After cutting rabbets (on the table saw) in the side pieces to accommodate the back, Steve begins the task of "mock" assembling the larger of the two bookcase units in order to get dimensions for fabricating the back. It only takes three tries to find a place and a way to get these giant bookcases dry-assembled in his small shop! Fabricating the two-piece back, cutting dados in those pieces, and more are covered in this video.

I'll admit you had me worried for a few minutes there...as you fed the first side piece into your tablesaw's dado blade, I swore there was something caught under the plywood as there was clearly a gap between the saw's cast iron top and the inside face of the plywood. It wasn't until a few minutes later that I realized the "optical illusion" was caused by the dado you'd already cut along the side's top edge to accept one of the shelves. Keep up the great videos.

When I first looked at the clips before editing the thing together, I thought, "What the heck?" until I realized the same thing. However, I did let one end of the board "lift" up a little when cutting the rabbets, and had to shave it down a little deeper with a chisel... I admitted to that mistake in the video :)
