As an electrician that does strictly remodels this is an absolute essential tool. kzfaq.infoUgkx0vyBwjtx9GGOuiqUVT2sRoYqmDoNT_RI Being able to precision cut any material with a light weight tool is priceless.I upgraded to this Dewalt 20v from a competitor's 12v. The Dewalt 20v is just as light as the competitor's 12v. I am extremely pleased with the overall performance and battery life of this tool. As far as oscillators go, they just aren't very ergonomic tools. The dewalt oscillators have an offset handle that do make them somewhat more ergonomic than the competitors' oscillators.

As someone who uses these tools in the daily, the Makita is rock solid and has unbeatable reliability. It takes almost all blade types including starlock, and it's ergonomics are just about right. I own the Dewalt, and while it's got a convenient blade change, the thing is an ergonomics disaster, designed by people who don't know anything about how multitools get used. I use and abuse the Dewalt, because I'm in that battery system, but I hate that multitool, and really like the Makita. The Dewalt gets the job done but the Makita is a true workhorse, designed to thrive on abuse, and designed with the real tradie in mind, no frills, no fancy styling or ergonomics, no features that seem like a good idea to people who work in offices, just a no BS tool that you can depend on to put food on the table. I'd never consider these German brands, and the only other multitool I would look at is the M12 Milwaukee, which is nice because it has all the features of the Makita in a very small package, and is faster than the 18v Dewalt. Great for 80% of the jobs I do in insurance and renovation, where it gets taken out for a quick job here and there, but not the best for cutting out a bathroom floor, where we tend to use a chainsaw or budget corded multitool anyway.

I have this Makita and 3 more multi-tools ( 2 Feins - 1 corded and the 18V SuperCut) and the Dewalt 18V. The Makita is definitely the most refined in terms of noise and vibration, in a way it almost does not feel and sound like a multi-tool and lacks the associated rumble and jumble of a multi tool. But it is MUCH bigger and heavier than all the multitools i have seen. And it is brushed. Build quality wise - It feels like a tank in your hands.

The main reason I prefer the Makita is when making angled cuts the knuckle joint on the Dewalt (for the quick release lever) gets in the way, limiting cut depth( for example when splicing fresh timber into a window sill). The Dewalts speed is set by trigger pressure/ pull, which ends up being another thing to think about and leads to fatigue, the Makita is a simpler on/ off switch with a separate speed setting, but less ergonomic grip body.

Thanks for these videos roger your tool comparison videos are always very thorough! I have the dewalt as that's my largest battery platform and I especially like the flexvolt,I wonder if you have any experience with the flexvolt cut off / still type saw? I'm looking at getting one but could do with an idea of how long a battery will last/run so that I know if it's worth getting one for the odd re-roof that we do and other general cutting. Funnily enough I watched a video earlier today where the bloke had concluded that the Milwaukee was better than the dewalt multi tool as it's easier to use,his conclusion had nothing to do with the performance of either tool. Thanks roger!
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 3 жыл бұрын
I had one of those Flexvolt cut off saws and it got stolen. It is O.K but the battery doesn't last long if you are cutting slabs. It relies on a thin diamond blade to take out less material. I would go for a mains electric 12" saw. The only other option is to get the battery pack to mains converter which gives you the best of both worlds but it is expensive.

I have a mains operated multi tool with the same sort of sliding switch (I forget the name) and I'm on my second one because the switch could not take the ingress off dust and packed up before the 12 month warrenty. It was replaced and 2 years down the line the switch started getting brittle inside and sounded a bit gritty and jammed on. I prefer a lever/trigger type power button rather that sliding switch, won't buy another power tool with a sliding switch ever again.

