business. I was so shocked… but I’m glad I found out before I just went and booked with someone. Tbh I only see cis men practitioners and it makes me uncomfortable because I’m so afraid of SA (with my history of being SA’d). I know a dermatologist will stitch up my ears for me but I feel like I will be judged in that type of environment. Idk, the whole thing is messy

@@Lynn_Loheide when I was growing up in Texas I remember it being so common in the tattoo/piercing community to go to a traveling heavy body mod artist. And no one thought anything of it, it was just what it was. I never went personally cause I was too young and was afraid of not being able to get jobs. But I’m so glad I didn’t, I was incredibly naive and would’ve prob ended up being in a really compromising situation. That is what worries me about heavy body mods and even body suspension, I just feel like for ppl who are naive, young, or don’t have any true connection to the community and know the deets on who to trust/ not to trust, it just makes so many ppl vulnerable.

Ive wanted a tongue split for years. Honestly a lot of the body mods I want are considered very extreme and I’ve even seen tattoo artists be very judgmental of them (cough tattooed sclera cough). I live in a state where tongue splits are legal and even considered constitutionally protected free speech, luckily for me, but finding a practitioner is difficult. I want to get a new piercing soon, and my previous piercer had been in the industry a long time and was very up on safety, so I was heavily considering asking him if he would do one or if he knew anyone who did. I’m surprised that many people don’t know that body mod artists aren’t medical practitioners. After all, if they were medically trained they would probably be working in some form of medical practice, not a studio.

I hate how much safer heavy body mods would be only if there wasn't that much stigma against them. Giving body mod artists the proper training and medical tools/equipment to perform the same mods but in a safer setting would be way better not only for the artist themselves but for the client. I see the concerns for the safety of the client brought up a lot by the same people who later don't want body mod artist to get proper training that would help with creating safer conditions.

I told the police about my procedure and they unlawfully arrested me with a DUI when I was sober. I thankfully have never gotten harassed for my piercings, or anything serious, I’ve gotten side ways glances from the older folk but thankfully nothing to bad. I also feel like the area you live heavily reflect how “tolerable” people are to mods.

You talk about "keeping it underground" to circumvent investigation &further persecution, so then how do we go about not putting the artist in a bad spot when seeking this work? Is private messaging ok on say, insta, Reddit, etc, or is that frowned upon bc it can be screenshot? Would you ask verbally at a piercing shop, or is that a bad environment to ask? Is there anything specific to look out for that's like a flag, like pineapples with swingers (bad example but all I could think of lol). I want to find someone safe, but also don't want to put them in a rough spot where they have to either lie and turn down work, or say yes and take a risk of someone finding out.

I don't see why a plastic surgeon will do all kinds of things for "normal" people such as breast enlargment that is dangerous and abnormal looking. That I've heard of ribs being removed...all kinds of things such as fake calf muscles and other things. I don't know why they'll do those things, helping women look like walking barbie/blow up dolls but someone wants elf ears and they think it's insane and won't do it. Someone wants a forked tongue and they won't do it. But someone asks to have their breasts the size of soccer balls and they're willing to do that. It's just as abnormal if you ask me. It's also what the person wants. I think plastic surgeons should be willing to do this sort of work and perhaps there be a way for body modification artists to become licensed and properly trained - to learn from plastic surgeons and such. A way to...become legit.
