Exactly when you start using GPU acceleration the GPU wants prob 4GB minimum. That means theres 4GB for CPU. 4GB means your forced to the use swap file heavily on using it for Pro applications that have GPU acceleration. 8GB has no place in any pc in 2023 even Chrome is a RAM hog these days.

People hate that Apple is so mercenary about its upgrade costs. The only reason the base model starts with 8GB is because Apple know people want at least 16GB, so will probably upgrade. If someone doesn’t upgrade, they feel unhappy about their new machine. If someone does upgrade, they feel unhappy about being screwed for money. Either way, Apple is giving its customers a less enjoyable experience.

@@saricubra2867 you can only compare amount of p and e cores on same manufacturer with same clocks. not only are apples chip and intels not using the same design but they arent even both x86. apples chips are all arm based. you cant simply take the p and e core amount on each chip to use as comparison. when doing cross architecture comparisons you also have to take into account software you might be using that doesnt have native arm versions which would have to run through a translation layer. also doesnt take into account apples neural engine and encoders built in to artificially boost performance that the cpu and gpu would normally struggle with. basically too complicated to give a basic answer on which is objectively better

Another issue with the ram is that most 3rd party vendors only sell Apple’s stock configs and while they used to offer one stock model with upgraded Ram but they no longer do. So if you want to upgrade ram but not CPU you have to buy from Apple directly or from a very small number of 3rd party vendors. So if amazon has a sale you can’t take advantage of the sale if you want more memory. So that 8 gb upgrade often costs you more than $200

@parjau4554
@parjau4554 8 ай бұрын
@@progamer1125 That was the thing with the M1 units though. The SSD, therefore swap was very fast (comparatively, for its time). I was struck by how my M1 Air 8GB had no noticeable slowdown with 8GB swap so really functioned like a 16GB. The idea that using swap diminishes SSD life is not really true for modern SSDs. There were a huge number of videos done on this subject back when the M1s came out and people were paranoid about longevity. They showed that it was not an issue. This has been confirmed by no M1 SSD issue having manifested over the subsequent years.

I have an experience that I rarely see discussed. I had an early 2015 intel MacBook Pro with 8gb for many years and it never EVER slowed down no matter how many hundreds of open chrome tabs, electron apps, etc I threw at it. The only time saw it slow down from ram was when I had several instances of a Haskell interpreter running in the background for hours leaking hundreds of gigabytes of memory. But now I have an M1 MacBook with 8gb and it constantly becomes stuttery during normal use from just using vscode, Spotify, obsidian, a few browser tabs, plus a few smaller apps in the background. Ram pressure in Activity monitor is almost always yellow, and I often get this pop up saying I need to close apps because the ram pressure is too high (but it’s sort of random, not showing up every time it slows down). I never saw that ONCE in my years of using the intel. (Which also had 8gb) I think it needs to be talked about more how much of a downgrade the ram management was on M1 macs vs intel. In my experience it was night and day. And now with m3 it seems even worse according to this video.

I've had year model 2007, 2011, 2013 and 2015 15" Macbook Pros that have had their HDD/SSD upgraded or replaced after failure. The first two also got a RAM upgrade. This is like making a car where its not only impossible to replace the tires and the brakes, but also having crap tires by standard and charging you like crazy to get something decent. If you are spending that much budget, you have to get the latest Windows Gaming Laptop instead. People who are getting premium Macbooks possibly use Apple only apps. If you are using a Windows version with the latest RTX and Intel CPU, it should be as good or way better than the Apple M3 Max especially for gaming. I got the 14-core 18GB M3 Pro for mobile use primarily. If I'm looking for a powerhouse PC I either use the Alienware 17 R5 or the 7950X3D with RTX 4090 desktop.

ARM chips need the memory bandwidth, that's why they are soldered. If memory is upgradable like on x86, it would tank perfomance. If you get Intel or AMD chips, since the CPUs have a lot of cache memory, slower RAM doesn't hurt as much (SODIMM or DIMM standard) and it's cheaper (but the CPUs themselves aren't as efficient and run hotter).😮

For the MacBook, Apple knows that its wealth of ports allows users to circumvent limitations on SSD storage. So, they've limited RAM instead, nudging customers towards higher-tier models. With the iPhone 15 Pro, it's a different story. The device’s prime feature is its portability. Although it comes with a Type-C port, lugging around an external SSD would conflict with the convenience iPhones are known for. So, by limiting the internal SSD storage, Apple is subtly encouraging customers to upgrade to higher-capacity models. Interestingly, both the base iPhone 15 Pro and the M3 MacBook sport 8GB of RAM. But while this might be ample for a smartphone, it leaves much to be desired for a production tool like a MacBook. These decisions seem to suggest that Apple's marketing and sales teams might have a stronger say than their R&D team, leading to such unconventional product choices. It's a fascinating look into the inner workings of one of the world's leading tech giants.

I also think, that they have removed one port, so you can't swap the motherboard with more RAM in the future. Even if it's not the main reason, it's 100% one of the resons.

This is why i traded in my 15" M2 air with 8gb/512gb for an 'older' 14" MBP with the 10-core 16gb/1tb M1Pro Refurbished for the same price. Apple accidentally made a product that was 'too good' with the M1, and decided to nerf it by limiting the RAM on base models. In the M3 they went a step ahead and nerfed the Memory Bandwidth from the M1pro and M2pro to down from 200gb/s to 150gb/s because again, they need to get people in the door with a base model and have an upgrade path available for folks who'll find that 8gb RAM will be tiresome in 3-4 years time. They could have easily stayed with the M1 for years, thanks to how extraordinary this chip was and still is, and focused on other hardware, like better screens, keyboards, connectivity, ports, materials, and features like Face ID, but i guess the race for chips is heating up with Qualcomm and even Intel getting close. this nerfed 'upgrade' won't be well received. They could have gone for a 12/18/36 gb model but they have only the 18/36 models

Wow, when I saw the Keynote, I thought Dynamic Caching would help improve memory distribution across the system, and even with 8GB of RAM they would work better. But from what I noticed, it is disturbing even more, limiting the system when it reaches maximum memory, maybe they wanted a smaller memory swap with the SSD?... I'm not sure, but what we can conclude from all this is that if If you want maximum performance from one of the M3 family chips, getting more memory could be the way to go.

This has been a progressive example of Apple jumping over dollars to get pennies from people pretty much ever since Cook became CEO. Everyone can say Apple would've never done this or that under Steve Jobs but one thing is for sure, they never would've become so obsessed with penny pinching like they have become under Cook. They should bump the minimum ram up to at least 12gb for all their computers. I feel like even that extra 4gb would make a big difference. I'm sure they could do this without raising the price too, as the extra 4gb at the scale they're buying would be such a low cost for them. But they would much rather have people pay extra and upgrade their ram than offer a better base version with a few extra gigs of memory.