I didn’t think that the review was very balanced when compared with the other reviews so far. I do think that Roger doesn’t like this tool tbh...and his underwhelming remark in a previous comment speaks of his dislike of this tool. I agree with others regarding the lack of discussion about the tool. There was no lengthy mention about the blades it can take; nothing about its robust tank-like heavy duty quality; the fact that it can stand on its own two feet as such; or that it can actually get quite low down to ground level without the battery causing any obstruction. I do think this is a flawed review to an extent as it doesn’t feature its plus points...the review was kind of like...yeah its a multi tool but meh whatever.
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Fox I am afraid I didn't really make it very clear about the purpose of these individual tests. We are really trying to introduce the tools one by one and give them a quick run through and talk about the features. We are trying to gather impressions of the tools from people who own and use them and spark some debate. This will form a key part of the head to head so we will certainly be reflecting your thoughts on this tool. I was clearly underwhelmed by this tool it needs modernisng. I have tried nine multi tools and you will see which I thought were best in the roundup but I must emphasise that it is just my opinion. The comments are key because they give us feedback on long term use and the all important realiabilty.
@foxmulder3800
@foxmulder3800 3 жыл бұрын
Skill Builder Thank you for taking the time to reply Roger - wasn’t expecting that! I own this tool as, like you say, i already have many makita 18v tools, so it was the logical next step battery wise. As it’s the only multi tool i’ve owned, my thoughts are based on that product alone, but i have used a dewalt multi at work, which wasn’t bad. I think you get used to what you’re used to. Speaking of which, you mention that the dewalt has 3 selectable speeds...the makita has 6, and these are in the same design as the Bosch tool. I don’t care much for the lack of light on the tool tbh...in my opinion such features are of little use other than for drills when trying to marry up the drill bit with a screw head perhaps. Certainly on a multi tool where, if the blade is orientated 90 degrees, the torch light mounted at the front becomes kind of useless as it’s not facing the cutting direction. As a plumber, i invested in a small head torch to make such jobs easier all around, but i do get that people like such features on their power tools. I would, admittedly, like the handle to be a little less chunky as it can be cumbersome to hold...it does require a mighty firm grip, but then at the same time, it does have that heavy duty feel to it and it has served me well without complaint. I actually, on balance, wouldn’t change anything about it. Yeah its chunky, but it feels heavy like its up to the task of chopping down trees if you wanted! It has no light...so what, its not a deal breaker and certainly not a feature i would look for to sway me buying this or another product. Whilst you’re right insofar as it needs modernising maybe, i don’t think this should be at the expense of its current plus points. And also, people are clearly happy with it to the point where perhaps makita aren’t thinking that they need to change it maybe? That age old saying if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, seems to spring to mind! I do love your videos though Roger...the complete bathroom makeover which is 2 plus hours is still my favourite video...it was that video that got me hooked on Abacus elements board!
@ealingbadger
@ealingbadger 3 жыл бұрын
@@foxmulder3800 Agreed. I own a pair of DTM51s and I also see little or no value in having a light on them. If the job you are working on gets to the point where some extra light would be useful then I don't see a tool mounted LED helping out much. By that point you need either a head torch or something meatier such as a designed for the job work light.
@juyhfrty
@juyhfrty 3 жыл бұрын
Bit of a flawed review really. It takes new type fein / Bosch starlock blades like the others so why wouldn’t you demo it using those instead of the old style makita blades to give a fair comparison? The beauty of this machine is it will take virtually ANY blade and that is important on site or refurb work because you can use a cheap blade if likely to hit brick etc behind say a skirting or a quality Fein starlock blade on new stuff. Is anyone really interested if one machine cuts in 30 seconds and another in 28? I would say most trades use Makita over other brands for general hand helds as they are competitively priced, good quality at the price, batteries are reasonable and a huge range of machines on 18v to choose from. I have a corded Fein 350 starlock for longer jobs and one of these makitas in the van. Simple, straightforward machine that will accept any blade I have to hand. currently £103 on ebay with the given code at checkout. If you want top performance, get the battery fein. If you want an everyday affordable machine of decent quality at the right price with quick change and accepts any blade, this makita takes some beating.
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 3 жыл бұрын
