I TOTALLY agree with you re: the bezel performance - I play with mine ALL the time, from mundane stuff like timing pizzas in the oven, tracking a car parking meter, cooking pasta, to measuring elapsed down-time in the sea. It’s just THE best in the world: sorry Blancpain, you came close, but no cigar.... I personally think that Glidelock is best used double-handed. I’ve adjusted mine singled handed, but it felt cumbersome TBH..... .....and I’d also like to think that ALL dive watch owners wash their watches EVERY day. Grand Seiko should release a 40 mm diver with a high end bracelet and a better, high end clasp.

Personally, I'd go for the Grand Seiko, just because I don't care for the Maxi-Case on the Rolex. Now if there were a pre-ceramic, no-date Sub in the picture, That would be a totally different story. I'd take one of those, throw one of those new bracelets on it, and have the best of both worlds...and still have change left over.

I've had mine back out but I always seem to catch it before it comes out.

The extension on the GS is the same as some 300 dollars divers or 1.500 dollars Sat 300 diverwatch, so the tectic is not expensive but very effective.

The match between case and bracellet in Seiko is better than than Rolex. The maxi case and bracellet needs redesigning as they did with James Cameron, GMTII, Datejust and others...

What would you choose between grand seiko diver £3500 new. Submariner 1991 nipple dial £5100 and jaeger lecoultre master compressor limited same price as rolex new

Bang on with the review. I experienced the same thing with the bezel on the GS. Thought it felt like a Seiko Turtle bezel at first but then I took it into the water a number of times and somehow the bezel action started to “crisp up” (in a good way). I thought it was all in my head but apparently not.

I dislike the placement of the power reserve indicator on the Seiko. It looks like it randomly landed on the dial.

I am slightly under forty, and love the cyclops. The look of it is fine, but the function of it is great!

Very fair and honest review. Both watches have strengths and small weaknesses. For me, I like the GS better for a few reasons. Case design a finish - anti reflective coating which allows you to see the beautiful dial so much better - sprig drive and accuracy. Oh, and price.

I have had the screw behind the clasp on my sub slide partially out and i couldn't get the watch off. I was 800km from civilization out in the Australian desert and had to use some pointy tweezers to tighten it up to get the watch off. 😥

Now I have a CW Trident that uses the solid pins through bracelet links, and it has held up very good!! if my next watch has the screw type pins do I need to worry of it coming apart over time?? that is something I don't wanna worry about, can't believe that would be a concern with a pricey Rolex brand...

Marc can they create a solar spring drive?

I had the same issue. One of the screws got lose and I was very close to loosing my watch. Yeah definitely pins are safer but they are such a pain when sizing your bracelet. Great video Sir. Waiting to have your opinion about Tudor GMT (the black sheep of the Rolex family lol).

I appreciate this post is old Marc . However this did not detract from me watching and listening to you thoughts. I recently sold my 7yr old 114060 . This was to purchase a SBGH289, And to free up cash for house repairs . I don’t consider this a problem , the sun needed a service had a scratched sapphire and a chip on one of the lugs . Thanks

The fact that the Rolex will cost you at least double the price, that’s a win for GS. Getting 20% off a GS is very simple. You can also get a GS tax free, by ordering out of state. Good luck getting a NEW Rolex Sub for under 9k otd.

I like to be able to see the time when I'm outside and the Rolex is definitely less legible due to its lack of AR coating. It is readily apparent multiple times in this video but here's one instance. 3:50

Great review of two exquisite divers buddy! I’d go Rolex as well. Don’t get me wrong guys, the GS is a mighty good watch but for the price I think they could have done better. Especially the clasp. As Marc pointed out, it’s just too tinny and big. But up against an icon like a Submariner, it did a great 👍🏻 job. That’s just my opinion too. I love the GS as well but the SUB takes the cake! Marc, I would think the GS with the spring drive is far more accurate. Not saying it's a better-made watch just the technology is better and I love the spring drive. I hope to afford one someday. The lower priced ones have no micro adjustments and just like you Marc, my wrist changes size with the heat and humidity so I need to be able to add or subtract the size. I need micro adjustments. The diver is too big for me, I have a small wrist and I know GS does have 38mm diameter watches. I have a submariner I got a long time ago, well not that long ago since it has the Glide Lock which I love. I agree the bracelet is better on the Rolex and pin and collar is a pain to deal with. I guess I could just pay someone to take out links. Also on my Sub a couple of screws I have had to tighten near the clasp. Think they got loose from adjusting the glide lock often.

