I worked with an English bricklayer plasterer. I was told they use a float with nails in the form a key for the plaster. I also picked up some feathering straight edges which is great for screeding wet work, or even screeding back patches straight away. Our climate is more warm and use clay bricks more than concrete blocks. I got pieces of steel sheeting as straight edges on the shorter lengths which work very well. Great video.. The blocks look like medium density blocks, becoming popular. Built with them. Fine too for drying out cracks no issues. Made with beeds ok. Same mix a chimmey silva pearl for filling chimmeys.

This was built some time ago the walls used to have beauty board on them LOL do you reckon the guy wh built it back then bought the blocks or made them but yes I think they would been nice to work with and they plastered no problems

Your Attention to Detail is Brilliant, I do inside's Work, Love Watching outside rendering videos but the rendering videos online are to fragmented (the few rendering vid's that are out there are hit and miss) The few you have on your channel are Spot on, it would be great if you could Organise each facet of Plastering, Rendering from start to finish, scud, bead, scratch Coat, float coat, float, nap/sponge finish, as you make more vid's for your channel, add under boarding, skimming, rendering etc, it would be a Great Help to your Community, p.s. love plastering tool section, love to see More of the tools Used in your vid's, Happy Christmas to you and your Family, may Next year be more Fruitful

Really informative video detailing all the essential and some subtle aspects of applying render to walls to produce a flat true surface for subsequent finishes. Great attention to detail. Would like to see future videos outlining setting up rules especially when forming equal margins /reveals around window frames.Possible content could also include aligning non - attached piers (using string lines and plumb & dot). Thank you for all these tips Mac. I was wondering if you get the occasional accident such as, spill bucket of render, plaster or water on the floor. Just as well you keep the floor clean. I must remember to use a float. I hate it if I get plaster to prominent and not notice until it has dried hard. I tried sanding it down with sander once but it got too dusty. I expect you will get a good finishing plaster rather than just multi grade so you get a better finish. I buy multi purpose because I'm only doing DIY for myself. I used the back of a tile to make an embossed impression for final coat to adhere to it, rather than scratch the surface. It saves bits going on the floor. But it is quicker to scratch it.

The back of a tile sounds a good trick man, oh yes have for sure dropped buckets over the years and spilled water it can be a nightmare but with time i find I be much much more carful , cover up is a must always :)

Great video! Super informative plus you chose the perfect wall. All the light from the doors is shining straight onto the wall your working on! Having said that if the sun is to strong you end up with other problems. I'm guessing this is overcast early morning?

@@macplastering hi mac i have a fairly handy size chimney to do in the morning.finish coat.it was scratched yesterday but over the weather i say its be soaking wet in the morning.il will be carefull with the wetting and make the mix fairly strong.a small bit of water proofer and hope for the best.hope it goes off quick enough

You are doing your job perfectly, I really want to know what makes a difference using fiberglass mesh embedded in the base coat, Is it the surface's not being suffiecent to make a mechanical bond or the mortar's quality(ratio of sand,cement water), or exterior wall rendering coat being exposed to temp changes.I couldn't get any satisfying answer till now

Thanks for watching and the nice comment. But yes embedding mesh of any kind is stronger than if it was just applied to surface. For skimming it's OK as it's only 3mm thick have a good few mixing videos up and more videos like this ... thanks again for watching

Appreciate the nice words brother most plasterers I know are very good and good guys all self employed hard workers so I guess they all need to be good to get work to pay the bills. Do you do tiling day in day out mate ? I do some tiling but tend to only do my own of for family as would be to slow to make £$£

Standard lightweight concrete block, laid thousands of them and rendered on top of more, 20+ year ago all internal walls were blocked up with them.

im not a plasterer but I've done a few small areas 3m square this week. i got better at it each day. yesterday however i made the mud too wet and in 1 area it kept sliding off so i removed it all and started over. i also think by starting at the bottom wasn't a good idea

I like starting at top left and work left to right others prefer the other way but most plasterers i know in person do it the way i do... yes its all in the mix if you get that right and preparation things go a lot better, and as you know when plastering starts to go wrong its really hard work then... thanks again for watching and keep at it my friend always here to help

Very nice, I keep getting suggestions from plasters to dot and dab, they all suggest it’s better but what they mean is it’s quicker and easier for them. It’s really frustrating - just tell me you don’t want to float and set but don’t pretend it’s not as good

Hi mate i think refina are brilliant trowels as good if nit better than mt in my experience with both refina sell both pool trowel a d square both are good but i mostly use square pool trowels are good for some things such as funny angles and pool shaped walls ceilings floors but Also for trying yo get less lines tgey are good

This is the 1st coat / undercoat mate there is a top coat to go on the next day or so we call a skim coat

I brought the bellie mixer for this wee one mate just sometimes works out good I can lump the mix in let it do its thing while i prepare some inside walls :)

So we can just sand and cement internal walls? Im thinking of doing my loft walls as practice before I give my external walls a shot. I've read mixed reviews on just using sand and cement.... Thought?

If you have block walls this is in my opinion the best way to do them I will be building my own house and will be doing this on the block walls I have and do this the same in my own home and families homes its a very good way to do block walls again there is other options but for these walls this is best way cheapest strongest nicest to skim over again if just small maybe hard wall and skim same day but all jobs are that little different, outside walls are a slightly different mix as you will ned to scratch and then top coat 2 different mixes and again slightly different than inside mix , we have loads of outside rendering videos and loads more to come :) Thanks again for watching and commenting mate hope these help

Hi Mac. Can I use builder's sand for the base coat or must it be plasterer's sand? I have a wall that was remodeled to swap the door and windows around so I have to fill in 1 inch recesses ready for top coat render. Your advice would be hugely appreciated as I'm battling to find this info. I have so much building sand left over and I'd like to use it, if possible 🍀

I would strongly recommend plastering sand hanna it is stronger and better to work with its gritter than building witch gives it strength building sand shrinks to much and can slide loads when coating and getting straight

Hi Colin mate I probs didn't need to as it wasn't drying in very fast and was well dusted down, But i did give it a splash to be safe as put most of it on in one go

Watched a few of these plastering vids and have noticed not one plasterer left a bridging gap between wall and floor to prevent any damp going up the wall from floor level .Just curious to know why this is not shown or explained the importance of a bridging gap .

Wwwould do that on a damp job one that has been chipped off and pumped but this job is very dry and inside walls mostly so doubt any damp will rise here

When I was to renovate the kitchen this area nearly came off in one piece , it sounded hollow when I tapped it . . I was taught fat and ugly but i've leant towards coating as you do, after watching my hard work slide off of the odd thirsty block. That's not so bad, but when the homeowner is passing and asks you if its meant to happen.. my face got a little hot.

Haha man things like that happen at the wrong time every time i do like to try build up especially door frames dead walls not to bad but anything heavy i preffer a nice build up