Congratulations Marc on making such a comparison video for first time with so many different point and indeed this is a long video. You have almost left nothing and you know you are getting far better than the half a dozen famous KZfaqrs out there. Your comparison I should say one of the best among all. Trust me I watch these watch videos quite regularly for last 5 years. I don't know why I should not calculate the re-sale price while I am investing so much of Money in Submariner. Build and finish, case shape, screwed bracelets, date magnification, movement, clasp, accuracy, lume you covered almost everything. Except for you missed the power reserve and glasses with AR/ Non AR quoting. By the way can I buy a Submariner with Date, Ceramic Bezel, Maxi Case at $8,500? Again congratulations to my friend and if I were you I would have bought the Rolex instead of a GS.

I'd say the seiko sla 62 mas models are the best looking diver watch that seiko make, including grand seiko. The latest sla043 is half the price of a submariner, but nicer in its design. It doesn't come on a bracelet, but if you prefer straps, then it's a great choice. The movement on the sub is more accurate, but based purely on looks , the sla versions are hard to beat.

I prefer GS... but not with most of their divers. They just look too Rolexy. I prefer their models which are more unique.

So far no pizzas have been harmed .

The Grand Seiko is produced to a greater detail, better quality inside, Hand made finished. Rolex is mass produced and an inferior diver tool, but the clasp is more pleasing to me

GS needs to redesign their clasps on their sports model. You say quirky, I say fugly. You got a thick clasp with stamped metal parts and when you adjust you can see the ratcheting system contrasting with the thick clasp. That does not spell “luxury” in any language.

You talk about screws mark but I've had to swatches where the pins have continuesusly fallen out... so. Only bec you have one negative experience with screws you praise the pins? wtf.

Define polished by ‘machine’. The zaratsu seems to be held in the hand against a tin polishing wheel and you state this is hand polishing, rolex are held in the hand and polished against some sort of fabric buffing wheel and yet you say they are ‘machine’ polished. Seems to me the method of human work is the same, just different abrasive wheel materials used. Am I wrong?

Now you are paying between 12-15K for a submariner and you can get a grand seiko for less than 4 you can get this in titanium same model for 5 the spring drive is way more accurate and the watch is just as robust as the Rolex if not more in titanium can’t go wrong with either watch but at retail obviously the Rolex is the better buy but to keep you’re getting a lot more for your money buying a grand seiko on the secondary market because let’s face it not many people can walk into a Rolex retail location and buy this watch they are just gonna scree your around while the other is much more readily available it’s a shame things have gotten that way at all the big brands because people want to sell them for ridiculous markups that’s just the way it is though

I know a guy who dropped his AP when a screw was loose. He dropped the watch on the sidewalk. Therefore many watchmakers put some sort of blue glue on top of the screws.

Without a doubt Rolex make better Divers and Chronographs but for everything else Grand Seiko blows Rolex out of the water for quality and craftsmanship, including their GMT range.

Both great watches. I currently own neither, but I would buy the Submariner over the GS. Size, looks, and mechanical movement. I also like blue lume more.

Let me start by saying I am not a big GS fan but I am a big Seiko fan! Also I would never buy a Spring Drive movement watch, if I would get a GS it would be High Beat, SD isn't in my view a true mechanical watch. I think many will agree with me and some will not, in my view GS main problem is its name, spending a huge sum on a watch that has Seiko in it is not gonna happened. Toyota with Lexus, Honda with Acura and Nissan with Infinity understood they need to make a strong distinction between the 2 companies. Everybody know Lexus is a supped up Toyota but the branding worked and Lexus is compared with BMW, AUDI and Mercedes. Is GS comparable to Rolex in quality ? yes but for many this doesn't matter because it has a Seiko written on the watch. I think Seiko should have found a different name for their high end watch company. I would much rather get a Seiko Marine Master over a GS diver. Just my personal opinion

Rolex has always been over rated and priced. They use the name. And marketing tricks like de beers diamonds and Nike shoes. They make very nice watches but so do 20 other brands and the others are cheaper.

Never put the name seiko next to the king. Seiko suks whether it’s the gs or regulars. I love my rolexes. I bought 2 seiko divers for daily beaters. They either stop working after 2 days or they are one hour behind all the time. They were both brand new. You get what you pay for
